BUYING A CHASSIS
£WHY REPLACE A CHASSIS?
Your chassis is the most safety critical item on your vehicle. A rotten chassis can lead to lots of problems down the road so having a sound chassis is vital to a long lasting vehicle.
Original chassis can be easily corroded or damaged as some were given the bare minimum of corrosion protection from original manufacture.
The most common chassis problem is rust which can form on the outside of the chassis from mud and dirt build up. It can form inside the chassis through ingress and rot from the inside out. Look out for holes, damage and brittle framework.
WHAT TYPE OF CHASSIS?
Most chassis are galvanised, which is a zinc plating that protects the chassis from rust. Purists may prefer the original steel versions but these are more prone to rust and will need further protection to prevent rust forming.
On the market currently you will find chassis built in different styles: Standard, Retro (close to original spec) and Heavy Duty. Which one you choose depends on what you are looking for in a chassis!

Buy a pressure washer and regularly power wash the chassis, especially the hollow sections where mud and road salt can accumulate and cause rot. Waxoyl the inside and outside of your chassis for longevity. Ask your local garage for advice.
