SCHOLARSHIPS FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

Pending appropriation of State funds by the New York State Legislature, 8,000 scholarships will be awarded. There will be 2,000 scholarships with a value of $1,500 each and 6,000 scholarships with a value of $500 each. The amount of the award shall not exceed the recipient’s cost of attendance (as determined by the institution). Awards are renewable for up to four academic years of undergraduate study or five academic years, if the program of study normally requires five years as defined by the Commissioner of Education. In the event that a scholarship awarded is declined by the student or for any reason revoked by the Commissioner of Education, its benefits shall lapse and no re-awards will be made. In order to be eligible for the awards, students must graduate from high school on time, enroll full-time in a New York State post-secondary institution in the Fall of their graduation year and must also be legal residents of New York State. The State Education Department has allocated one $1,500 scholarship and one $500 scholarship to Chateaugay Central School based upon the size of the graduating class. The selection criteria for the nominees will be the weighted average of the scores on the Regents examinations and/or approved substitute assessments taken prior to the senior year, in the subjects listed below. The weighing of the scores shall be: Comprehensive English x3 Course III Mathematics x3 Global Studies 1 US History/Government 1 Earth Science 1 Biology 1 Chemistry 1

AGRI-MARK ERIC LAWRENCE SCHOLARSHIP

Script: Agri-Mark, Inc. which purchased the McCadam Cheese Company, has continued the scholarship tradition begun in 1998. Eric Lawrence served McCadam as a manager and cheesemaker in the Chateaugay manufacturing plant from 1989-1997. He is remembered and honored by his co-workers for his professionalism, integrity, and courage. In his memory, Agri-Mark offers this scholarship to support graduates of Chateaugay Central School. Eligibility: Graduating senior Attending a 2 year or 4 year college Preference given to students enrolling in Agri-Business curriculum Application: None required. ALICE HYDE HOSPITAL AUXILIARY ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP

Each year the Alice Hyde Hospital Auxiliary offers three scholarships of $500 to area students. Applications are available at school guidance offices and the Alice Hyde Snack Bar. The scholarships will be awarded to anyone who is preparing for any level of study in the medical field such as: L.P.N., R.N., Medical Technology, Pharmacy, Dentistry, X-Ray Technology, Optometry, etc. The application must be accompanied by a personal letter stating why the applicant might benefit from a financial scholarship and should include community activities, personal interests and reasons for entering the medical field chosen.

MALONE COLLEGE CLUB’S SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Each year the Malone College Club offers three $700 scholarships to high school seniors in the schools in the area. The College Club Scholarship Committee will be happy to consider the application of any student who is preparing to enter a four-year degree-granting college. Scholarship winners will be notified by the end of May and presentations will be made at the June meeting of the College Club. The money will be given in two parts – one at the beginning of each semester of the first year. Applications are available in area guidance offices.

FRANKLIN ACADEMY TRUSTEE SCHOLARSHIP The terms of the will of the late Miss Stark provide for scholarship awards to residents of Burke who will be attending college. Funds are administered by a board of trustees in Malone. Students who wish to be considered for this award should contact Mr. Gugliotta by April 1. Application required. The award(s) vary in amount from year to year. (Seniors at FA are also eligible).

CHATEAUGAY CENTRAL SCHOOL ALUMNI FUND SCHOLARSHIP

Script: Several members of the Class of 1960 began a scholarship fund to reward deserving graduates. They have encouraged all alumni to help make this fund grow. It was the wish of the committee that the awards be given to students who had worked to the best of their ability. This year’s recipients will receive $500. AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY

Script: The John E. Harrica Legion Auxiliary #875 of Chateaugay awards scholarships annually in the amount of $400 to two graduating seniors. The awards are intended to help students with their college expenses. Applications will be judged on the basis of character, Americanism, leadership, scholarship and financial need. Priority is given to students whose parent is a member of the Chateaugay American Legion auxiliary. Eligibility: Graduating senior planning to attend college Child or step-child of Auxiliary or Legion member (Post #875) Application: Send letter by May 1 to scholarship chairperson Include: high school transcript and wallet size picture Selection: American Legion Auxiliary Scholarship Committee How the recipient is notified: by the American Legion Auxiliary – certificates are presented at graduation How the award is disbursed: checks are presented by the auxiliary in two installments at the beginning of each semester

Script: The Athletic Association uses money earned from fund- raising projects during the year to honor members of the organization who have been good school citizens as well as participating in the interscholastic athletic program. THE WILLIAM G. & KATHRYN W. BARNES SCHOLARSHIP

