Featured InstructorChris De FirmianChris is a European trained woodworker who studied and apprenticed in Italy where he learned traditional furniture making. Pursuing his love of the ocean and sailboats he spent 25 years building yacht furniture in the Santa Barbara harbor. After building boats with groups of young people he discovered a passion for teaching and has spent the last seven years developing a hands-on approach to academics through project-based learning. Through the woodworking projects that he teaches students learn History, Science, Math, and Art all while developing their woodworking skills. Chris has lived in San Luis Obispo for five years with his wife, daughter, and their golden retriever.

Electric Cigar Box Guitar Building8 Tue: Sep 5 – Oct 24, 6:30-8:30pm

An iconic early American instrument, the cigar box guitar has been instrumental in the development of Blues and Rock music. Students will build an electric slide guitar using a wooden cigar box for the body. To build these traditional blues style guitars students will glue-up, shape, drill, and layout the neck, followed by fitting the neck, pick-ups, and sound holes to the cigar box body. Students will finish the class by installing strings and learning how to play a blues progression on their new guitars (See page 5 for details).

The Physics of Music – Building Cell Phone Amplifiers8 Thu: Sep 7 – Oct 26, 6:30-8:30pm

Explore the physics of sound and music by building acoustic cell phone amplifiers. Students will each build four different sound chamber shapes using a variety of hard and soft woods to gain an understanding of how to passively amplify and enhance the audio coming from their cell phone speaker. Projects will include a sound tube, a cone shaped chamber, an exponential chamber, and a resonating chamber. Experimentation with dimensions, materials, and shapes will be encouraged for a final project (See page 5 for details).
