December 2010
Mike Suydams 1959 Thunderbird
I bought my 1959 Thunderbird hardtop from 83 year old gentlemen in Northport in 1991 with only 39,225 miles on it.
The car was totally restored including engine and transmission. I also have pictures of the car in all stages of restora-
tion performed and original status maintained. The engine is a 352 V-8, automatic with whitewall tires, rear fender
skirts, new carpet and trunk liner kit. The car is a rare color, Cordovan, with a hickory tan leather interior, and pres-
ently it only has 43,300 miles on it. The car is for sale for $10,000, and it comes with extra front and rear fenders, ra-
diator and wheel rims.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO EVERYONE
OUR HOLIDAY PARTY IS SATURDAY JANUARY 8TH
@NOCELLOS OF NORTHPORT
First off I want to wish everyone a joyous holiday season. A Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, a Happy and Healthy New Year, and may all
your wishes have four wheels.
Holiday Party @ Nocellos Ristorante in Northport/Saturday Night January 8, 2011: We are back at Nocellos for our holiday party. From
the members that attended last year, everybody agreed that we all had a great time. Four piece band on site, and that means bring your dancing
shoes. Everything remains the same. Its $35.00 per person and the club will pay the tax and tip. There will be a cash bar, and you will have a
choice of six entrees. Coffee, soda, and desert are included.
Something new has been added. Everyone that attends will receive a gift from the club. The gifts have been ordered and will ready for distribu-
tion at the party. Not sure but I may have a sample for viewing at our next meeting. So go to page nine fill out our holiday party form, make
your check payable to Long Island Thunderbird Club and mail everything to me at 87 Ruth Street – Smithtown 11787
.2011 Club Calendar: In this issue of Bird Talk is our club listing of all our indoor and outdoor meetings, along with our event schedule. Some
of these dates and locations are not cast in stone. If you have an idea for an outdoor meeting, please call me with your suggestions. Remember
even at our age, change is good.
Club Badges: Only three left, and you guessed it. When there gone, there gone
.Dues are Due in December: Shortly you will be receiving our annual dues letter from Mr. Fleming. Please fill out the data sheet, and return
everything to him with your check for $29.00. There will be no increase in dues for 2011. For your convenience in replying a self addressed
envelope will be enclosed
New Advertiser/ Steve Linden: For those who where at our last meeting, you met Mr. Linden, and all that goes along with his program. He‟s
into many things that could, and would benefit you as long as you stay in this hobby. Appraisals, pre-purchase inspections, expert witness, con-
sulting, exporting, purchase and sales, and the man brings a lot to the table. If you would like one of his flyers, that gives you much more de-
scriptive information, call or e-mail me and I will mail you one.
Thank You from the VA in Northport: Just recently received a thank you letter from the VA in Northport. When we have the room will pub-
lish the letter in Bird Talk. Next years date is already listed in our event schedule for 2011
November 16th Meeting @ Bertucci’s: As Arte Johnson of Laugh In fame would say “A very interesting evening”. With over twenty members
in attendance, and of the twenty some odd, three new members signed up for 2011. Don‟t you love it when a plan comes together? It was a
Show and Tell night, with yours truly bringing my Marti Report, and telling the troops all about it. Peter DiSario talked about the painting of his
Thunderbird, and new member Maria Brennan won the 50/50. I also raffled off one of my Thunderbird books, and another new member Jerry
Langone won that.
Welcome Aboard: Maria Brennan, and her Rangoon red 65 hard top, Jerry Langone with his black 64 convertible, and Bert Nardiello who has
no Thunderbird, but likes our club. Remember you do need a Thunderbird to join our club.
A Time to Reflect: A pretty good year and we will close with eighty members in the bank. Another great Thunderbird Show at Syosset Ford,
and thank you Tom Healy of Turtle Wax who came through again. We thank him again and again. Mother Nature was kind to us in regard to
our outdoor meetings, not to many re-schedules. We put some money in the bank that makes us do some nice things for the membership. Art
Fleming replaced Rudy Bauer as our Editor in Chief. Art has done a great job, but I do miss Rudy, and his insight into our club, and hobby. The
good news is Rudy is doing better health wise, and hopefully we will get to see him soon. Since items mentioned are on the plus side, we do
need more participation by our membership. Ideas, suggestions, maybe add more people to the board. How about a tech guy to write or take
articles from publications like I did with the battery story, and in our annual dues letter, I eliminated the 2011 nomination ballot. Why you ask,
because everybody thinks I will be President forever. Forever is a long time. So if someone in our club would like to me, or Tony or any of the
other positions all you have to do is get in touch with me and you‟re in. Of coarse I‟m joking, and I will remain President as long as I‟m having
fun, and you want us.

Interesting Article in Hagerty’s Fall Newsletter/The Acid Test: Battery essentials every collector car owner should know, by Jonathan A
Stein. According to Benjamin Franklin, nothing is certain but death and taxes. In the car world the two certainties are tires and batteries. All
cars need tires and virtually every car needs at least one battery. Two types of batteries are commonly used in cars: lead acid (wet-flooded) and
AGM (absorbed glass mat). Lead plates are flooded with acid in a lead acid battery. They are relatively inexpensive but emit corrosive fumes
and can leak acid. AGM batteries consist of acid-impregnated matting between lead plates. Though permanently sealed (includes pressure
relief valves) with no risk of leakage (under normal operation), they can be very expensive. Both types of batteries offer similar cranking
power although some AGM batteries have a much longer life.
Most cars from the last 60 years use 12-volt batteries, but many earlier cars require 6-volt batteries, sometimes in pairs. Construction of both 6
- and 12- volt batteries are similar, although small 6-volt AGM‟s are not widely available.
One problem unique to collector cars is that they sit for long periods of time. Unless connected to a float charger, batteries gradually drain,
which according to Brain Turk of Axion Power Battery, isn‟t good for the health or life of the battery.Dolores Lane of Antique Auto battery
says that virtually any float charger can be used with lead acid battery, but they won‟t all work with all AGM batteries. Bruce Essig of ODYS-
SEY battery agrees. “AGM batteries need 13.6 volts instead of the 13.2 required by most traditional „wet flooded‟ batteries.” If a battery is
leaking, bulging, experiencing excessive terminal corrosion or won‟t hold a charge, its time to replace it.
There are several factors to consider when buying a battery, including cranking power, size and appearance. For power and no need for main-
tenance, David George of D.L. George Coachworks and Kent Bain of Automotive Restorations favor Optima batteries, especially when con-
cealed so that the non-original appearance isn‟t a problem. Equally effective options include AGM batteries from Axion Power or ODYSEY.
For that original-equipment look in a modern battery, most of the batteries from Antique Auto Battery use ODYSSEY batteries inside an au-
thentic-looking case. And when judges actually check, TurboStart by Axion Power offers lead acid batteries in original-style cases.Although
there are many discount battery sources, it‟s best to use a specialist to find the right battery based on how you use the car and its year, make
and model. But, because all batteries have a limited life, Tom Kobman of Restorations Battery has some great closing advice; “Don‟t buy the
battery until the restoration is done.”
