Lighting

• You need strong light on your subject and on your drawing surface.

• Position the light on the subject so it casts strong shadows.

• Position the light on the drawing surface on the opposite side from the hand with which you draw.

Charcoal Drawing Tools

• Soft vine charcoal

• Compressed charcoal in square sticks

• Kneaded eraser

• Paper stumps—small, medium, and large

• Chamois cloth

• Charcoal pencils, 4B, and 6B

• 18" × 24" newsprint pad, rough surface

• Matte-finish spray fixative
