    UNPACKING YOUR SHOTGUN

    When you remove the shotgun from its box, you willsee the 2 major components shown above, the barreland the shotgun (F ig. 1). Your VR-MC shotgun shouldcome with 3 choke tubes, one installed in the barreland 2 extra tubes, along with a choke tube wrenchand a spare O-ring. You should have an instructionmanual, a SAAMI safety booklet and a NSSFpamphlet. A gunlock is also included for your use.(Please read the instructions included w ith yourgunlock for proper use of this added security andsafe ty dev ic e) .

    The bolt handle of your shotgun is protected fromdam age by a rubber pad. S im ply slide your fingersunder the rubber pad as shown in F ig. 2 and lift thepad c ompletely off the bolt h and le.2

    MANUAL SAFETYYour shotgun is equipped with a manual trigger blocksafety button located in the trigger guard, just behindthe trigger. W hen the button is pushed from the left s ideof the receiver, protruding to the right side, the trigger isblocked and the safety is on as shown in F ig. 3

    When the button is pushed from the right side of thereceiver, protruding to the left side, you will see a redcircle on the safety button indicating the safety is offand the shotgun is in an unsafe condition, ready to fire ifthe trigger is pulled, as shown in Fig. 4.

    WARNINGThe manual safety of your shotgun should always be onexcept for when you are ready to pull the trigger and firethe shotgun. This w ill help insure that no accidentaldischarges take place. You should only have the safetyoff, and be able to see the red line on the left side of thereceiver, when you are ready to shoot.

    Unscrew the magazine cap from the front of the forendin a counter clockw ise direction as shown in Fig. 6.

    In o rd er to properly insert the barrel into the receiver iti s necessa ry to release the bolt from its lockedposition in the receiver. As the bolt is under springtension, care must be given to properly releasing thebolt so th at c omponen ts do no t come off the end ofthe magazine tube during this procedure. In Fig. 8, yo uwill see the location of the action release button.

    Refer to Fig. 9. While holding the bolt handle with yourright hand, depress the action release button with yourleft thumb and allow the bolt to go forward slowly w ithyour right hand until the bolt handle reaches the end oft he r eceiv er .

    Carefully align the barrel w ith the receiver and the endof the magazine tube, as shown in Fig. 10 and beginto pull back on the bolt handle as you insert the barrelin to the re ce ive r.

    ~ F ig . 1 0Continue pulling the bolt handle back while insertingthe barrel until the bolt is in its rear locked position andthe barrel is completely seated in the receiver. Thebarrel should mate to the receiver at this point in theassembly as shown in F ig. 11.

    There are two small tabs in the forend that w ill a lignwith the small cutout in the front end of the receiver.The forearm is in its proper position when it is seatedcompletely against and around the receiver as shown inFig. 13.

    Reattach the magazine cap to the magazine tube byrotating it in a clockwise direction until it is firm lyscrewed down against the forearm as shown in Fig. 14.

    The shotgun is now completely assembled. To closethe bolt/action, depress the action release button onthe left side of the receiver as shown in F ig. 15. Check,to be sure no fingers or other objects are located nearthe bolt as it closes. Put the safety in the "ON"position!

    LOADINGWhen loading, keep the safety on at all times and keepthe muzzle pointed in a safe direction..To load the magazine tube, turn the shotgun upsidedown and depress the action release button. This willa llow the cartridge lifter to move into the receiver well.Insert your cartridge and push it into the m agazinetube until it is held in place in the tube by the cartridgelatch. As you insert each cartridge you will hear a"click" that tells you the latch has closed behind thecartridge and you can now load the next shell. SeeFig. 16. The action release button should be held inwhile loading or it w ill have to be depressed after eachca rtrid ge is lo ad ed .

    Note: Your shotgun is equipped with a plug that lim itsthe number of cartridges that your magazine tube w illhold to 2 shells. Removal of the plug is shown in thism anual in the DISASSEM BLY section.To load a cartridge into the chamber, pull back on thebolt handle. As you pull the bolt handle fully rearward,a cartridge will come out of the magazine tube and thecartridge carrier w ill ra ise the shell a ligning it w ith thecham ber. Release the bolt handle and the forwardtravel of the bolt w ill chamber the first round. See Fig.17. Never allow your fingers or another object to comein contact w ith the trigger w hile loading.

    Your shotgun is now loaded and ready to fire if thesafety is m oved to the OFF position.To fire the shotgun, hold the shotgun firm ly with bothhands and the proper placement of the buttstock toyour shoulder and cheek. A im at your target. Press thesafety button into the OFF position and pull the trigger.The system that operates your sem i-auto will fire thecartridge in the chamber, eject the fired case and loadthe next cartridge into the chamber, each time that youpull the trigger. Be prepared to either fire your next shotor engage the safety in the ON position after firing.

