ClassificationGrouping Living Things
Classification: grouping things together using a set of rules
Grouping
• group by similarities and differences
• scientists classify to make things easier to find and share info
• all living things can be classified into one of five kingdoms
Kingdom
• Kingdom: the largest group into which living things can be classified– moneran: one celled and no nucleus - bacterium– protist: one celled and has a nucleus - paramecia– fungi: most are many celled, have a nuclei, look
like plants, but cannot make their own food - mushroom
– plants and animals make up the other two kingdoms - grass, flowers, cats, and dogs
Smaller Groups
• characteristics used to make smaller and smaller groups– each smaller group has a name– most specific group has only 1 type of
living thing
• name animals with labels of 2 smallest classification groups– genus - 2nd smallest group– species - smallest group
• two names combined - cat: felis domesticus
Summary• scientists organize living things to make
studying and discussing them easier
• all living things are classified into one of five kingdoms– moneran– protist– fungi– plants– animals
• five kingdoms divided into small groups