Script: The late Kathryn W. Barnes of Chateaugay provided in her will that a substantial portion of her estate be entrusted to Chateaugay Central School to establish the William G. and Kathryn W. Barnes Scholarship. Mrs. Barnes directed that the interest earnings from the trust fund be awarded annually to a graduate of the Chateaugay Central School, who resides in the district, who is of high moral character, who regularly attends a Protestant church, and who has the highest scholastic standing. Eligibility: One award Graduating senior of Chateaugay Central School Resides within the present boundaries of the Chateaugay Central School district Is of high moral character and attends church regularly as certified in writing by the Protestant minister Highest rank in class Application: None required, but Mrs. André will require a letter from the student’s pastor certifying moral character and regular church attendance Selection: Automatic if a student satisfies the eligibility criteria How the recipient is notified: Announced at graduation (Letter from school) How the award is disbursed: Check issued by the school

Script: The Business Club of Chateaugay Central School uses money earned from fund-raising projects during the year – in particular profits from the school store – to honor deserving business students. They must be continuing their education in a business-related field. CRARY EDUCATION FUND Script: Bruce Crary, a wealthy philanthropist who resided in Wesport, N.Y., established a scholarship foundation at the time of his death to assist needy and deserving students who reside in the five Adirondack counties of Clinton, Franklin, Essex, Hamilton, and Warren. A local scholarship committee in each school district selects the recipients and forwards their recommendations to the Crary Foundation. Eligibility: Graduating senior Demonstrated financial need Planning to further their education Application: Available in Guidance Office Completed application must be returned to Guidance Office by May 5. Selection: Scholarship Committee

THE WILLIAM DECHAMBEAU MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Script: This memorial scholarship fund was established in the will of the late William DeChambeau of Burke to reward the qualities of Christian character, scholarship, and leadership among our youth and to assist in furthering their education. Eligibility: Graduating senior planning to further their education Active member of Protestant church in Brainardsville, Burke, Chateaugay or Earlville Application: 1) A statement from the pastor of the area Protestant church where the applicant regularly attends 2) A letter from the school principal endorsing the applicant 3) A statement from the applicant as to their Christian motives, their plans for a career, and a description of their financial need by May 15 of graduation year Selection: Session of the Burke Center Presbyterian Church How the recipient is notified: Announced at graduation (Letter from school) How the award is disbursed: Check is issued by the church after the student completes a semester

LUCA DOWNER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Script: This scholarship in the amount of $500 is given in loving memory of Luca by her family using criteria established by them. Eligibility: It will be the responsibility of the CSE Chairperson to identify the members of the senior class who are, or have been, CSE classified and who will earn a regular high school diploma. The CSE Chairperson shall have the option to include the names of students not actually classified but meeting the intent of the award. If the candidate is a CSE classified student, the only other requirement is to be attending a 2-4 year college. If the candidate is not CSE classified, then they must be attending college in the area of mental health or other medical studies. Potentially eligible students and their families will be contacted by the CSE Chairperson by April 15th to determine if they wish to be considered for this award. The winner will be required to sign a release allowing their name to be read at graduation. Application: A letter describing the student’s plans for further education including the course of study, school to be attended, and career plans – to be submitted to the CSE Chairperson by May 15th. Selection: The CSE Chairperson will submit the letters received to the Downer family and they will make the final selection. EASTERN STAR SCHOLARSHIP

Script: This award is given by the Frontier Chapter of the Eastern Star to a deserving senior who will be continuing their education in a vocational training program or college. Final selection of the winner is made by a committee chosen by the Eastern Star. This year’s award is $100. Eligibility: It will be the responsibility of the CSE Chairperson to identify the members of the senior class who are or have been CSE classified and who will earn a regular high school diploma. The CSE Chairperson shall have the option to include the names of students not actually classified but meeting the intent of the award. Potentially eligible students and their families will be contacted by the CSE Chairperson by April 15th to determine if they wish to be considered for this award. The winner will be required to sign a release allowing their name to be read at graduation. EDWARD (HAP) AND MARY FORAN COMMUNITY SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP

Script: To encourage young people to continue their education and to remain involved in community service, a scholarship is being established by Thomas and Muriel Campbell and their children Dan, Marie, Bill and Joe. Hap and Mary Foran’s contribution to community service in Chateaugay is best exemplified by their association with the Chateaugay Fire Company for more than fifty years. This scholarship is to be awarded to a graduating senior who will be attending college and has been involved in community service. Eligibility: CCS Graduating Senior Individual must be accepted into an accredited two or four-year college Financial Need Community Service Application: None required Selection: Standing Committee: Guidance Counselor High School Principal Senior Class Advisor (If the individual fails to attend a two or four-year college, the award amount needs to be refunded to the scholarship fund) How the recipient is notified: Announced at graduation How the award is disbursed: Check will be presented upon proof of paid tuition to an accredited two or four year college

FRANKLIN COUNTY MUSIC EDUCATOR’S ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP

