Electromagnetic Analysis in Workbench

WS01: Creating Winding Bodies from Line Bodies

• Workshop #1: Creating Winding Bodies from Line Bodies

• This workshop demonstrates how to create a sketch of a simple race track coil, convert it into a line body, and convert the line body into a winding body for use in an electromagnetic model.

• The objectives will be to calculate the field and coil self inductance.

• Click on the Sketching tab and choose Rectangle. Check the Auto Fillet box. Use the mouse cursor to make a freehand sketch of a racetrack coil. The first pick (step 3) will locate one corner. The second pick (step 4) will locate the corner diagonally opposite the first. The third pick (step 5) will size the fillets.

• Click on generate.

• Initiate the creation of a winding body from the newly created line body by changing the “Winding Body?” value to Yes.

• You will find that Design Modeler will NOT successfully create the winding body (note the red exclamation mark indicating that an error has occurred). Right click on the failed winding body to view the error:

• “Inconsistent direction or multiple junction in winding body”

• Fix this by reversing the direction of each of the 4 straight line segments. You must first activate line pick mode to do this. Pick on any straight line and change the value of reverse orientation to yes in Details.

• Once all 4 straight line orientations have been reversed, click on generate.

• Use the enclosure tool to create a spherical body of air surrounding the coil. Note that since this is an air coil and there are no solid bodies in the geometry, it is not necessary to set the value of “Merge Parts?” in Details to Yes.

• Click generate to create the spherical domain.

• Click on File => Save As… and save to racetrack.agdb

• The solution will take about a minute to complete.

• Click on Total Flux Density. You will see a contour of flux density on the exterior surface of the spherical enclosure.

• Click on the graphics button to view the flux density as vectors.

• The surface will be opaque, but this can be changed…
