CREATING • CONNECTING • CONVERGINGWELCOMEWELCOME

I’d like to welcome you to the ADEA Fall 2009 Meetings in Dallas. As we come together, let’s take a moment to consider why we continue to converge, connect, and create during this annual tradition.

This year, nine groups will converge. We welcome: • ADAStudentAmbassadors • ADEAMinorityDentalFacultyDevelopmentProgram • ADEAAnnualSessionProgramCommittee • ADEAMeetingofAcademicDeans • ADEACouncilofFacultiesInterimMeeting • ADEACouncilofSectionsInterimMeeting • ADEACouncilofHospitalsandAdvancedEducation Programs Interim Meeting • ADEACouncilofStudents,Fellows, andResidents Interim Meeting • ADEASectionsonAdmissionsOfficersandStudent Affairs and Financial Aid Meeting

Even though each meeting has its own purpose and agenda, we’ll also gather as a whole to absorb new key information and insights that will affect us in our professional responsi-bilities. Such common ground allows us to connect within our role as members of ADEA.

Through the connections that we build and strengthen here, new opportunities arise to think “outside the box.” View-points from our colleagues and peers help prepare ourselves

and ADEA for the future of dental education. As we share in these connections, we are inspired to create.

Potential is created from these relationships and new lines of communication. In today’s high-paced, information-intense world, creating and seizing these possibilities helps you re-main at the forefront of dental education.

One of these opportunities is the ADEA Commission on Change and Innovation in Dental Education (ADEA CCI). I am excited about the plans and initiatives ADEA CCI has to improve dental education for the future. Their commitment to the development of our profession exemplifies converging, connecting, and creating, a perfect fit for the purpose of these meetings.

The synergy and excitement that will emerge from here is something we all look forward to. By grabbing the opportunities presented, we strengthen as a whole and contin-ue to blaze a bright path through the 21st century.

Ronald J. Hunt ADEA President

Members of the Millennial Generation are often known as “digital natives” because they grew up with technology and use it in ways that often boggle the minds of older generations, who have come to be known as “digital im-migrants.” Meet a group of dental students who have formed a “Digital Immigration Service” to help the digital im-migrants better understand how technology can be used for both educational and personal benefit.

5:00 - 6:00 p.m. Joint Plenary on Health Care Reform Grand Ballroom D/E CE credit: 1 Learning objectives: • ComparemethodsforeffectingchangetoreformtheU.S.healthcaresystem • Appraisewaystoensureoralhealthcareneedsaremet

From every indication, systemic reform of the U.S. health care system has become a national priority. President Barack Obama has included significant funding as a down payment for health care reform in his fiscal year 2010 budget plan and convened numerous town hall meetings across the country to highlight his ambitious health care reform agenda. At the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue the chairpersons of five key congressional committees are hammering out the elements of health care reform legislation and have committed to a timetable for passage of separate health care reform bills in the House and Senate. Governors, policymakers, economists, church leaders and major stakeholders, in-cluding large and small businesses, insurers, and societies of health professionals - some of whom had been vehemently opposed to health care reform in the 1990s - have all joined the consensus for broad-based health care reform.

Given the diversity among stakeholders with legitimate interests in tackling the major stumbling blocks of reform, i.e., access, quality and cost, there is no easy consensus about how best to reform the health care system. But, the debate in search of that consensus has begun. ADEA has not espoused any particular model for reform nor endorsed any specific proposal, though we do judge that reform should be built on the current public-private health care system. We do not support a single payer system, but do believe that government, as one of many stakeholders in the health care system, has a role to play; the challenge facing reformers is to determine what that role is.

To ensure that the oral health needs of all Americans are met, ADEA believes that any comprehensive reform of the U.S. health care system should provide universal coverage to all Americans and access to affordable diagnostic, pre-ventive, restorative, and primary oral health care services so as to eliminate pain, suffering, and infection.

Presenter: Ronald J. Hunt, D.D.S., M.S., Dean, Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry, ADEA President

Future dental graduates will experience much scientific discovery that will significantly alter the way they practice. The visionary mission of the ADEA Commission on Change and Innovation in Dental Education (ADEA CCI) is to build consensus on future educational needs and lead change toward dental curricula that better prepares graduates for this undiscovered future. ADEA President and ADEA CCI member Ron Hunt will illustrate ways the commission is ad-vocating for curriculum enhancement and policy improvement. He will describe the commission’s key initiatives and outline important and timely educational resources created for ADEA members to use at their institutions to shape dental education for the future.

The diverse panel will include faculty who are on clinical or research tracks, tenured and non-tenured, and have ben-efited from fellowships and leadership programs; those who always knew they wanted to be dental educators; and those who never imagined they would be.

Student moderators will report findings of a survey measuring student attitudes toward faculty careers. The modera-tors will ask the panel questions based on results of the survey. The audience will be able to ask questions and make comments as well as respond to questions via the electronic Audience Response System.

Welcome to Dallas!Dallas' new slogan is "Live Large, Think Big," describing a city built on big dreams, freshly blazed trails, and an at-titude that all things are possible. It’s the perfect backdrop for the ADEA Fall 2009 Meetings.

There are many excellent places in the area to unwind and relax after a day of discussion and networking with your colleagues. The Hilton Anatole offers several restaurants to enjoy if you do not wish to leave the complex; for those willing to try some Dallas cuisine, we have some recommendations for you that are only a short taxicab ride away.

While there are over 20 taxi companies available in Dallas, the Hilton Anatole recommends the Yellow Checker Cab Company (214-426-6262). Cabs are available at the hotel 24 hours a day; simply ask a doorman to call one up to the front drive. For your return trip, note that the Hilton Anatole’s address is 2201 Stemmons Freeway.

Please note that for groups of four or larger, reservations are strongly recommended for all restaurants in the hotel and in Dallas. Please contact the Hotel Concierge at x7515 for assistance or to make reservations.

Gossip Bar [$$-$$$]

The chic new Gossip Bar serves up fresh pastries and Starbucks in the morning, followed by specialty martinis and premium wines at night.

La Esquina Restaurant [$$]