Script: The Franklin County Music Educator’s Association uses proceeds from its annual All-County concerts to honor deserving music students in its member schools who will be continuing their education as a major in a music-related field. The award per eligible student will be $100. Eligibility: Graduating senior Attending post secondary program in a music field Application: Letter of intent signed by student and local music teacher Copy of letter from chosen college showing acceptance into a music major program Send letter of intent to current FCMEA President (Ask school music teacher who current President is) How the recipient is notified: The school guidance counselor will receive notification of an award and may choose how to notify the student (i.e. at graduation, school awards program, music department awards) How the award is disbursed: A check from FCMEA will be sent with the notification letter

HENRY GILLETTE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Script: The Frontier Lodge 517 of the Free and Accepted Masons established this memorial award to recognize a graduating senior who has been active in school and community organizations and otherwise practices the philosophy of the Masons. Eligibility: Preference will be given to a student whose parent or grandparent is (or was) a member in good standing of Frontier Lodge 517. Any student may apply, however. Application: Available from Lodge members and the guidance offices at Chateaugay Central, Franklin Academy and Northern Adirondack and must state the Lodge member upon whom eligibility is based. KENNETH S. HEPTONSTALL & RITA V. HEPTONSTALL SCHOLARSHIP

Script: The late Rita Heptonstall of Chateaugay provided in her will a bequest to Chateaugay Central School to establish a memorial scholarship. Mrs. Heptonstall was a devoted teacher for over 40 years, the last 25 in the Chateaugay School system and demonstrated a real love for children. The Heptonstall Scholarship is awarded each year to two students who have been accepted into accredited teacher certification programs. This year’s awards are each in the amount of $350. Eligibility: Graduating seniors of Chateaugay Central School Accepted in an accredited teacher certification program Application: None required, but the selection committee will look for evidence that each successful candidate is making a realistic career choice based on academic achievement and paid or volunteer experiences working with children. Selection: Standing committee using criteria listed above and also considering financial need and lack of other recognition or awards. How the recipient is notified: Announced at graduation (Letter from school) How the award is disbursed: School issues checks to recipients after proof of matriculation is presented

THE JOHNSTON SCHOLARSHIP

Script: The late Andrew M. Johnston, of this village, established a trust fund at the time of his death to be known as the “Andrew M. Johnston and Anna M. Johnston Scholarship Fund for Graduates of Chateaugay Central School.” Mr. Johnston directed that the interest from this fund be divided annually between the boy and girl who regularly attends any Protestant church in the towns of Chateaugay, Burke or Belmont, and who, in accordance with a written report by the principal of Chateaugay Central School, has the highest scholastic standing during his or her four years of high school. Eligibility: Graduating senior of CCS Regularly attends Protestant church in Chateaugay, Burke or Belmont as certified in writing by the Pastor Highest rank in the class One male and one female Application: None required, but students must have a letter from their pastor certifying regular church attendance Selection: Automatic if students satisfy the eligibility criteria How the recipient is notified: Announced at graduation How the award is disbursed: Checks are usually presented to the recipients at services in their respective churches around the time of graduation.

THE JOHNSTON & MCGIBBON FAMILIES SCHOLARSHIP

Script: The late Walter McGibbon of Chateaugay provided scholarship funds in his will to be awarded annually to graduates of Chateaugay Central School. Scholarships are administered by the Board of Education using the annual interest earned by the fund in accordance with guidelines and recommendations of a scholarship committee appointed by the Board of Education and approved by them. We are pleased to award a “Johnston and McGibbon Families Scholarship” to the top two students in the graduating class who will be entering an accredited 2, 3 or 4 year college in September. These students will be receiving a similar award for their second year of studies. Eligibility: CCS graduating senior Class rank Continuing education full-time at an accredited, degree-granting institution Application: None required Selection: Automatic for those students eligible who provide proof of matriculation How the recipient is notified: Announced at graduation. Students know in April after final ranks are determined How the award is disbursed: Checks issued by the school in August after students present evidence of matriculation

DONALD W. KNIGHT SCHOLARSHIP

Script: Donald W. Knight, a 1955 graduate of Chateaugay Central School, as well as a science teacher here for 5 years in the early 1960’s has provided funds to establish a yearly $250 scholarship to be awarded to a graduating senior who has high academic achievement in the sciences and shows a strong work ethic in science class and lab. Eligibility: CCS graduating senior Continuing education full-time at an accredited, degree-granting institution Application: None required Selection: Standing committee including guidance counselor How the recipient is notified: Announced at graduation How the award is disbursed: Checks issued by the school in August after student presents evidence of matriculation - 22 -

GARRY L. LAFLESH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Script: Garry was a devoted and beloved custodian at CCS for 16 years. He also served for many years as President of the local chapter of CSEA, the non-teaching union. As a symbol of Garry’s affection and respect for his colleagues, his family has established this scholarship award to be presented to the child or grandchild of a CCS non-teaching employee who attains the highest class standing. This year’s award is in the amount of $300. Eligibility: 1) Graduating Senior of CCS who will be attending an accredited 2, 3 or 4 year school 2) Child or grandchild of a present or past CCS non-teaching employee (must have a minimum of 5 years of continuous service) who has the highest class standing as determined by the school policy.

