    J

ill and Kevin Mittan remain in the midst

    of a mid-life crisis.

    And thats okay.

Their crazy dream of having a winery the Midlife Crisis Winery while holding

down day jobs in the post-production field of

the entertainment industry a couple of

hundred miles away continues to thrive.

They are moving forward with plans for

their own winery building and a sustainably

farmed vineyard which the couple has

    named Crisis Solved Vineyard.

We want to make full use of wind power

and solar power and also want to use grey

water, said Jill Mittan. Sustainable farming

and energy use, she noted, makes botheconomic and environmental sense over the

    long term.

In the meantime, Midlife Crisis Winery

continues to cultivate its customer base

through its downtown Paso Robles tasting

room, which is now open daily. And the

Mittans continue commuting on the week-

ends to Paso Robles and various tasting events

    around California.

The odometers on the couples vehicles are

a testament to their well-traveled lifestyle. Jills

Subaru Forrester has racked up about

182,000 miles, while Kevin has logged more

than 260,000 miles on his GMC Sierra truck.

Their two Australian shepherds, Sydney and

Roo Boy, are seasoned travelers. All the traveling and their non-stop

schedule is worth it, said Jill.

Making wine is re-energizing, she said,

because its so different from what we do in

our careers. Its grounded and real and at the

end of the day theres this product and you

can say, We made this and people enjoy it.

    That is cool.

Midlife Crisis Winery went from dream to

    reality in 2004. During a three-month period,

the couple sold their house in Los Angeles

(during the real estate boom) and found asmaller residence, purchased about 22 acres

in Paso Robles and became a bonded winery.

While starting the winery was a leap of

faith, the Mittans had already developed a

solid track record as winemakers. They have

studied at UC Davis and trained with a

commercial winemaker for years in Southern

    California, where as amateur winemakers

they garnered more than 60 regional and

    international awards.

Much of the fruit they used in their gar

winery came from Paso Robles. When th

decided to start a commercial winery, th

respect for the grapes grown in the P

Robles region led them to look for prope

    there. Jills winemaking inspiration stretc

back to her childhood, growing up in

    Irish-Italian neighborhood of Ohio. There

watched some of the older Italian men m

wine using traditional Old World grapes t

they either grew in their yards, or managed

    get their hands on.

Those Italian winemaking roots live on

the Midlife Crisis Winery, where varie

such as Sangiovese, Barbera, Pinot Gri

and, more recently, Nebbiolo, are among

eclectic mix that also includes Rhone aBordeaux grapes. They make a couple

sparkling wines and a dry ros.

I like to make wines that are very fo

    friendly, said Jill.

The fruit-forward style of Midlife Cr

also includes a robust blend bottled under

label Roo Boy Red. Its made using Pe

Sirah, Merlot and Tempranillo. Jill Mitt

experience with the Old World-style Pi

Grigio also influences how its made at Mid

    7/40

Crisis, with oak added to give it a

    more rounded mouth-feel with a

    long, creamy finish. Again, said

    Mittan, its a more food-friendly

    version of the wine.

    Growing the winery remains

part of the Mittans future plans,

although it will be gradual. Forone thing, Kevin and Jill remain

the winerys only staff, serving as

    the winemakers, cellar workers,

    bottling line and sales and

    marketing department. (They do

    have a tasting room manager

    holding down the fort.)

    Their initial vintage, 2004,

    produced 800 cases. Since then,

    theyve steadily increased to

    1,500 in 2005, 2,200 in 2006

    and about 3,000 in 2007.

Midlife Crisis is one of about a

    dozen wineries with tasting

    rooms in downtown Paso Robles,

    which is generating a generous

amount of buzz nationally for its

    combination of top-notch wine

    tasting options along with cutting

    edge restaurants all within

    comfortable walking distance. A

recent issue of Bon Apetit maga-

zine even named Paso Robles one

of that nations top small towns

    for foodies.

