Current & Past Honours Projects

15 honours projects have been run over the past four years

• Single Crystal Chromatographic Analysis of RDX• Host-Guest Complexes Incorporating NTO• AFM Study of RDX/DNAN Melt-Cast Explosives• Evaluation and Synthesis of 1,2-dioxines as Energetic Materials• Explosive Porous Silicon• New Methods for the Analysis of Infrared Countermeasures• Composite Energetic Materials Formed by Molecular Inclusion

Host-Guest Complexes Incorporating NTOSupervisors: Prof. Kevin Wainwright (Flinders) and Dr. Phil Davies & Mr.

Matt Smith (DSTO)

• Produce the host-guest complex incorporating NTO

• Decrease sensitivity• Increase performance• Alter the pathway to synthesise a

family of compounds

Overlayed chromatographs of Type 2 RDX with UV Detection at 235 nm

Aim: Determine how HMX exists in the RDX crystal structure and the relative quantity of the HMX in the RDX crystal

AFM Study of RDX/DNAN Melt-Cast ExplosivesProf. Joe Shapter (Flinders) and Dr. Phil Davies (DSTO)

• The incorporation of RDX into DNAN is causing the surface to be modified due to the heat used in manufacture

• The surface roughness is decreasing due to the sharp points and edges melting due to concentration of heat buildup at points and edges
