The use of natural fibers has been increasing in recent decades due to their advantages such
as: abundance, biodegradability, low weight and regenerability compared to synthetic fibers.
This study and characterization of the composite of chicken feathers and polyester resin.
Chicken feathers are composed of 90% of proteins called keratins responsible for its rigidity
and strength. Currently in Brazil the feathers are mainly used as feed, but has a lower value.
Considering that the penalties are 5-7% of bird weight, this activity generated in 2009,
850,000 tons of chicken feathers. The unsaturated polyester resins are formed by a chain of
polyester obtained by condensation of diacids or anhydrides and saturated and unsaturated
glycols. The resin properties depend on the molar mass, functional groups, and unsaturated
bonds of the acid used, which are responsible for crosslinking. The composite was prepared
by mixing the feathers with the resin into a mold closed timber lined with plastic laminate
with internal dimensions of 29.2 x 29.2 x 3 mm. To evaluate mechanical properties were
performed tensile and bending. The samples were characterized by SEM. The analysis of the
fractures showed that the adhesion of feathers with the resin was satisfactory.
Key words: chicken feathers, polyester resin, composite.