As for the winerys name, the

inspiration came from an email in

    which Jills brother, responding to

the news the couple was starting

    a winery, wrote: Wouldnt a

    sports car have been cheaper.

A sports car being the symbol

of a mid-life crisis, the connection

was made and a name was born.

And now visitors to the Midlife

    Crisis tasting room will find

stickers with sports cars on themand stress balls shaped like a little

red sports car. The tasting room

can be found about a block from

    Paso Robles downtown park

plaza, at the corner of Pine and

13th streets. It is open from 10:30

a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. You can also

visit the winerys new website at

    www.midlifecrisiswinery.com, or

    call at (805) 237-8730.

SLO County Sitters: An Answer to an Age-Old Problemby Mark Storer

While it has become rather common tosee young or newly married couples

making the rounds of the Central Coast

Wine Country, the fact is, childless folks are

still the minority among wine drinkers in

America. That means that a lot of people

who want to experience the joys of a day of

wine tasting or a night out in Wine Country

have to make arrangements to leave the

kids at home, with a relative willing to help

out or a babysitter, right? Well, not

    anymore.

Enter Tina Porter to the Central Coastwine scene. A true entrepreneur, Porter

became aware of a need that wasnt being

filled and so she began to do her research to

find out how to fill it. The result is SLO

    County Sitters Incorporated.

My husband and I travel quite a bit and

    I have a one-year-old daughter and a three-

year-old daughter and I saw in other places

what we didnt have on the Central Coast

a qualified nanny and sitter service like you

find in Europe and other places, saysPorter.

SLO County Sitters isnt just a group of

people who will come to your hotel and

watch your children, either. We screen

everyone who works for us rigorously, says

    Porter. I have a pre-school teacher who

works for me who says her school didnt

screen her this well. Indeed, all of Porters

sitters and nannies are folks with back-

grounds in childcare. We dont just come

and watch the kids. We provide age-appro-

priate activities and educational games andwe never rely on the television to baby-sit

    the kids, says Porter.

SLO County Sitters opened for business

in December of 2007, but already they are

well-known on the Central Coast. From

Santa Maria to Cambria, from Paso Robles

to San Luis Obispo, SLO County Sitters

    provides age-appropriate and professional

childcare for anyone on the coast wheth

tourists or residents. I had one custom

who was staying at the Cambria PiLodge on business and he found us in t

directory there, says Porter. So, he cal

his wife up in the Bay Area and told her

pack the kids and bring them down.

called us and he was able to turn a busin

trip into a vacation for the whole famil

    she adds.

Now, its possible to have the best

both worlds, Porter says. The kids do

have to be dragged along to dinner or w

tasting against their will and parents knthat the kids arent just sitting in the ho

    room watching television. Well provide

kinds of activities including taking kids

the beach or whatever the parents wan

    says Porter.

    12/40

SIX-SPICE BEEF SHORT RIBS 1 tablespoon dried porcini mushrooms (mixed is OK too)

    1-1/2 teaspoons black peppercorns

    1 teaspoon kosher salt

    1-1/2 teaspoons ground coriander

    1-1/2 teaspoons powdered ginger

    1-1/2 teaspoons smoked sweet paprika

    1/2 teaspoon ground cloves

5 pounds beef short ribs, 1 inch thick, boned and trimmed of excess fat

    2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

    1 medium onion, thinly sliced

    1 large carrot, thinly sliced

2 inner celery ribs, thinly sliced

    2 garlic cloves, thickly sliced

2 cups dry red wine, such as the Anglim 2005 Best Barrel Blend

2 cups beef stock or low-sodium broth

    1/4 cup sugar

Preheat the oven to 300. In a spice grinder (a clean coffee grinder

will do, too), pulse mushrooms, peppercorns and salt to a fine

powder. Add the coriander, ginger, paprika and cloves and pulse to

combine. Rub the spice blend all over the beef short ribs.

