general information
Audition requirementsApplicants intending to enrol in ensembles and/or individual tuition are required to audition, unaccompanied, two contrasting movements or short pieces of your choice. Technical work and sight-reading may be requested at the time of audition.
Auditions may be undertaken on the following instruments: Voice, Flute, Piccolo, Oboe, Cor Anglais, Eflat Clarinet, Bflat Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Bassoon, Contrabassoon, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, French Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Bass Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, Percussion, Harp, Piano, Violin, Viola, Violincello, Double Bass, Guitar, Bass Guitar, Drum Kit. Auditions are held outside of regular school hours. Each audition panel will consider your expressed preferences for ensemble placement but will place each applicant in what it considers to be the most appropriate ensemble for his/her development.
Auditions recordedApplicants from regional areas, or those who are unable to audition on their scheduled day for certified medical reasons, may submit a recorded audition subject to conditions.
ApplicAtion feesTo apply for any of the 2014 programs applicants are required to complete and return an application form. A non-refundable fee of $30 is charged to all applicants. Only one application fee is required, regardless of how many programs individuals wish to apply. A maximum fee of $60 applies to families. Cheques should be made payable to Griffith University.
feesFees are payable annually or quarterly, depending on programs offered. The final date for annual payment of Young Conservatorium fees is Monday 13 January 2014. Students in three or more activities at the Young Conservatorium may request the overall yearly fee be structured across four terms for 2014. A discount fee will apply for 2014 annual fees paid by 13 January, or where applicable term 2: 7 April, term 3: 30 June, term 4: 22 september. please note individual tuition fees in 2014 will be pro-rata as per the Young con calendar weeks.
commitmentBecoming a student of the Young Conservatorium is a major commitment and students are expected to attend all classes and rehearsals. It is a requirement that all students make themselves available for concert performances and rehearsals.
concerts queenslAnd conservAtorium theAtreSaturday 14 June 2014 Saturday 8 November 2014 Students involved in the Young Conservatorium program are given the opportunity to perform in concerts at Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University and other venues. The Young Conservatorium concerts are included as part of the official Queensland Conservatorium concert calendar.
reportsStudents receiving individual tuition will receive progress reports from their teacher throughout the year.
visiting ArtistsYoung Conservatorium students benefit from Queensland Conservatoriums many visiting artists. Wherever possible visiting conductors and performers take rehearsals and offer masterclasses.
AccompAnistsStudents will sometimes require the services of an accompanist. A list of official Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University accompanists can be obtained by calling the Young Conservatorium. Students are not obliged to use a Conservatorium accompanist. Where accompanists are required for exams or auditions the cost is met by the student.
instrument hireQueensland Conservatorium Griffith University has a limited number of Double Basses (half, quarter and eighth size) and Celtic Harps that can be hired for the Young Conservatorium 30 week calendar year. The hire fee for these instruments is $120 per year and is payable at the commencement of term one.
librArY privilegesStudents in Years 10, 11 & 12 receive borrowing privileges from the Queensland Conservatorium library. Students and caregivers will be required to complete the Borrowing Request Form that is forwarded to students at the commencement of 2014. Students are encouraged to take advantage of this access to the tertiary library. All Young Conservatorium students are welcome to visit the library and browse, however borrowing privileges at this time are only extended to senior secondary school students.
bursAries/scholArshipsYoung Conservatorium competitive Bursaries/Scholarships will be awarded from the auditions held in October 2013. Bursaries/Scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate a high degree of musical aptitude. Recipients will receive financial assistance towards the cost of applicable Young Conservatorium programs. All successful applicants for 2014 will be considered for bursaries.
Eligibility and selection process Successful applicants are eligible for Young Conservatorium competitive Bursaries/Scholarships. These will be determined and assessed from: a) students auditions and applications b) performance ability and commitment c) individual needs and d) any specific requirements of the Young Conservatorium programs.

dutY of cAreYoung Conservatorium cares and acknowledges the broad principles underpinning the duty of care obligations imposed on educational institutions. The principles include those of a general nature, standard of care and parameters of duty of care. Young Conservatorium students are requested to observe guidelines and instructions as advised by Young Conservatorium staff at all times.
pArking Street parking around Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University is limited. Off-street parking is available in the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre, SW1, South Bank Parklands and the Queensland Performing Arts Complex.

