2016 ADEA Distinguished Service AwardRONALD L. RUPP, D.M.D.American Dental Education Association

Ronald L. Rupp, D.M.D., joined ADEA in June 2008 and served as the Senior Vice President for External Relations and Institutional Advancement until his retirement at the end of 2015. He executed ADEA’s industry relations strategy, developed and nurtured ADEA’s corporate partnerships and represented ADEA to key partners in the allied, predoctoral and advanced dental education communities.

Dr. Rupp’s varied career spans more than 37 years in clinical dentistry, corporate professional relations and professional health care communications. After graduating with a D.M.D. in 1976 from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, he practiced general dentistry for 18 years with five other dentists in Northern New Jersey.

Prior to joining ADEA, Dr. Rupp spent 10 years directing the North American corporate professional relations for GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Consumer Healthcare. In this position, he served as an internal scientific and clinical consultant on dental professional matters and managed corporate institutional support budgets and corporate continuing dental education services.

While at GSK, Dr. Rupp helped establish ADEA/GSK programs that enhanced dental education by creating scholarships for students and educators. These programs included the ADEA/GSK/National Dental Association Dr. Jeanne C. Sinkford Scholar in the ADEA Leadership Institute and the ADEA/GSK Dental Hygiene Fellowship Program. He also played an integral role in creating the ADEA/GSK Oral Health for Independent Older Adults Predoctoral Curriculum project. After serving on the ADEA Corporate Council Administrative Board from 2003–2007, Dr. Rupp was elected to serve as the ADEA Vice President for the Corporate Council.

During Dr. Rupp’s tenure at ADEA, he grew the ADEA Corporate Council from approximately 35 to 68 members. With his experience in the corporate environment and broad knowledge in forming strategic alliances, Dr. Rupp substantially increased the overall sponsorship funding that supports ADEA’s efforts to further advance excellence in dental and allied dental education. Of particular importance, he was instrumental in creating five named fellowships in the ADEA Leadership Institute and developing the ADEA Guidelines for Academia-Industry Interactions.

Dr. Rupp is a member of the American Dental Association, the American Association for Dental Research, the American Academy of Oral Medicine, the American Academy of Periodontology and the National Dental Association. In addition, he has served on the Board of Directors of the Academy of General Dentistry Foundation.

He and his wife, Joanne, live in New Jersey. Their children and grandchildren live in Colorado and Wisconsin.
