• Library Service Providers play main role, in many countries and regions
• Mostly government funded organizations
• Libraries are usually forming a membership organization around a provider, with a Board
• Contracts with libraries are closed by the provider
• Cooperation with individual libraries in networks depends on compatibility with provider’s solution
Roles of national or regional library service providers/networks
CONFIDENTIAL FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY
CONFIDENTIAL FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY
Current metadata service solutions are at end of live
• E-revolution puts regional/national hubs in different (difficult ?) position
• Providers need new generation of global metadata infrastructure
• Request for more:
– effectiveness in combining system components
– flexibility connecting to services outside of libraries
Unmet Needs – Service Providers
CONFIDENTIAL FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY
Need for connection to global sources
Almost all providers are in need for global metadata services
• WorldCat is the global metadata source
Many providers in different countries are reflecting on the future
• Depending on integration with national infrastructures, WorldShare/WorldCat might be a viable solution
• In addition, the use of the WorldShare platform by a provider would allow easier WMS roll out to the respective libraries
WorldCat - WorldShare— Connection to the Global data-network Example of a Country Strategy
• Migration of National Infrastructure GII to WorldShare Platform including Discovery and Knowledge Base
• Agreement with UKB (11 University Libraries and National Library) to move tot WorldShare (13-2-2014)
• Further plans of other library segments (Public Libraries – Colleges – Special Libraries ) to migrate to the WorldsharePlatform
• First Migrations of local systems to WMS
Developments in the Netherlands
CONFIDENTIAL FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY
Transition of all UKB libraries (except TUE) to WorldShare Platform
“UKB’s move will serve as an example for other libraries and library consortia, not just in the Netherlands, but around the world. With UKB, we are in the early stages of an innovative journey, and together with these libraries, we will shape the transition to WorldShare ”.
Eric van Lubeek

Advice
CONFIDENTIAL FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY
RATIONALE UKB – WHY? UKB to WorldShare Platform
• End users work global and in the cloud
• Libraries wish to connect to global standards and practices
• Libraries wish to streamline back office processes
• Libraries want to use innovation capability of OCLC
Efficiency – Cost saving – Cooperation - Innovation
CONFIDENTIAL FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY
Rationale for transition to the Global WorldShare Platform
IMPACT – CHANGES NECESSARY UKB to WorldShare Platform
• Catologing rules (Pica+to Marc21 and RDA)
• Language of cataloging
• Authority file authors
• Special Collections
• Use WorldCat Knowledge base
• Scenarios connecting to local systems
• WorldShare ILL

Decisions to be made
• Data migration from GGC WC
• Data synchronization and update from WC GGC, local ILS’es)
• Application Profile for metadata management in WorldCat
CONFIDENTIAL FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY
Principles and regulations
1. Fuctional adaptions WorldShare ILL
2. User facility in the discovery layer
3. Impact analysis for not UKB-libraries
4. University libraries and NL will cataloge directly in WorldCat
CONFIDENTIAL FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY
From National (NCC) ILL to WorldShare ILL
WorldShare— Intelligent workflows
• Focus on countries where OCLC has a strong position and a direct representation (Germany, The Netherlands, UK)
• Focus on countries with promising market position and direct representation (France, Spain, Italy, Switzerland)
• Focus on countries with strong market position and strong partners (South Africa – Sabinet)
Our further plans in EMEA
CONFIDENTIAL FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY
• Develop and implement dedicated Country plans
• Working out product development – globalization and localization
• Focus on migrating existing ILS to WMS
• To date 7 live, 10 contracts signed in 6 different countries
Our further plans in EMEA

WMS in EMEA
CONFIDENTIAL FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY
• In Australia - 509 Amlib customers, we are migrating to WorldShare Management Services. To date 26 live or in implementation. 17 former Amlib, 9 new
• CBS-software supports the national data hub “Libraries Australia”. Connected to WorldCat
• VDX software supports national ILL/Document Delivery PLUS 3 statewide services for public libraries and 18 universities.
Our further plans in EMEA and Asia-Pacific
Australia & New Zealand
CONFIDENTIAL FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY
• Time investment required in understanding the library metadata landscape of each country.
• WorldCat needs to have strong regional connections – build solid regional partnerships
Our plans in Asia-Pacific
China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand
CONFIDENTIAL FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY
OCLC team is studying the metadata requirements with a Metadata Advisory Group
– Focus on global authorities and UNICODE
– To be worked out for different scripts and languages
– Prioritize scripts and languages
– Focus on EMEA now, but benefits for all regions
Continuing Globalization
CONFIDENTIAL FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY
• Reinforce partnerships in the region and build new ones
• Focus on countries with strong partners
• Further prioritization of countries
• Understand local requirements
• Respect regional and cultural diversity
…then start the journey
