Meet New NC GovernorPat McCroryWith a record seven terms as Mayor

of Charlotte, his is not exactly anew face to many Charlotteans. His role as a champion for eco-

nomic growth in the Charlotte Region came at acrucial point in our fair city’s development and hisimpact is still felt years after he left office.

What is “new” about having Pat McCrory asGovernor of North Carolina is the likely elevatedlevel of interaction and connection the Governor’spost will have for Charlotte and the rest ofWestern North Carolina. At times Raleigh hasseemed a world away from Charlotte as key stateissues arose.

We at Prowler are looking forward to seeing“Mayor Pat”, now “Governor Pat” if you please, take the same decisive action with our state in theareas of taxes, crime, energy, transportation, edu-cation and of course, economic development thathe formerly has within the city.

Learn more andbecome connected toyour new Governor atwww.PatMcCrory.com,make friends onFacebook or follow himon Twitter.

He was a greatMayor, and always a goodsport—see a classic coverfrom a previous publica-tion, Charlotte’s Best, where Mayor Pat donneda slightly dusty Superman costume from MorrisCostumes to channel Clark Kent—all as heaccepted his award for Man of the Year.

Your New CongressmanRichard HudsonLike Governor McRory, Richard Hudson is nostranger to those who follow local politics. Heserved former congressman (R) Robin Hayes asDistrict Director in Concord and Rockingham. Healso served as Chief of Staff in Washington for fiveyears. This is, however, Richard’s first time in officehimself. You’ve no doubt seen his photo manytimes here in Prowler, as his friends on our ownstaff have covered his journey into office.

Following his election to office as U.S.Representative for North Carolina’s 8th District,National Journal recognized Richard as a “risingstar” in the political world. Richard’s initial focus is on reducing taxes, creat-

ing jobs and retraining our work force. Soundsgood to us—we’re looking forward to watchinghim work for the people of Charlotte and NorthCarolina. Congrats, Congressman Hudson!

BIGGER & BETTERL iving in the Queen City of Charlotte has its perks. Native or newby, you’ve had to

notice the recent uptick in the frequency and quality of top touring performers. It’smind-blowing. Charlotte has always had a pulse for live entertainment, but with a

multitude of new venues built in the last decade, you’d be hard-pressed to find a genreof music that isn’t well-represented—and crazy to miss some of the upcoming shows.

Coach Wes Long believes the Royalscan go all the wayagain this season.

CHARLOTTE BOBCATS PLAY ON

I t was a spectacular site for fans when the new class of Charlotte Bobcats piled upseveral wins in a row—but most of us knew it wouldn’t be sustainable. And yet, despite the recent slide, the games are great entertainment. There’s hustle in ouryoung team, and with great offers from the franchise on tics, it’s hard to beat the

entertainment value of an NBA game and all of the fanfare that comes along with it.Celebrity sightings are a given, and then there are the Lady Cats.

There were high hopes and some dark days in Carolina this

past season. We watched the slow, sometimes painful matura-

tion of a gifted athlete at the helm. Some days he won games,

other days he lost them. There were sparks of greatness on

both sides of the ball and in the end most fans may have

enough to tide us over and hang on to as we sit out this post

season and dream of something greater when a more

determined, more focused pack of Panthers takes the field in

2013. Here are some memorable moments to tide you over.

RIVERA TO STAYQuestion Answered

As the Carolina Panthers took the field in 2012 a sense ofexcitement quite possibly turned into a sense of entitle-ment for elements of the team. After a record-settingromp in 2011 yieled no Playoff spot, yet showed promise

and gave many reason to look forward to the 2012 season. And whynot? Key players returned healthy, the talent in the Carolina back-field consisted of two talented and powerful runners in Stewart andWilliams ($83 Million combined) and now a powerhouse fullback inTolbert. And of course, #1, Cam Newton, now with a full NFL offseason under his belt. Steve Smith was ready without question andLaFell and Murphy were stepping up themselves. The O-line washealthy, Greg Olsen was prepared to handle short yardage at the TEspot. Things were looking good on the O side—minus JeremyShockey.

It had been the defense that struggled in 2011, so now with Bea-son back, Davis back and our #1 pick Kuechly rounding out a rota-tional linebacker squad this looked great, too. Up front CharlesJohnson was fired up and providing great competition for a highly-explosive Greg Hardy. Deep in the field Godfrey and Munnerlynappeared up to the task.

