Spanish heat and gypsy passion are brought to life in Bizet's most memorable opera – Carmen. This smouldering femme fatale is one of the most captivating heroines in opera and obsession turns deadly when her gypsy seductions ensnare a love-struck soldier and a swaggering toreador. A riveting drama of love and jealousy, Bizet's Carmen is fi lled with alluring melodies and captivating dances and is rightly one of the world's most popular operas.

Welcome to the Central Coast Conservatorium 2015 concert season. Again the Conservatorium will present another wonderfully varied program of genres in our 2015 Professional Concert Series. In 2015 we have incorporated a number of changes that I hope will benefit our regular concert-goers but also encourage a new generation of music lovers on the Coast. This year the concert season is divided in two with this first calendar detailing the events for the first half of the year and the subsequent calendar highlighting the program for the second half of the year.

I believe music is a social artform that should inspire and bring our entire community together. The addition of evening concerts to this year’s Concert Series on Friday and Saturday nights will enable a new mix of audience members to participate in our program and importantly bolster the social aspect of music performance and appreciation. It is my hope that through the creation of these evening events we can help develop the concept of a great night out for our community.

Central Coast Conservatorium’s 2015 Concert Series is vast and varied and certainly offers our audience enjoyment and insight across many genres and ensemble combinations. There is certainly something for everyone and more. Again this season we feature international, national and local artists and importantly, our student population, the artists of the future.

It gives me great pleasure to invite you, your family and friends to the Central Coast Conservatorium and its associated venues throughout the year to experience these wonderful performances. Again, I encourage you to challenge your musical palate, by attending concerts outside your comfort zone. Variety is the spice of life, and music is truly an aural feast. I hope you share as much delight in these concerts as I will.

COMPOSER: CHRISTOPHER SAINSBURY

“THE WIND IS YOUR FRIEND” FROM THE COMPOSER: This work explores free material against measured material. That is, some players are asked to contribute to when and what they play against others who have more strictly notated parts. The use of complex textures sees the work ebb and flow, with melodic parts arising from both that which is written and the free material. The conductor also shapes the overall composition in that he/she facilitates the playing of both the free material and of the measured material, and may even ‘rest’ some players. The conductor may also start with tutti (all players) or just a trio, but will invite all to play at some stage of the work. The final composition is therefore different for every performance. In style it sits somewhere between the natural music of the skies as I hear it, neo-impressionism and minimalism, and

is (hopefully) rapturous in some places.

Sainsbury’s new piece The Wind Is Your Friend will be performed by Central Coast Youth Orchestra with Patrick Brennan conducting.

The concert will also feature performances by Central Coast Symphonic Wind Orchestra, CC Primary Wind Ensemble (Super Band), Central

Coast Chamber Orchestra and Central Coast Children’s Choir.

FRIDAY JULY 24Th

For the past forty years, jazz and hip-hop music have influenced each other and in so doing created new ways for musicians to improvise and produce music reflecting their surroundings. From the beginning of the new millennium to present, this trend continues as jazz artists incorporate elements of hip-hop into their music through the use of hip-hop rhythms, samples and technologies.

The Jazz Hip-Hop ensemble “180grams” will present an entertaining and educational concert of original modern groove music and film reflecting the Central Coast and the exploration of hip-hop as a vehicle of improvisation and the use of samples and technology as voice of expression.

180grams features Ashley Turner (electric bass) and Karl Laskowski (drums) and Luke Aloysius Gallen (Vocals/Saxophones/Flutes/Samples).

CHAMBER MUSIC ON THE COAST

Formerly Crossroads Festival, this year’s event is dedicated to the Donnelly family whose contribution to the arts on the Central Coast has made them

the top philanthropists of the area. Bravo, Ruth, Peter and Glen.

ALL CONCERTS AT GREENWAY MEMORIAL CHAPEL 460 AVOCA DRIVE, GREEN POINT

FOUR FABULOUS CONCERTSSaturday 22nd August 11:00am

1. Bach In The Chapel Erin Helyard and Charmian Gadd introduce the concept of HIP, (Historically Informed Performance). Charmian will play BACH D minor Partita with the famous Chaconne which has inspired so many musicians, whilst Erin will play the harpsichord and explain some of the differences in performance. The concert will conclude with BACH Brandenburg Concerto #6,

followed by morning tea.

Saturday 22nd August 4.00pm

2. Cello ExtravaganzaThe noble violoncello will be featured in this fun concert. Cellists include Georg Pedersen, Chris Pidcock and Kenny Mizushima. Program to include SCHUBERT’S wonderful C Major Quintet and other chamber works featuring the cello. Unlike violinists, cellists are very social animals and like to get together in large numbers for a bash. The literature is vast and will no doubt feature BOCCHERINI and some great arrangements by LASZLO VARGA. The enormous range of the cello means that they can cover the outpourings of a whole orchestra. Great sounds!

Sunday 23rd August at 11am

3. Recital VirtuosoA VIRTUOSO RECITAL with SUzIE PARK and PHILLIP SHOVK. Suzie happens to be on tour in Australia and will fly from Adelaide to present this special Recital with our own Phillip Shovk who has played more notes to raise funds for the harpsichord than anyone. After this concert lunch will be provided for our subscribers and others who wish to arrange for it downstairs where Charmian will

have some interesting exhibits of instruments and paintings.

Sunday 23rd August at 2.30pm

4. Brilliant BaroqueConcertante Ensemble in a concert featuring baroque virtuoso harpsichordist Erin Helyard. The program will include: VIVALDI Concerto for Two Celli, Baroque Harpsichord Concerto, Sinfonia and Dance Suite, Autumn from The Four Seasons, and PIAzOLLA Autumn in Buenos Aires.
