Central High School principal Da-vid Prescott made a serious mistake last week in deciding to cancel the singing of the National Anthem at the school’s pep rally. Fortunately, the decision was quickly reversed, which was greatly welcomed by the people of Central. Central has to be one of the most patriotic cities in America, and peo-ple in Central strongly oppose NFL players who show disrespect for the American flag and our National An-them by “taking a knee.” In Central, people believe you should stand with your hand over your heart. Period. Since our newspapers have taken a very vocal stand against NFL players showing disrespect for the flag, we think it is important to comment on Coach Prescott. First, there is no finer man or more patriotic individual in Central than David Prescott. Over the years, the National An-them has not generally been played at Central pep rallies. But last week, some students were invited to sing the National Anthem. Coach Prescott feared there would protests that could embarrass the school. So he said no, citing safety issues. This was a mistake, as parents

flag and our country. Most people wespeak with support David Prescott. Today, when someone makes a mistake, a lot of people automatically want to throw them under the bus. But in the case of David Prescott, most people in Central don’t feel that way at all. They want him to stay on and keep doing his job. David Prescott is still in his prime and has a lot more to offer the people of Central. We hope he stays on and keeps doing the great job he has been doing at Central High School!

Superintendent Search. The Cen-tral Community School Board has been accepting applications for can-didates to replace Supt. Mike Faulk, who is retiring Dec. 31, 2017, to be-come President of the Louisiana As-sociation of School Superintendents. Now there is a movement promot-ing West Baton Rouge Parish Supt. Wes Watts for the job. This move-ment has begun even before anyone knows who the candidates for super-intendent are, as though no one could possibly be better. We’ve been down this road be-fore and know for a fact that it is the wrong road. Ten years ago, this newspaper strongly supported Ron-nie Devall for superintendent, with-out even knowing who had applied. However, the school board wisely decided to actually interview the can-didates. In the end, the board voted to hire Mike Faulk as superintendent. Ten years later, it is clear the school board chose the right man. Today, with the benefit of hind-sight, we can see how foolish we were to assume that because we knew and liked someone that they were the best person for the job. None of us should be lobbying for a candidate. We should let the board elected by the people interview the candidates fully in public and in private and do their job by hiring the very best one.

made very clear, and the decision was reversed. Soon thereafter, Mr. Prescott issued a public apology. It was obviously sincere and heartfelt. In our opinion, the case is closed. David Prescott does an outstand-ing job as principal at Central High School. He constantly does things to honor our country and our values. There is not an unpatriotic bone in his body. He’s 100 percent pro-Amer-ican, and we know it hurts him to think that some people lump him with NFL players who have contempt for the

Hi Nabor Continues a Family TraditionSam Crifasi, Family Serve North Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE — Sam Crifasi’s father Dominic immigrated to America from Italy and started a fruit stand to provide for his wife, five boys, and three girls. Sam worked in the family businesses. A practicing Catholic, Sam fell in love with a Southern girl named Mary Lou Jacocks, who was Prot-estant. She converted, they married and started having children. They lived on Calumet Street right off WinbourneAvenue in North Baton Rouge. Sam was ambitious and wanted to be in business for himself. He

and Mary Lou were on their way to having nine children. He had to aim high. One day he saw a for sale sign at the corner of Winbourne and Vic-toria Drive. He knocked over the sign, went home to Mary Lou and told her he wanted to buy it. They put a second mortgage on their house. They were com-mitted, and there was no turning back. With his brother Francis as his partner, Sam opened Hi Nabor Supermarket on January 1, 1963. It had 5,000 square feet. They named it Hi Nabor to promote a friendly

atmosphere. Sam had a knack for helping people. In fact, he wore a little sign on his pocket that said, “Can I help you please?” Sam was a peo-ple person. He was hard working, friendly, open, and honest. His nine children helped in the business. Seven are still involved. His brother Francis retired in the 1980’s and is no longer involved in the business. The hard work paid off. Hi Na-bor grew to 40,000 square feet on Winbourne. They opened a Hi Na-bor on Jones Creek in 1982 and

on Drusilla in 1992 (it has since moved to the Broadmoor Shop-ping Center). Sam and Mary Lou have passed away but the same friendly service

is continued by the children, led by president Jim Crifasi and sister Jan Crifasi. So when you’re in the store don’t be surprised if one of the Crifasi’s walks up and says, “Hi Nabor!”

