Wow! What a beautiful summer we had here in Newfoundland and Labrador! Definite-ly one for the record books!
It was a busy Summer for everyone, I’m sure! There have been a lot changes this year for our provincial coding team, as we’ve experienced one of the most significant change years since moving from ICD-9 to ICD-10-CA. Many of our non-coding members have also experienced similar changes in workflow and systems, as we, as HIM professionals, continue to be involved in many facets of the health care system.
Mid-September, I attended the CHIMA Chapter Advisory Council meetings as well as the CHIMA Conference in beautiful Niagara Falls. The conference theme was “DATA: A VITAL RESOURCE” and it was a very engaging and educational conference. See page 4 for more details.
Don’t forget to check out our latest educational offering, a presentation on “Stroke Care and Outcomes: Referral and Documentation Gaps” by Cassie Chisholm which is availa-ble for all members to view. It’s a great presentation with a lot of detail on Stroke Care, particularly in Newfoundland and Labrador, and members who register and complete the session will receive 1.5 CPE credits! We hope you all will take advantage of this and all the other great education sessions offered by all the CHIMA Chapters – it’s an easy way to ensure you get your required CPE credits!
The CHIMA NL Chapter Education Task Team remains busy with securing presenters for other education sessions so keep your eyes out for new sessions to come.
The CHIMA Chapter Advisory Council has rolled out a new Leadership Recruitment program so if you are interested in becoming a member of the CHIMA NL Chapter , visit the Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter section on the CHIMA website for more information: https://nl.echima.ca/home
I hope you all have a wonderful Fall!

2018 CHIMA Conference
I had the pleasure and honor of attending the 2018 CHIMA Confer-
ence in beautiful Niagara Falls, Ontario in mid-September, and what
a great conference it was!
The theme was, appropriately, “Data: A Vital Resource” and there
were some really wonderful and informative presenters, poster dis-
plays and vendors. The topics of the presentations ranged from
“Innovation and Collaboration, the Keys to a Healthier Health System
“ by CIHI and Canada Health Infoway, to “Advancing the Profession:
Supporting Health Care through HIM Specialization” by a panel of in-
dustry experts. We were treated to a very funny and engaging talk on
“The Technology Cannonball in the Information Governance Pool:
Technologies You Need to Know About!” by the very entertaining Seth
Johnson from Tennessee, as well as a great talk by the always ener-
getic and delightful Marci MacDonald, President, IFHIMA 2016-2019 .
This is just a highlight of the great sessions that were provided—if you
have any questions or would like to know more, please contact me and
I’d be glad to discuss.
One message that came through all presentations was how important
the HIM professionals are to quality health care, and how important it
is that we continue to invest in ourselves.
I would highly recommend any HIM professional attend one of these
conferences—they are a fantastic way to network, hear of new and ex-
citing innovations and meet some awesome HIM professionals from
across the country!
