  • Diversity

    ● Boys came from all different parts● Had little in common ● Luma made them all face adversity together by setting up a scrimmage with

the 17s● She wanted to know how they would do against a more challenging

competition and to see if they would give up or keep fighting ● Mandela, one of the best on the team, was angry that his friends weren't on

the team● Luma wanted to know how he acted without his friends on his team

  • Fornatee Tarpeh● Didn't show up at second tryouts or the first two practices ● Wanted to be on the team again when he heard about the scrimmage ● Still thinks he's on the team● Was going to talk to Coach Luma at the scrimmage● Luma said she would talk to him after the game was over● Didn't end up talking to him

  • The Scrimmage● 17’s had advantage - older and had more talent ● Luma knew the 15’s would lose but she wanted to see if they would give up to

the 17’s● 15’s started out strong but Muamer missed the first shot = Mandela yelled ● 17’s got a goal (1-0) but 15’s didn't give up, soon scored a goal (1-1)● Goal by Peshawa, 17’s up 2-1● Kanue (one of the 15’s) was dribbling the ball but one of the 17s tackled him ● Kanue lost his anger and slid with his cleats at the kid who tackled him● Luma saw this and told him to take a lap● Final score 3-2, 17’s won. ● Luma told them they played well● Threatened to kick Kanue off team

  • Fugees playing location ● Chaos on the field at Indian Creek● Dangerous crowd in the parking lot● Luma was tired of it● She didn't understand why the fugees couldn't play at Milam Park● It was much safer but the mayor said that it was a soccer free zone● She went to see the City Council

  • BURUNDI

  • The Fifteens Fight● “Mainly, the under 15’s hadn't quit when they fell behind. They wanted to win”

(St. John 161).● “But the 15s’ effort had been heartening. They had managed some clever

runs on offense, thanks to their newfound speed on the wings” (St. John 160).● “From the outset, the 15s displayed a new energy and determination, and

took control of the ball” (St. John 159).
