Charts and graphs

This section provides guidance on creating charts and graphs to ensure that they meet Pearson’s commitment to AA standards of accessibility.

By their nature, charts and graphs may exhibit variable parameters, so there may be instances where your requirements are not covered by this guidance. In such cases please adopt a pragmatic approach, follow our recommendations, and always check your solution with our accessibility team. Please direct all enquiries to [email protected]

Pearson Brand Guidelines 2016 Charts and graphs

Charts and graphs play a vital role across all our communications, and it’s important that they are all created with accessibility in mind.

When creating charts and graphs, the colours should be used in the order shown on this page. This will produce the highest level of contrast, making them as accessible as possible.

Using the color palette shown on the previous page will alone no be sufficient to comply with our commitment to level AA accessibility. To further improve our users’ ability to distinguish between the parameters, please also implement the following techniques.

Use annotationsThese will make your values easier to distinguish between. Place your annotations in the white space outside the chart or graph, clearly labeling the area to which they belong. Where practical, you can add colors and values to the key.

Include white spaceLeaving a white space between each bar or segment will prevent multiple parameters which share similar values, from being seen as one. On bar charts, please separate each bar manually, while on pie charts please manually add a key line to separate the sections.

Percentage of children leaving school without education

At least 68 million primary schoolage children around the world are denied their right to education.

One of the main obstacles preventing children from going to school is poverty. We believe that the poverty cycle can be broken by all children getting a good education.

More children are now in education than ever before

Don’t mix up the order of colors or apply them without adding any white space, as this may make parameters hard to distinguish between.

Don’t place your values inside the color areas of your charts, as this will make them harder to read.
