LIFE Students AND Clickers . . .
We have a Faculty Survey on use of Clickers in the Classroom! We are interested in
HOW or IF you are using them. Thank you for completing the survey during your College
meeting on January 7, 2016
Note: Although you may encounter students in some classes who do not have clickers, you can require
the students to purchase them for your course if you are sure to include the Clicker Policy
Statement in your syllabus. Please contact the CETL for more details and to discover the best way
that you can incorporate them into your instruction.

“Chalkboard Sessions” Allow Faculty to Collaborate on Active Learning Integration
Greetings!
As the new quarter begins, I am excited to invite faculty at Life Uni-
versity to participate in a new series of ongoing interactive brain-
storming sessions designed to equip them to apply active learning
strategies in the classroom.
As I’ve begun to get to know individual faculty as well as division
chairs here at LIFE, one of the things I’ve heard more than once and
in different ways is, “Faculty are interested in active learning strate-
gies, but don’t always know how to apply those strategies in their
individual courses and lessons.” In other words, sometimes a new
active learning strategy sounds interesting and fun, but faculty have
difficulty imagining how they can use it in their classes.
So, this quarter the CETL is beginning to host a series of practical
discussions called “The Chalkboard Sessions.” Each session will
focus on ONE active learning theory. After a brief description of one
or two strategies which follow that theory, faculty will have the op-
portunity to brainstorm their value and work together to imagine
and create ways one of those strategies could work in one of their
classes.
What The Chalkboard Sessions aren’t:
Technical lectures on pedagogy or educational theory
Lengthy, passive presentations
What The Chalkboard Sessions are:
Creative discussion in which faculty can share their ideas, best-practices, and experiences
A series of relaxed practical conversations about understanding and applying active learning
Whether you’re a faculty member who has used active learning successfully or one who is struggling to find ways to apply it,
it’s my hope that The Chalkboard Sessions will be an enlightening and enjoyable interaction for you. Sessions begin this
quarter (see the schedule in this newsletter) and will be held during the lunch hour in the CETL (bring a sack-lunch!).
Thanks and see you there!

Director’s Corner: Opportunities in Teaching and Learning.
Happy Wintertime! Jason and Adam are ready for your visits to the CETL . . . Please Stop By CETL to say Hello!
I am very happy that we were able to send 10 people to Lilly Conference in Austin, TX during January
2016. This is a “new” opportunity provided by Todd Z for a team sponsorship. The next available Lilly Con-
ference in Austin is 2017. Please save the date and when the application arrives in your inbox, think about
taking advantage of the opportunity.
The Teaching Professor Conferences are available to attend, only by application to Faculty Development
Committee and dependent on available funds. Check with us on dates and times for 2016.
The Summit on Teaching and Learning at Kennesaw is no longer held in February. However, we will
provide opportunities for you to attend the Fall 2016 event as the organizers have agreed to hold the event
earlier and avoid conflicting of dates with our Fall CE!
Stay Tuned for more information including deadlines for applications as they become available. Dr. Kathryn Hoiriis

Explore Educational Technology Tools with The
EdSurge Product Index
By Adam Townsend
EdSurge is an online information resource for individuals interested in Educational Technolo-
gy. The EdSurge Product Index is a community-driven data base of educational technology re-
lated products that faculty and staff can use as a guide for discovering new educational technol-
ogy tools for classroom and online teaching/learning. Simply, a list of great tools for you to use.
Go to www.edsurge.com and click on “Product Reviews” at the top. Products are orga-
nized into a few different categories; Curriculum Products, Teacher Needs, School Operations,
Post-Secondary, and Everything Else. Choose the area that
you might be interested in.
I explored a bit and found an online application called
Smart Sparrow that allows instructors to create online
learning modules for students that increase engagement,
are self paced, and are targeted towards the students indi-
vidual needs. The product seems easy to use, is fairly cheap,
and might a good solution for instructors looking to rede-
sign their online learning platform or independent study
course.
For more information on Smart Sparrow, visit www.smartsparrow.com. To
explore EdSurge’s giant library of Educational Technology related products and
resources in the EdSurge Product Index, visit www.edsurge.com/product-
reviews.