3) If no one meets the criterion in 2, the winner will be selected by the standing committee on scholarships as follows:

1. Class standing in top 10 2. Pursuing a career in teaching 3. Student not receiving many other awards

Script: These awards, in the amount of $100 each, are given in loving memory of Johnny by his family. The winners are selected by the family using criteria established by them. Preference will be given to students who are pursuing careers in agriculture or human services. Script: The Music Department of Chateaugay Central School uses donations received at the annual Spring Concert to honor a deserving music student who will be continuing their education in a music-related field. NYS CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS & POLICE BENEVOLENT ASSOCIATION

SCHOLARSHIPS

NYSCOPBA has established a statewide scholarship program for members’ dependents. Applicants must be graduating seniors who are enrolling in a post high school program. The applicant’s parent must be a dues-paying member of NYSCOPBA in good standing. Each award is $500 and will be paid to the recipient after successful completion of one full semester. Information is available to parents at all correctional facilities.

O’CONNOR SCHOLARSHIP

Script: The family of Fred O’Connor is making an award of $300 in memory of their father. The award is given to a Chateaugay Central student who will be continuing his/her education in agriculture or an ag-related curriculum at a 2 or 4 year college. Eligibility: CCS graduating senior Application: None required Selection: Standing Committee with select up to three finalists, who will be referred to Mr. Pat O’Connor for final selection How the recipient is notified: Announced at graduation (Letter from school) How the award is disbursed: Check is sent to the recipient by Mr. O’Connor after successful completion of one semester and matriculation for the second semester

Script: The Presbytery of Northern New York established this memorial award to recognize a graduating senior who has proven him or herself to be hard-working and caring for people. Eligibility: Graduating senior Student who worked to the best of their ability but may not have been recognized with other awards Continuing their education Application: None required Selection: High School Principal Guidance Counselor Senior Class Advisor How the recipient is notified: Announced at graduation (Letter from school) How the award is disbursed: Paid by mail when proof of successful completion of a semester has been submitted by the student to the Presbytery of Northern New York.

Script: Our local chapter of Rotary International, as part of its ongoing effort to support and encourage area youth, has established a scholarship to honor and reward a graduating senior who exemplifies Rotary’s motto of “Service above Self.” Selection of the winner will be made by Chateaugay Central School’s standing committee on scholarships after a review of written applications. The winner will receive an award of $500 for each year of his/her two or four year matriculation in an accredited post-secondary school or college, provided he/she maintains at least a “C” average each year. Failure to do so will result in the loss of said scholarship. Proof of satisfactory grades must be submitted to the high school counseling office each year by June 30th. Eligibility: Graduating senior attending an accredited post-secondary program or college Application: Each applicant must submit, in writing, a summary of their qualifications for this scholarship. The applications must address the Rotary motto of “Service above Self” and may contain supporting references and letters of recommendation. Selection: Standing committee plus a representative of the Chateaugay Rotary Club How the recipient is notified: Announced at graduation How the award is disbursed: Personal check to the recipient from Chateaugay Rotary Club after presentation of proof of matriculation to the club (usually late August)

GLENN SKINNER MEMORIAL CULINARY ARTS SCHOLARSHIP

Script: Family and friends of the late Glenn Skinner, a 1979 graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and Chateaugay Lake resident, established this memorial award at the time of his death to recognize a graduating senior who has chosen to continue his or her education in the culinary arts field. . Eligibility: A graduating senior at Chateaugay Central School who has been accepted into an accredited post-secondary culinary arts program. The recipient must have carried at least a C+ (79%) cumulative average in high school at the time of selection. Preference should be given to the student showing the most financial need. Application: None required Selection: Standing Scholarship Committee How the recipient is notified: Announced at graduation How the award is disbursed: Check is issued to the recipient by CCS after successful completion of one semester and proof of matriculation for the second semester.

CHATEAUGAY TEACHERS ASSOCIATION/CAFETERIA STAFF SCHOLARSHIPS Script: Each Fall during American Education Week the Chateaugay Teachers Association, with the help and cooperation of the cafeteria staff, sponsors a spaghetti supper and open house. The proceeds from this annual event are used to fund scholarships for graduating seniors. Eligibility: Graduating senior Planning to continue education as full-time student Financial need Application: None required Selection: Volunteer committee composed of elementary and secondary teachers, Mr. Gugliotta, and two members from the cafeteria staff How the recipient is notified: Announced at graduation (Letter from CTA president) How the award is disbursed: Checks are distributed to the recipients by the treasurer of the CTA after showing evidence of matriculation for 2nd semester
