DESCRIPTION
An award winning entry for Designing Hong Kong’s Central Waterfront Design Competition, this proposal aims to bring the city to the harbour, and the harbour to the city. Through the development of a low rise, mixed use urban quarter with spatially well defined pedestrian spaces, the design pays particular attention to land-marine interface. A sustainable transport and pedestrian friendly network, provides linkages to the hinterland and to the diverse activity nodes along the waterfront promenade with water access, in order to create a truly great destination for Hong Kong that caters for locals and tourists alike.Some of the key urban design and placemaking principles underpinning our concept include Quality of Life, Cultural Continuity, Urban Identity, Landscaped Cityscape, Animated Edge, Improved Accessibility and Financial Viability. The proposal envisions an “Emerald Necklace” that stretches from Central Ferry Piers to the HKCEC, linking four distinct clusters; Gateway & Transport Cluster, Heritage & Culture Cluster, Government & Civic Cluster and the Ecological & Events Cluster. These activity nodes incorporate features such as the reinstated Queen’s Pier and restored Star Ferry Clock Tower at the inner harbour, the Statue Square Esplanade, Tamar Civic Plaza and the landscaped eco-park near HKCEC providing pedestrian linkages from the hinterland to the waterfront with the promenade and Harbour Boulevard providing east west connectivity.*Joint Submission with RTKL International Limited, in association with RDCTRANSCRIPT
