Charlotte, NC

We here in the Carolinas har-

bor our fair share of ghosts.

Always have. Murderous

cross-Atlantic expeditions by

our ancestors, encounters

with Native American Indi-

ans, the Revolutionary War,

the Civil War and a history

of campfire stories full of

black hearts and unknown

malevolent beings populate

our culture. Don’t let the blue

skies, birds singing and lush

green grasses fool you. There

are things here that will...and

should, scare the hell out of

you. If you’re not afraid to ex-

plore what awaits you, we’ve

provided a guide for your

Hallows Eve celebrations.

Make no bones about it,

these stories and destinations

are not for all—or all ages.

Turn the page and proceed

with extreme caution.

< IN THE NEW AND BOOMING VILLAGE OF AYRSLEYWhat’s old is new again. You can hear the screams now...

HALLOWEEN HAUNTS

HALLOWEEn HAUNTSDARKNESS PINESWe begin with what may be the most brutal challenge—intended for adults only. Darkness Pines Haunted Trail is one of the scariest, longest, and goriest haunt-ed attractions you will ever go to. For 1 low price you get the Haunted Hayride, Haunted Trail and monster museum. You can enjoy scenes from horror movies on a 50 ft. screen while you wait, or warm up by the bonfire. This year the Hayride is

Haunted and the Trail is half guided half unguided. Come see us every Thursday, Friday and Saturday beginning Sept. 24th. You won’t regret coming to the Pines!!

THE HAUNTED MILLIn the 1970s haunted houses were around every corner and ticked across dozens of dimly-lit drive-in movie screens during the month of October. To relive those days do you dare approach The Haunted Mill in Belmont, NC.? Just a short Dragula ride by lantern light from uptown Charlotte brings you to a bygone time. An embattered mill in disrepair houses the nightmares that gave birth to a nation obsessed with

horror. Some date back decades. Others are here by design of creators who spend every minute of every day and night—ev-ery one—to ensure that you experience sheer terror. Oh, how the long-dead who finally escaped the horrors of life must revile those who now live well and pay to experience terror. Will they let you leave? The Haunted Mill is a collaboration of the world’s most accomplished terror aficiona-dos and horror convention mega-promot-ers. This group produces The Mad Monster Party each year in Charlotte and in other major cities around the US. For a peek visit

www.hauntedmillnc.com.

SCAROWINDSKudos to that one individual who said—“what about putting an S in front of the sign?”. And the hundreds who toil and fuss to make sure that the thrill capital of the Carolinas becomes a post-apocalypse freak show. It’s no joke. There’s something uniquely creepy about towering roller-coaster rides in the pitch dark. And your family happy place being invaded by every manner of ghoul, each with clearly bad intentions.

CAMP FEARVoted Scariest Haunted Attraction in NC by Hauntworld.com visitors. Meet Daniel and learn his story first-hand, if you make it through part 1, the group will treat you to part 2 of Camp Fear. Will You make it out of the cave? Will you survive Clown Chaos in 3D? Face your fears in this, the most radical of our listed attractions. It includes a visit to the haunted house, walk of terror, trail of fears and a wicked collection of iconic horror movie attractions. www.campfearnc.com

THE MYERS HOUSEWe’ll go ahead and state publicly now that we Prowler peeps firmly believe that John Carpenter’s HALLOWEEN was and remains the most pivotal and important movie to usher horror into the mainstream. Oh, and we think Rob Zombie’s remake was awesome, too. A modern foray into what Michael Myers would really be like—sav-age, monstrous. As much as we like the movies, we can’t imagine buying a house, living there, and remodeling it to be an EXACT replica of the Myer’s house. We’d be scared to sleep. But that’s exactly what you’ll find here. Put yourself in the movie and feel the fear. www.myershousenc.com