Flood of 2016 Presented Greatest Challenge BATON ROUGE — The Great Flood of August 2016 swept into North Baton Rouge with a vengeance, flooding areas that had never flooded and areas that everyone agreed would never flood. One of those areas was Win-bourne at Airline. Hi Nabor Su-permarket got three to four feet of water, which devastated the store. Without flood insurance, the Crifasi family was left to fend

for themselves. Perhaps in part for that reason, the family had no rea-son to delay and moved forward immediately to gut the store and stop the mold from growing. Hi Nabor’s store on Winbourne is still its most successful location, and closing the store was not even a possibility. Crews worked day and night. Then after four weeks of back-breaking labor, the store was ready to re-open! This was six months to a year earlier than other simi-

lar stores which were hit by the flood. Today, there is little if any evidence in the store that a flood occurred. Hi Nabor on Winbourne is a busy store, typically packed with business. A couple of years ago, a local organization made the state-ment that there is no supermarket in 70805, but that’s not true. Hi Nabor is a very successful 40,000 square foot supermarket with a wide variety of quality meat, pro-duce, and grocery items in 70805.

HI NABOR SUPERMARKET FLOODED — Last August 2016, Hi Nabor Supermarket was hit with three to four feet of flood water, creating a gooey mess. However, the Crifasi family went to work right away, gutted the store, treated it for mold, and rebuilt. The store reopened after only four weeks — a remarkable achievement.

YR president Jonathan Davis, Scott Wilfong,

BATON ROUGE — The greatest generation still lives! Here in Ba-ton Rouge, that generation is epito-mized by the Crifasi family. Their mother and father im-migrated from Italy in the early 1900’s. Of the five boys and three girls, six are still alive, including five who reside in the Baton Rouge. They range in age from 83 to 100. Every Saturday the Baton Rouge five gather at the lunchroom at Hi Nabor on Florida Boulevard to eat breakfast, catch up on the latest family news, and reminisce about old times. Brothers Sam and Peter Crifasi have passed away, and sister Jenny who is 100 lives in Houston. The five who live in Baton Rouge, who rarely miss the Saturday breakfasts, are Rosemary Crifasi Orr, Brother Eldon Crifasi, Francis Crifasi, Ben Crifasi, and Lorraine Crifasi Drago. Ben Crifasi, 95, served in World War II as a corpsman for the Navy and Marine Corps. He still goes to work almost everyday at Hi Nabor. Brother Eldon has been a Catho-lic brother for more than 75 years and is still working at Catholic High, where he works on alumni affairs. All of the siblings grew up in the Fairfields area and went to school at Fairfields Elementary School. They still speak fondly of their years at the school. The brothers and sisters have a lot of children. Sam and Ben have nine each. Peter has six. Francis has five, all boys. Lorraine and Rosemary have four each. Jenny has one. Of course, Brother Eldon has no natural children but he does claim thousands of young men he has taught at schools all over the deep South. On the day I visited the break-fast, Francis’ son Fred Crifasi came

to visit the group. He conducted an interview with the five siblings and asked them to recall memories of their mom and dad and growing up in the 1930’s, 1940’s and 1950’s. The video was aired live on Facebook and had more than 6,000 views two days later. Dozens of viewers posted about their admira-tion for the Crifasi family. Participants love coming to the breakfasts. Otherwise, they would be so overwhelmed by obligations to children and grandchildren that they would begin to lose contact. One of those missing from the group is brother Sam Crifasi, the founder of Hi Nabor. He was a fa-vorite of the group and is greatly missed. Sam Crifasi’s wife Mary Lou died in 2009, several years before Sam passed away in 2014. Those years were very hard on Sam. Every Sunday after she died, Sam bought a dozen roses to take to her grave. On the way there, he would play the song Mary Lou. At the cemetery, Sam would sit and talk to Mary Lou, bringing her

BATON ROUGE - Theresa Lemoine Alonzo, May 1, 1927- October 7, 2017. “Whenever we see yellow butterflies, we think of mom who often told us that she sends them to watch over us when she cannot. Our beloved mother, Monkee to her grandchildren, Dale to friends and Nanny to her siblings passed into the arms of Jesus and her hus-band, Jay, on October 7, 2017” “She died at exactly 1:43 a.m.

