I would also like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land and pay my respects to the Awabakal elders both past, present and future. 2019 has indeed been an amazing year for Charlestown Public School. This year our main focus has been on encouraging our students to be responsible, respectful, and safe students who act with integrity and kindness. Integrity in its simplest form means how you behave when no one else is watching you. We have school leaders who have shown integrity throughout the year, students going on excursions and representing us in sporting teams, debating and public speaking who have all displayed integrity. Our students are making good choices in developing Integrity. Staff have also been preparing students to develop the characteristics of a good learner. Our students now have a range of strategies on how to improve their learning from being risk takers, using self talk, having a growth mindset, being curious and setting goals to using feedback with their peers and teacher. Our students have given their best and our school has had marvellous successes. Academically, there were outstanding results in the Newcastle Permanent Maths competition. We gained a high distinction, 4 distinctions and numerous merit and credit awards. Our NAPLAN results showed excellent value added growth in all areas for Yr 5 and in Yr 3 we increased students in the top two bands for reading and numeracy. Our Yr 5 and Yr 6 debating teams grew in strength with each debate and we are very proud of their efforts. Two of our students received “Highly Commended” in the Zone Public Speaking competition, with another one receiving a “Runners Up” award and our students have improved their short term/long term memory with excellence in warm ups. In Creative and Practical Arts, dance, choir and musical groups participated in a wide range of activities including; Grandparents Day and Charlestown Square performances in Education Week and Starstruck. Not to mention each class performing in our concert this year. You have already observed our senior students signing the National Anthem and today you will also hear our wonderful K-2 choir. Our specialist music teacher, Mrs Walsh has introduced a percussion band and a drumming group, as well as the talented ukulele group. Our drumming group enjoyed themselves at the African Week festival in Term 2. Our music program provides rich and varied activities enhancing students’ engagement. In the sporting arena our school enjoyed success in 2019 with both the swimming and athletic carnivals being fun days for all. Students represented the school in soccer, netball, swimming, cross country, basketball and athletics. One of our students represented the Region in tennis, finishing 11th in the state competition. This year we participated in the netball gala day. The students in Years 3-4 were also part of the Charlestown Cup and the Whitebridge High School Year 9 sport mentoring program. All students enjoyed cross country, gymnastics and orienteering coaching sessions and our primary students participated in Lifeskills and Mindfulness sessions. Our students organized a fundraiser for Stewart House and held a highly successful fundraiser for Bobin Public school which recently burnt down in the bushfires.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the P&C for their support of the school in 2019. Our President, Linda Todorovski is supported by her fellow executive, Vice President Vanessa Bulloch, Secretary Kylie Pheils and Treasurer Kylee Lowe who are the engine room of P&C working behind the scenes to keep the organization running. The P&C also took on the role of organizing the canteen once again for the netball gala day, the Charlestown Cup and also catered for over 60 adults at the Hearing Conference and the Orienteering Professional Development course. As a small school we are really fortunate to have such a great fundraising committee and a P&C with a strong vision for the school. This year we have seen the new shade sail, rewiring the cricket nets and also the new sound system in the hall purchased as part of the P&C fundraising. From all of us here we thank you for always being there for us. Whilst we are lucky to have a small band of volunteers, new helpers would be most welcome!

This year we also acknowledge the contributions of our parents, Nancy Toavanu, Betti and Bill Sacmaroski, Natalie Filo, Lee Maddison, Nick and Margaret Ophir, whose youngest children Chloe, Eligh, Maddie, Chelsea and Georgia are leaving the school this year. We appreciate all of your support throughout the years and

thank you for your valuable time and tireless effort, dedication and passion at our school. There are also many others who have been there for us: reading group helpers, BBQ chefs, chauffeurs and clothing shop ladies. We have really valued your support this year.

Thank you to our Canteen Committee led by Nancy Toavanua with Kylee Lowe as the treasurer. You have done a marvellous job looking after tummy matters and ensuring our school has implemented the new canteen strategy.

Our teaching staff also deserve special thanks in 2019. It has been a challenging year with the implementation of explicit instruction and critical and timely feedback. We have implemented a new Science and Technology curriculum and are looking forward to the new PDHPE curriculum in 2020. This year all staff were trained in iPLAY to improve our knowledge of physical activity. We welcomed new staff with Mrs Neale, Mrs Prasad and Mr Dominick. The staff always give that bit extra to encourage positive relationships and providing the best learning opportunities for your child. The excellent outcomes achieved by our students are a credit to the staff of Charlestown Public School and the close partnership with parents who value their child’s education.

Our teachers are always well supported by our ancillary staff led by Mrs Janelle Stone and Mrs Bartsch. Janelle and Rayna have done a wonderful job. Both of these ladies have put on their happy faces and cared for the sick, counselled students and ensured our school’s finances are on track. Mrs Stone decided to retire during July, so we welcomed Mrs Kylee Lowe to our front office. Our teacher’s aides also deserve special mention Mrs Christie, Mrs Douglass, Mrs McDonald and Mr Barlow. They provided the coal face support for our students and teachers, performing jobs well beyond the call of duty.

To our Year 6 students, you have been a wonderful group who have contributed to the school in different ways. Your maturity, sense of fun and perspective have made you a credit to your families and your school. I hope that you take away happy

memories and a significant repertoire of skills, knowledge and values as you move to high school. A special mention to our school captains, Allie and Ryan, prefects Eligh and Jacob, and House Captains Alexys and Cadell who have contributed much to the school this year. It has been wonderful to watch your personal growth and maturity. With the support of the school community, student leaders have raised significant sums of money for a number of worthwhile causes. Congratulations and best wishes and I wish you every success in the years to come.

I would also like to thank Mrs Gill who is the principle organiser of today’s event and our school leaders for compering today’s proceedings.

In closing, thank you to all of the individuals, families and businesses that have supported our school during 2019. By working together in a trusting, honest relationship combined with your encouragement and support we have raised the academic bar for our children and encouraged respect, integrity, resilience and kindness.

From my family to you and your family, I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