    UNLOADINGBefore unloading, make sure the safety is in the ONposition. And keep the muzzle pointed in a safedirection. Never allow your fingers or another object tocome in contact w ith the trigger during unloading.Pull the bolt handle completely to the rear and this w ille ject any cartridge that is remaining in the chamber.C lose and open the bolt repeatedly to chamber andthen eject all cartridges that may be remaining in them agazine tube or cham ber.V isually check to make sure that no cartridges may beremaining in the chamber or magazine tube anddepress the bolt release button to close theaction/bolt.If you wish to unload the magazine without cycling thebolt repeatedly, turn the shotgun over, depress theaction release button, insert your finger into themagazine well and depress the interceptor latch. SeeFig 18. This will a llow cartridges remaining in the'magazine tube to bypass the latch and allow theremoval from the tube one at a time. Repeat thisprocedure until the m agazine tube is com pletelyempty.

    Interchangeable Choke TubesAll C harles Daly sem i-auto hunting type shotguns,ex cep t slug models, come w ith 3 interchangeableinternal choke tubes and a choke tube wrench. A llcom petition m odels com e w ith 3 interchangeableexternal choke tubes. You have the ability to modifyy ou r p atte rn d en sity b y in sta lling in te rc ha nge ab lechokes of different constrictions. See Fig. 19.+ . Fig. 19~ UYour VR-MC barrel is threaded for your choke tubes.For internal tubes, insert the wrench into the slottedportion of the tube and turn counterclockwise toremove it from the barrel and turn clockwise to installit. F ig. 20.For external tubes, simply grasp the knurled end of thetube and tw ist it off or on as necessary.

    WARNINGW hen installing a choke tube in your barrel. make sure that the tube iscompletely screwed down tight in the barrel. Never discharge yourshotgun without the choke tubes installed as this may damage thebarrel.     Choke Tube MarkingsYour internal interchangeable choke tubes are m arkedw ith notches at the end of the tubes to indicate thechoke type for that particular tube. Your external tubesare marked just below the knurled rim of the tube.P lease refer to the chart below to identify whichchokes are supplied w ith your shotgun. Chokes shownin the chart that are not supplied w ith your shotgun areavailable from our parts departm ent.

    DISASSEMBLYB efore disassem bling your shotgun, be absolutelycertain that it is unloaded. As an added precaution,visually check the chamber and the magazine tube forany cartridges. Put the safety in the on position.Pull the bolt handle to its full rearward position, lockingthe action open. Remove the magazine tube cap byunscrew ing it counter clockw ise, fig. 21.

    Remove the forearm by slid ing it away from thereceiver and off the end of the magazine tube, Fig. 22.Remove the barrel by pulling the barrel out of thereceiver assembly and out from around the magazinetube. Releasing the action may assist you in rem ovalof the barrel, see Fig. 23.

    You can remove the bolt handle by moving the actionbar rearward under spring tension with your left hand,until the bolt moves enough for you to align it w ith thecutout hole in the bolt that receives the handle. At thispoint, the bolt handle can be freely removed from thebolt. See fig. 27. Remember that the bolt is still undertension from the spring.

    S eparate the action bar from the action bar sleeve bypulling the action bar up and aw ay from the action barsleeve as show n in fig. 31.

    Once the retaining pins are removed, the entire triggergroup can be removed from the receiver by pullingdown on the trigger guard, fig. 33. No furtherdisassembly of the trigger group is recommended foranyone other than a trained gunsm ith.

    Note: W hen reinstalling the trigger group, the ham mermust be in its cocked position. To cock the hammer,pull down on the hammer w ith your thumb until itlocks into place as shown in fig. 34.

    Magazine Capacity Plug the retainer plug back intothe magazine tube. Becareful, as the spring willbe under tension. A lignthe cutout in the retainerplug with the detent onthe end of the magazinetube, push the plug intothe tube and rotate it in ac ou nte rc lo ckwis e d ire ctio napproximately '/4 turn, and slow ly allow the retainer toreturn to its stop. This w ill lock the retainer plug firm lyin the magazine tube, fig 37.

Y our statem ay not require th is p lug to be used so it m ay beremoved.When the barrel has been removed from the shotgun,insert a large bladed screwdriver into the hole in them agazine spring retainer, fig. 35.     Note: Your shotgun has now been com pletely disassem bled.No further disassembly of your shotgun is necessary forroutine maintenance and cleaning. Our service department ora competent gunsmith should only perform any furtherdisassembly.

    AMMUNITION CLEANING AND STORAGEEach Charles Daly sem i-auto shotgun is clearlymarked with the gauge and maximum length cartridgethat may be used in that particular model.

    Periodically, clean the bore with proper cleaningequipment. O il a ll metal surfaces lightly w ith highquality gun oil. Never pour oil into any insidemechanisms.

    Do not use a cartridge that is longer than themaximum cartridge length that is stamped onth e b arrel.

    If you w ill be storing your shotgun for long periods oftime, apply gun grease to all metal parts, store theshotgun in a dry, and secure area. When you clean theshotgun, make sure the muzzle is not plugged w ithany heavy grease that would cause a barrelobstruction.

    The use of reloaded or substandard com merciallyproduced am munition will affect your w arrantycoverage and could result in severe injury to theshooter or others nearby. See the enclosed warrantyregistration card for any exclusions and lim itations ofour wa rr an ty .