Yet from the start, things seemed flat. These high expectationswere exacting a toll on this youthful franchise. And the answersdidn’t seem to come. The celebrated offensive play calling of RobChudzinski seemed to read like an open book to teams who now hadhad time to study them and Newton. The holes clogged up, Newtonand Williams found themselves backing up and scrambling versusstriding through for first downs. Stewart performed well early butleft the season soon with an ankle injury. And the pressure and

crumbling confidence soon infected the receivers as well. Over-thrown balls by a pressured Cam Newton left receivers gasping forair and shaking their heads. Many balls placed perfectly weredropped by typically steady hands—like those of Smith, LaFell andMurphy. And then the O-line started cracking with injuries andblown assignments. This is how it happens. This is how you lose.

The defense was dealt blows early—Beason—back andthen...gone. There were miracles—Thomas Davis returning afterhis third ACL surgery prompted many sportscasters to go on and onabout his tenacity. Excepting Manning and Peterson, he was a shoe-in for NFL Comeback Player of the Year. And another miracle him-self—Luke Kuechly, drafted first overall in the NFL Draft—led theleague in tackles, was named Defensive Player of the Week andsurely changed the nature of final scores throughout the weekendwith outstanding stewardship at middle linebacker—now question-ing Beason’s return in 2013. And the beasts—Charles Johnson, GregHardy, Dwan Edwards...they all played well, rallying the team latein the season with punishing hits on QBs and RBs to set the tone forwins.

And perhaps the man most in the spotlight as the loses piled up,second year head coach Ron Rivera—his was a lonely journey attimes. It would have been easy at one point for this team to sink intototal destruction. We’ve seen that here in Carolina in recent years.Yet, staying calm, refocusing players, and piling up each difficultwin, he managed to hang on to dignity, and ultimately, his job.

Next year it appears that this team will be able to enter the sea-son with a different sense, a sense of workmanship, competiitvenessand ultimately, pride. Fans are looking forward to that.

STAGE is SET2013 Opponents

What do you think? Visit us on Facebook—Prowler Magazine—and let us know what you think our record for 2013 will be. Likeus for updates on all Carolina Panther developments.

So we know what we’re in for, here is the official word from theNFL and the Carolina Panthers on our opponents for next sea-son: The Panthers' opponents for the 2013 season have been de-termined with the conclusion of the 2012 regular season.

In addition to home and away games against NFC South foes At-lanta, New Orleans and Tampa Bay, Carolina will play all four teamsfrom both the NFC West and AFC East. The Panthers' remaining two2013 intraconference opponents are based on the 2012 standings. Car-olina will host the New York Giants and play at Minnesota since allthree teams finished second in their respective divisions.

Dates and times will be announced by the NFL in the spring. Afterthat, an on-sale date for single-game tickets to Panthers home games forthe 2013 season will be determined.

ABOUT CAROLINA'S 2013 OPPONENTSThe Panthers will play seven games against teams that finished the

year with a .500 or better record, including six contests against oppo-nents who made the playoffs during the 2012 campaign.

Carolina has compiled a 14-6 regular season record versus the NFCWest since division realignment in 2002.

The Panthers will face the Cardinals for the 11th time in the last 13years after only playing once in the franchise's first six seasons.

This will be the 12th regular season meeting between Arizona andCarolina, making the Cardinals the Panthers' most common non-divi-sion opponent (excluding former NFC West mates St. Louis and SanFrancisco) in team history.

The Panthers own a 7-13 all-time record against the AFC East. The Dolphins are the only NFL team Carolina has never beaten in

the regular season, losing all four previous games to Miami. The NFL's scheduling formula implemented in 2002 with realignmentguarantees that all teams play each other on a regular, rotating basis.Under the formula, every team within a division plays 16 games as fol-lows:

Home and away games against its three division opponents (sixgames).

The four teams from another division within its conference on a ro-tating three-year cycle (four games).

The four teams from a division in the other conference on a rotatingfour-year cycle (four games).

Two intraconference teams based on the prior year's standings (twogames).

Beginning in 2010, a change was made to how teams are paired inthe schedule rotation to ensure that teams playing the AFC and NFCWest divisions would not have to make two west coast trips (e.g. at SanFrancisco and at Seattle), while other teams in their division had none(e.g. at. St. Louis and at Arizona). Source: www.Panthers.com