The Early Childhood Music programs create a musical learning environment for infants to children around seven years of age, in partnership with their parents or caregivers.
The Young Beginner program is the natural offshoot of the Young Conservatoriums Early Childhood Music activities, with programs designed to be an introduction to practical instrumental and choral music.

ConDitionS of enrolment1. Upfront fees are payable annually or quarterly, depending on programs enrolled. 2. Students in three or more activities at the Young Conservatorium may request the
overall yearly fee be structured across four terms for 2014.3. Cheques are made payable to Griffith University and can be paid to the Cashier in the
Queensland Conservatorium General Office. Students who have outstanding fees in a term may not be permitted to continue.
4. Early Childhood, Young Beginner Keyboard, Ensemble and other class fees are paid per annum prior to commencement of classes. Full payment of fees is preferred at the time of your acceptance of program offers; however final payment date for annual fees will be Monday 13 January 2014.
5. In special cases e.g. financial hardship, and at the discretion of the QCGU Business Manager, a payment plan in instalments may be devised to assist with payments.
6. Individual Tuition, ColourStrings and Young Beginner Harp is paid quarterly with due dates for discount payment required in 2014 by Term 1: 13 January, Term 2: 7 April, Term 3: 30 June, Term 4: 22 September.
7. Individual tuition fees in 2014 will be pro-rata as per the Young Conservatorium Calendar weeks. Term 1 (8weeks), Term 2 (7weeks), Term 3 (10weeks), Term 4 (5weeks)
8. Early Childhood Music (ECM) students: A sibling discount of $100 per annum is awarded for each child enrolled after the first sibling enrolment in the same year in the Early Childhood Music program.
9. Refunds will generally not be given for withdrawals from Young Conservatorium activities. No refunds will be given for failure to attend. Refunds will only be made without a service fee where classes are discontinued due to insufficient enrolments. No replacement lessons will be provided or credit given to students who fail to attend Early Childhood Music or other classes/group activities.
10. Individual tuition students must give 24 hours notice if they will not be attending lessons; otherwise teachers will not be obliged to provide make up lessons. Where the required notice is not given, any refunds or credits will not be given for tuition.
11. A student is not permitted to commence enrolment if annual fees are not paid for the year in advance. A student is not permitted to re-enrol if the individual tuition fee or agreed quarterly fee is in arrears.
12. Withdrawal from any program after your acceptance for any reason other than certified medical grounds will result in the forfeit of fees.
13. The Young Conservatorium reserves the right to decline or cancel any enrolment in any of its courses; to cancel classes at any time; and to change the teacher for any tuition at any time.
14. The Young Conservatorium reserves the right to alter details of the 2014 program.15. The Young Conservatorium reserves the right to exclude from any program any
participant who, in its opinion, places in jeopardy the safety or rights of others, or who appears to have rejected the reasonable controls placed upon them by the management and staff of that program. In this circumstance, participants excluded from any program will not receive a refund for any fees paid. The natural principles of justice will be afforded at all times.
16. The Young Conservatorium reserves absolute rights and permission to use, reproduce, copy, exhibit, or distribute any videotape, audiotape, photographs, or computer files in which a Young Conservatorium student may be included for use in Griffith University publications, publicity material, or any other such educational purpose.
17. Prices in the application proforma are inclusive of GST but are subject to change at any time.

Welcome to our Early Childhood Music (ECM) program where you and your child will have fun singing and performing, listening, imitating, observing and responding, imagining and composing, understanding and appreciating, reading and writing and being immersed in music.
Young Conservatorium recognises talent and we delight in nurturing it. Our comprehensive pre-tertiary programs continue to produce wonderful young musicians, engaging them from birth to adulthood. All our ensembles, classes and individual tuition are held at the Queensland Conservatorium.
Stand out from the crowd at your audition with our Tertiary Preparation Workshop (TPW) program. Whether youre in your final years of high school or a mature age student applying for entry to a university music degree, this program can help you better prepare in all ways for the theoretical and practical requirements of the audition process.
The Southern Cross International Music Festival has established itself as a pre-eminent festival for school and community-based performing groups. Participants work with Australias most eminent musicians, both performers and conductors in a vibrant artistic environment. Students present their musical wares to local audiences, share their skills with other performing groups and engage in instrumental masterclasses and workshops. International groups perform alongside the highly acclaimed Young Conservatorium ensembles and some of Queenslands finest school ensembles.