GRAVE DIGGERS BALLLong ago when Charlotte fell hush at the sight of the moon, visionaries of night-life made a land-grab in Uptown. There would, after-all, be a place in this new me-tropolis built on Baptist ground for night owls and all others who feel that certain, crushing call of the night. Among them were BMG, the group which now secures a playground for all at The Epicentre and in Nightlife District locations off 6th and College. Who else could bring Flo-Rida and 70,000 costumed souls together for The Grave Diggers Ball? Beware. You might just find what you are looking for and it might not be good for you. Go all out with your costumes and rouse your rowdiest friends to create soon-to-be-epic memories. kiss951.com/grave-diggers-ball-2015-fea-turing-florida-and-omi/

RICH-N-BENNETT’S 15TH ANNUAL BAR CRAWLThe Apocalypse comes to uptown Char-lotte every year—it’s Rich & Bennett’s Halloween Pub Crawl. Join over 70,000 and crawl from pub to pub from 1pm to 2am. PINHEAD’S GRAVEYARD, ASHEVILLESee for yourself why Western North Caroli-na’s longest running graveyard is seriously spooky. FACE YOUR FEARS

I N T H E D A R K N E S SYou didn’t zipline, sky-dive or base jump this summer. Will you let another season pass and miss the opportunity to come face-to-face with your greatest fears? Who will you be in the darkest of night?

WHICH GHOUL WILL YOU BE?

MORRIS COSTUMESLong before Americans could buy a Hal-loween costume (or would even want to) at your local department store, the brilliant and macabre imagination of actor/make-up artist and showman Phillip Morris, from Charlotte, regaled upon the stage. His craft hearkened back to carnivals, boardwalk oddities and small-town spook shows. You could call him the Bela Lugosi of camp, creepiness and costumes. And his pas-sion would eventually inspire millions of buyers to order items from his burgeoning costume business which began 50 years ago. In modern years, Morris Costumes expanded from a dusty, cramped base-ment to a Charlotte hallmark in oft-for-gotten East Charlotte—and beyond into the far reaches of the Internet age where Morris Costumes now serves virtually every country on earth. As legions of fans clamored for Hollywood-quality costumes and make-up accessories, Morris Cos-tumes grew to fill the playbill. His family and a dedicated group of fans/employees succeed Phillip in delivering the thrill of alternate egos, cosplay and realism in a broadening genre. We imagine he would consider this longevity his greatest hat-trick. A true Charlotte legend. www.morriscostumes.com

HALLOWEEN EXPRESSA mother load of madness awaits Hal-loween enthusiasts of all ages here. With stores around the Charlotte area, you’ll find the most popular costumes and all of the accessories to create your own look. www.halloweenexpress.com

SPOOKY MOVIES & TV

TRICK ‘r TREATTrick ‘r Treat is a 2007 anthology horror film which stars Dylan Baker, Brian Cox and Anna Paquin and centers on four Hal-loween-related horror stories. One com-mon element that ties the stories together is the presence of Sam, a mysterious child trick-or-treater wearing shabby orange pajamas with a burlap sack over his head. Sam makes an appearance in all the sto-ries whenever someone breaks Halloween traditions. Despite being delayed for two years and having a very limited theatrical release, the film received much critical ac-claim and has since garnered a strong cult following. The filmmakers announced that a sequel, Trick ‘r Treat 2, is in the works.

THE BUCHANANSIts a total guess ,but probably some-where between 2000-3000 items

PROWLERAnd tell us please about a few of the extra-special items that you love the most? THE BUCHANANSOne of the most unique is the original ‘spotter board’ used by Bill Rosinski, the Voice of the Panthers, to broad-cast the very first Panther game. It was the Hall of Fame game in Canton, OH in 1995. Among other things, it lists Frank Reich as the starting QB and Kerry Collins was a 3rd stringer. We’ve got about 20 different footballs, signed by everyone from Jerry Richard-son to Fred Lane, a 3 foot tall signed Julius Peppers bobble head, and a pair of Cam Newton’s one of a kind Super-man cleats. ( Shhh!! Don’t tell him!) PROWLERWere their skeptics at first? Were either of you the “brake” on this or were you both the “gas”? THE BUCHANANSWe were both ‘all-in’ from the begin-ning! Right from the onset of the team, we began acquiring so much Panther paraphernalia, the stuff really needed a ‘home’. The garage just evolved from there, and our cars haven’t been allowed inside in over 14 years.