Heat the oil in a large skillet. Add the short ribs and brown over

    moderate heat, about 12 minutes.

Scatter the onion, carrot, celery and garlic in a medium roasting panSet the short ribs on top, cover tightly with foil and roast for about

    2-1/2 hours, until tender.

Meanwhile, pour off the fat in the skillet and return it to high heat.

Add the wine, stock and sugar and bring to a boil, scraping up any

bits from the bottom of the pan. Simmer over moderately high heatuntil reduced to1 cup, about 15 minutes. Transfer the glaze to a heatproof cup.

Preheat the broiler. Transfer the short ribs to a plate and pour the

pan juices and vegetables into a bowl. Skim off all of the fat. Transfe

the pan juices and vegetables to a blender. Add 1/2 cup of the glaze

and puree the pan sauce until very smooth.

Return the short ribs to the roasting pan and brush with 1/4 cup ofthe glaze. Broil 8 inches from the heat for about 3 minutes, until

caramelized and sizzling. Turn the ribs and repeat the process with

the remaining 1/4 cup of glaze. Serve the ribs with the pan sauce.

MAKE AHEADThe short ribs can be prepared through Step 3 and refrigerated

    overnight. Broil just before serving.

As autumn wanes and winter approaches, we start to crave rich,

hearty foods and fuller wines to accompany them. One of Steve and

Steffanie Anglims favorites is beef short ribs; they are relatively easy to

prepare, and will satisfy both elegant dinner-party guests and hungry

four-year-olds. Steve Anglim borrowed this recipe from one published inFood & Wine (April 2008) by Shea Gallante from Promiscuous Food:

Recipes that Pair with Many Wines, to pair with his 2005 Best Barrel

Blend. This Rhne red blend comprised of 45% Mourvdre, 45% Syrah,

and 10% Grenache has a very rich, earthy character that beautifully

compliments the succulent spice of the beef. Steve serves these ribs

with plenty of pan sauce and chunks of bread for capturing every deli-

cious drop. If they are lucky enough to have leftovers, the Anglims shred

some of the beef and add corn tortillas and hot sauce for a mid-week

    feast.

Located downtown in Paso Robles 120-year-old train depot, Anglim

is a small, family-owned label producing vineyard-designate Rhne vari-

etals and blends plus limited-release family favorites including Pinot

Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. Winemaker Steve Anglim realizes that

stellar wines begin in the vineyard, and is passionate about sourcing the

finest fruit for Anglim wines. Anglim hand-crafts about 4,000 cases per

year, striving for a balanced style, with enough character to be cellared

but enough elegance to be enjoyed now. Visit Anglim at 740 Pine Street,

Paso Robles, CA 93446. Tasting hours are Thursday through Monday

from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. except Sunday, noon to 6 p.m., and by appoint-

ment or chance. For more information, call (805) 227-6813 or visit the

Sometimes a place just fits. You know it by looking at it, you know assoon as walk up the path and in the door that this is a spot that simplybelongs right where it is, doing exactly what it is doing. That, in a word or

two, would describe the Cambria restaurant known fondly and to many as Robins Restaurant.

Located in a charming and nicely weathered old home in this historicseaside town, they offer an eclectic menu that has pleased locals and visi-tors since they opened their doors in 1985. The interior (with its fireplace)and the spacious, multi-leveled heated deck surrounded by flowers andvines are a bit eclectic as well, and it all blends together to match thesetting, just as owner Shanny Covey intended it to be: warm, informal, comfortable and unique. And it should be noted that those gardens are theperfect setting for a small reception.

