13:1 Growth of Industrial Prosperity

• 2nd Industrial Revolution (late 1800’s)= rise in steel, chemicals, electricity, petroleum that led way to new industrial frontiers.

• Electricity gave rise to light bulb – Thomas Edison

• Transportation: street cars & subways• internal combustion engines• Wright Brothers by 1919 1st passenger air

• Why did Europe dominate the world economy by 1900?– b/c of its capital ($), industries, military might!

• “Communist Manifesto” – 1848 by Karl Marx & Friedrich Engels.– Marx’s Theory = working class would overthrow

middle class and form a – dictatorship ( gov’t in which a person has as absolute

power & organizes means of production, producing a classless society.