PROWLERAnd have any of the Panther players or coaches stopped by? THE BUCHANANSWe have an annual Chili Cook-off that we host at the Garage Mahal every year, and we were fortunate to have former Panther Mike Fox as one of the judges. He is the one and only Panther player who has seen it in person. We also hosted a book signing for the voice

ON THE PROWL | CAROLINA SUPER FANS

THEY MAY JUST BE THE BESt FAN COUPLEBEST IN THE NFL? HEAR US OUTBILL AND CINDY BUCHANAN recently stopped by the Prowler Magazine Pit-stop at the corner of Mint and More-head during Fan Fest and shared the story of their Panther Garage with us. The spacious and vivacious, taj-ma-Pan-thers-hal has been featured on ESPN.com and in Sporting News Magazine. We couldn’t wait to share some pics with our readers and have the Buchan-an’s tell the story of this football fan’s fantasy cave.

PROWLERAll great things have to start small. What was the first piece of memorabilia that went up in your garage? THE BUCHANANSIt was a silly little plastic shampoo bottle in the shape of a Panther football player. Haven’t seen another one since.

PROWLERAnd what was the last? THE BUCHANANSIt’s a tie between the new Panther themed custom painted spin bike that we got each other for our anniversary, and the shadow box we had made to hold the jersey Bill wore onstage when

he presented the Panther’s #1 draft pick in Chicago this past May. (He was ran-domly selected in a drawing of the PSL owners for an all expense paid VIP trip to Chicago. It was like Disney world for football fans! Loved it!) Every summer we do an ‘off-season upgrade’ and those were both just recently installed.

PROWLERTell us (if you can) roughly just how many pieces of fan memorabilia went into this, the most awesome of all Caro-lina Panther “fan caves”?

PANTHER

PANTHER PASSIONThese folks aren’t fair weather. They aren’t hobbyists. They’re dyed-in-the-wool Panther blue bloods born of the same spark that brought the NFL to Charlotte. Their passion has transcended highs and lows and gave way to the groundswell of en-thusiasm and faith that makes this franchise real. #keeppounding.

of the Panthers, Bill Rosinski and had over 200 people in the Garage. I wish that more players and coaches could see it, especially when its full of rabid Pan-ther fans on game day. We want them to know that the Panthers have just as loyal fans as Pittsburgh or Green Bay.

PROWLERWhat was the early reaction from your neighbors, family and kids? THE BUCHANANSInitially, it was ‘oh that’s nice’, but no big deal. And now? We have friends and ‘friends of friends’ that call all the time and ask if they can bring by their - Dad - Friend - Coworker - Boss - to see the Garage. Its gotten to be kind of a local pilgrimage for football fans. Its really fun to watch a person’s reaction the first time they see it. Their jaw just drops.

PROWLERAre their plans to add something in the near future?

THE BUCHANANSWe are trying to figure out an expansion project. Maybe an attached car port that would accommodate more fans on game day, but cover our vehicles from the weather the rest of the week.

PROWLERWho would you be most honored to have a photo with in your garage? THE BUCHANANSIt would have to be Mr. Richardson. We would love for him to see what his vision to bring an NFL team here 20 years ago really means to us.

PROWLERAnd how in the world do you decide who to invite? THE BUCHANANSWe always say, ‘If you build it, they will come’. Our friends all know that they all have a standing invitation to come watch a Panther game. Cindy and I attend every Panther home game. We haven’t missed one since they came to

Charlotte. But for every away game, the Garage Mahal is open. There’s 5 TV’s and 3 bars, a fireplace, and lots of Panther fandom for anyone who wants to come over and watch the game. The neighbors are awesome! Everyone brings a contribution for the tailgate table, and we all cheer the Panthers.

PROWLERAny advice for envious fans out there who might begin their own fan cave?THE BUCHANANSBuild it out of love, not just to build it. Everything in our garage has its own story. When you put all that together, you have more than a great place to watch Panther football. You’ll have a ton of great memories.

Thank you so much for your time—we’re looking forward to a dominant Carolina Panther season. How can they lose with fans like Bill and Cindy Buchanan!?