So how to define eclectic when it comes to menus? Well, how about

Thursday Night Sushi Night. Or lobster enchiladas, Tandoori chicsalmon bisque, Vietnamese lumpia, Malaysian green curry, pork osso band a juicy Angus beef burger with white cheddar and grilled sw

onions. All on the same menu. Then theres the monthly Prix Fixe Dinon the second Friday of each month that feature different flavors faround the world. If that is not what eclectic means, then we are looat different dictionaries. But, it all somehow works, and wonderfully s

Then there is the extensive wine list, which while pretty straightward also has more than a few surprises. All of which makes a visit to charming part of the coast an even more enjoyable journey.

    SCULPTERRA WINERYO

pened to the public just one year ago,

    Sculpterra Winery and Sculpture Garden

has made an indelible mark in Paso Robles

Wine Country, fusing art, wine and the earth

together in an inspiring winescape. The one

year anniversary celebration held during the Paso

Robles Harvest Festival on October 17-18, 2008,

treated guests to an evening of highly accoladed

wines and a serene live acoustic musical tour

through the gently lit sculpture garden. The

musical performance at the last sculpture at the

end of the evenings tour was highlighted by a

bright falling star streaming across the starlit sky

above. It was this type of Wine Country experi-

ence that owner Dr. Warren Frankel had envi-

sioned many years ago when he planted the first

Cabernet Sauvignon vines on his 120 acre Frankel

Family Estate Vineyards.Dr. Frankels love for sculpture began more than forty years ago

while spending a summer traveling Europe as an eighteen-year-old

college student. While hitchhiking from Bergen Norway the fjords to

Oslo, he stumbled upon Frogner Park, which exhibited the complete

ife collection of sculptor Gustav Vigeland. The large, beautiful

outdoor sculptures captivated him. Many years later, Dr. Frankel met

John Jagger, a renowned sculptor. Dr. Frankel discussed with John

winery and vineyards. To the delight of Dr. Frankel, John agreed to

Emulating the festive occasion established by vignerons in the

Beaujolais region of France, Adelaida Cellars presents its Annual Beau-

jolais Nouveau Celebration at 6 p.m., Friday, November 21, to salute

the first release of the 2008 Central Coast vintage. Chef Claude Chaz-alon of Safran Caterer will prepare traditional French peasant fare to

accompany Adelaidas 2008 Gamay Noir. The cost is $25 per person

or complimentary to all wine club members. Reservations are required

    via 1-800-676-1232 x19 or www.adelaida.com.

Last years Beaujolais Nouveau Celebration was completely sold out

when more than 100 guests dined on Chef Chazalons traditional

coq au vin and the 2007 Gamay Noir. This year, he will be serving

duck and pork cassoulet accompanied by a salad and dessert.

As in France, Adelaidas Beaujolais Nouveau is made from the

Gamay Noir grape (precisely Gamay Noir Jus Blanc). Unlike most

red wines, Beaujolais Nouveau is intended for immediate consump-

tion and thus, is fermented and then bottled without barrel or bottle

    aging prior to release.

Our Gamay Noir was made according to the traditional Beaujolais

model of macration carbonique where whole grape clusters are

fermented without crushing, said Winemaker Terry Culton. Yeast

penetrates the skins so that each grape functions like a micro-

fermenter. The result is a fruit-forward wine with vivid aromas.

Grapes for Adelaidas 2008 Gamay Noir were harvested September 2

from the winerys HMR Estate Vineyard in west side Paso Robles. One

acre of Gamay Noir was planted in 1964 on what was then called

Hoffman Mountain Ranch. The historic vineyard also boasts the oldest

Pinot Noir vines along the South Central Coast. The Old World Beaujolais Nouveau celebration is officially

launched at midnight on Beaujolais Nouveau Day, the third Thursday

    of November.

    About Claude Chazalon

One of the most popular chefs in Paso Robles, Claude Chazalon

owned several restaurants in Paris, France before he and his wife

Chrystel opened Paris, a Paso Robles eatery with the ambiance and

menu of a French bistro. They closed its doors after business in down-

town Paso Robles was severely disrupted by the 6.5-magnitude San

Simeon quake of December 2003, and subsequently founded Saf

    Caterer.

