Four Doctrines that people disagreed with
1. DOCTRINE
• The belief that the wine and bread became the actual body and blood of Christ.– This is called transubstantiation
• The belief that you had to do works as well as faith for salvation
• Practice that put other works on equal footing with the Bible
• People had to confess sins to priests
2. Persecution
• Roman Church authorized the Inquisition– Church court set up to find and punish heretics
• Lying: $10-$25• Stealing: $15-$35• Disobeying your parents: $15-$45• Disrespecting elders or classmates: $25-$50
3. Corruption
• Pope Boniface VIII said everyone had to submit to the pope in order to be saved.
• There were three popes at one time• Sale of indulgences– Paper that granted pardon from the
punishment of sins– Pope Leo X needed money to finish
building St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome
4. Dissatisfaction of the People
• People had to express dissatisfaction behind closed doors
