draw in charcoal and in graphite pencil.• Discover how to pace yourself and step

back from your work in order to avoid burn-out.

Lighting

• You need strong light on your subject and on your drawing surface.

• Position the light on the subject so it casts strong shadows.

• Position the light on the drawing surface on the opposite side from the hand with which you draw.

Charcoal Drawing Tools

• Soft vine charcoal

• Compressed charcoal in square sticks

• Kneaded eraser

• Paper stumps—small, medium, and large

• Chamois cloth

• Charcoal pencils, 4B, and 6B

• 18" × 24" newsprint pad, rough surface

• Matte-finish spray fixative

Pencil Drawing Tools

• Graphite pencils: 2B, 4B, 6B, and ebony

• Kneaded eraser

• Pencil sharpener

• Paper stumps

• Pad of white 11" × 14" drawing paper, cold-press surface

• Matte-finish spray fixative

A Successful Drawing Session

• Pace yourself so you don’t run out of energy or time before your drawing is finished.

• Step back frequently to compare your drawing to the subject.

• Take a break!