    About Adelaida Cellars

Situated 14 miles from the Pacific Ocean at nearly 2,000 feeelevation, Adelaida Cellars is one of the most respected wineries al

Californias central coast. The award-winning Cabernet Sauvign

Pinot Noir, Syrah and Rhne varietals of this family owned and op

The name Jerry Lohr is nearly synony-

mous with the Paso Robles wine

industry. He has been at the wine game

over 30 years and in that time has helped

place Paso Robles and Monterey counties

squarely on the world wine map. Originally

from South Dakota roots, Jerry opened his

first wine center in 1974 in San Jose, a time

when wine didnt hold the cach it does now.

Understanding the viability of the growing

regions in San Luis Obispo County, he

opened a second wine center in Paso Robles

in 2001. The success of both tasting rooms,

reflecting the different geographic regions, is a

testament to Lohrs ability to envision the

    future of Paso Robles.

We focus on flavor from vineyard to

    bottle, says winemaker Jeff Meier.

The tasting room features an incredible

diversity of wines including the limited

production J. Lohr Vineyard Series. These are

    wines comprised of Cabernet Sauvignon,

Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and other standard

varietals. The J. Lohr Estates are widely avail-

able wines and include their popular, ifunusual, Valdigui, a light, simple red wine

similar to Gamay. Valdigui is a red wine with

training wheels, Meier says. Its suited to a

nouveau style of red wine, sort of like Beaujo-

lais on steroids. Its a novelty, but it sells well,

and we even have international distribution.

They produce approximately 14,000 cases of

Valdigui. The Cypress Vineyards label aims

for everyday drinkability and include Sauvi-

gnon Blanc, Merlot and White Zinfandel.

The tasting room, located near the airport

is open, spacious and bright, with exposed

wood trusses and mottled stained concrete

floors. The homey, schoolhouse feel welcomes

guests and is a decidedly unintimidating

place. The array of wines offered is vast and

available at a variety of price points. Gift items

like silk clothing, tampanades and preserves

from a local caterer are available for purchase.

    J. Lohr also has a vast selection of high-end

cookbooks from well known restaurants like

    the French Laundry and Bouchon

    numerous fun, everyday cookbooks

There is a new resident at Old

    Edna, the 100-year-old historic

cluster at the heart of San Luis

    Obispo Wine Country. Zoey

    Schrage and Nancy Elmore have

    brought their exquisite taste and

eye for the extraordinary to their

    newest venture, Zoeys at Old

    Edna & Antiques from Memory

Lane. The store, housed in the

    historic tin-sided building facing

Highway 227, is far more than

    antiques, with a complementary

    collection of unique contempo-

rary and retro items, it is the

perfect stop to complete yourholiday shopping list.

    Zoeys offers the expected:

    antique furniture that runs the

    gamut from Victorian to Shabby

    Chic; bejeweled broaches, both

new and old; rare and collectible

    pottery and Bakelite pieces as

    well as the unexpected: hand-

    made soaps infused with local

olive oils, retro aprons and tea

    towels, fun and funky reading

glasses and artisan products foraround the house. And for wine

    lovers, theres wine soap, wine

    bubble bath and more.

We try to have a little of

    everything the antiques, the

retro stuff and the funky stuff,

    explains Zoey. You cant walk

    through without seeing some-

thing that grabs you or reminds

you of some piece of your life

a person, a moment and thatswhat makes it so much fun.

    Between now and the holi-

days, Zoeys at Old Edna &

    Antiques from Memory Lane

    invites shoppers to explore their

    truly unique gift collection.

    brate the 100-year anniversary

of the Old Edna Township with

20% off the entire store the day,

    shopping list and December 26

    will launch the much anticipated

    After Christmas Sale.

When you come out to this

    site, youre just transported, says

Zoey. Its the scenery, the great

food, the ambiance of the valley,
