    Indian railways is third largest rail network in

    the word(after Russia and china) under a singlemanagement.

    It is one of the world's largest commercial orutility employers, with more than 1.6 million

    employees No strike in last 35 years in spite of 1.6 million

    workers.

    It runs 12000 trains every day

    IR owns over 230,000 (freight) wagons,

    60,000 coaches and 9,000 locomotives.

    Indian Railways has more than64,015 kilometers of track and 7,083stations.

    It is overseen by the Ministry ofRailways of the Government of India.

    Currently managed by Ms. Mamata Banerjee.

    Railways were first introduced to India in 1853

    from Boribunder to Thane.

    The year of India's independence, there wereforty-two rail systems.

    In 1951 the systems were nationalised as oneunit, becoming one of the largest networks in

    the world. IR operates both long distance and suburban

    rail systems on a multi-gauge network of broad,metre and narrow gauges.

    Passenger :-

    Indian Railways operates about 9,000passenger trains and transports 20 millionpassengers daily across twenty-eight statesand two union territories. Sikkim andMeghalaya are the only states not connected

    by rail. Coaches are designed to accommodate

    anywhere from 18 to 108 passengers.

    Types of passengerservicesTrains are classified by their average speed. A faster train has fewer

    stops ("halts") than a slower one and usually caters to long-distancetravel.

    Multifunctional complex are being developed at

    50 railways stations serving places of

    pilgrimage, industry and tourist interest. Station premises will provide rail user facility

    like shopping , food stall and restaurant , bookstall PCO/STD/ISD/Fax booths etc.

    Real time train running information to

    passengers is proposed to be provided through

    Online coach indication display boards. Rail Sampark , has recently introduced SMS

    facility.

    The user can obtain information regarding PNRstatus, fare ,seat availability by sending SMS inspecific syntax's to 139

    networks to cater to commuters. Currently,

    suburban networks operate in Mumbai,Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi, Hyderabad,Ahmedabad, Pune and Lucknow-Kanpur.