— 1-4-3 was often used in our family to be another way to say, ‘I love you!’ Mother left us with that final thought at that moment.” Theresa was born a few weeks

before the great flood of 1927, to Edith Dufour Lemoine and Worthy Charles Lemoine of Simmesport, Louisiana, the oldest child of six. She is survived by daughter and son-in-law Roxanne and Earl At-kinson, three sons and daughters-in-law, Jay Dennis and Debra Alonzo, Robin and Lisa Alonzo and Kevin and Lee Ann Alonzo; 16 grandchil-dren, 23 great- grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jerry and Iris Lemoine, Don and Lori Lemoine, and a sister and brother-in-law, Reba and Lucas Breaux. She was a graduate of Ba-ton Rouge Business College and worked as assistant to the nun who ran Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in the late 1940’s. She was a re-tired EBR school bus driver with 25 years of service. Theresa was an artist who left beautiful paintings on canvas, por-celain and wood. She taught cat-echism and led Bible studies. She was a leader in the school commu-nity and served as PTO president. She was an excellent seamstress who made clothes for herself and many others. She served others with meals, visits and a compas-sionate heart. To her family she epitomized the Proverbs 31 woman, “…her chil-dren arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: ‘Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.”’ Theresa was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Min-nie Lemoine Aquillard and broth-er, W.C. Lemoine, Jr. Visitation was at Rabenhorst East, 11000 Florida Blvd. on Tues-day, October 10 with a Rosary. Visitation continued at St. Alphon-sus Catholic Church with a mass of Christian burial conducted by Father Mike Moroney. Burial followed in Resthaven Mausoleum. Pallbearers were her seven grandsons, Daniel, Evan, Joel and Kyle Atkinson and Na-than, Collin and Dustin Alonzo. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. “Look for the yellow butterflies! We love you, Monkee!” Please share condolences at www.rabenhorst.com.

No. 2 Spot in State GovernmentConservative Republican

Endorsed by Republican Party of East Baton Rouge Parish

Endorsed by Governor Mike Foster Endorsed by Crimefighters of Louisiana

Small Town LouisianaAngele Davis grew up in Clinton. She learned to hunt, fish, and shoot early in life. Angele is a Life Member of the National Rifle Association and avidly hunts and fishes. In fact, she’s a better shot in the duck blind than her husband!

An Outstanding Education and CareerShe earned a full basketball scholarship to college, Springhill College in Mobile. After graduating, she returned to LSU and received her Masters in Business Administration (MBA) and then went on to work in the private sector.

Governor Mike Foster Asked Her to Serve Our State In 1996, she accepted the call from Louisiana’s new governor, Mike Foster, to serve as his Deputy Commission of Administra-tion. There she learned how to put the conservative govern-ing principles of lower taxes and less government into prac-tice. She went on to serve as Secretary of Culture, Recreation & Tourism and later as Commissioner of Administration, Louisi-ana’s chief administrative officer.

ANGELE DAVISCandidate for State Treasurer

Saved Taxpayers Millions Angele Davis took the fight for Louisiana taxpayers directly to Wall Street and won. Her successful efforts to secure 10 increases in Louisiana’s credit rating resulted in millions of dollars in interest savings for Louisiana taxpayers. While the Wall Street sharks just saw numbers, Angele Davis saw the financial well being of the people of Louisiana.

Slashed Wasteful SpendingUsing her public finance management skills, Angele Davis led the effort to slash $2.5 billion from our state budget and reduced state positions by thousands. Her record is one of innovative management and hard-nosed common sense. She knows that the best government is less government.

Angele Davis Will Be a Smart, Tough and Aggressive State Treasurer for LouisianaSolid Business Experience in the Private SectorAngele Davis manages her own successful small business, the Davis Kelley Group, working with businesses from start-ups to Fortune 500 companies. She’s helped them solve complex problems and expand operations. As a business owner, she knows we must stop wasteful government spending, end job killing regulations, and restore Louisiana’s credit rating.

A Watchdog for Louisiana TaxpayersShe’ll continue the tradition of Treasurer John Kennedy and keep an eye on the legislature, which has allowed state govern-ment to grow out of control and raised our taxes.

Supporting President Trump’s PoliciesAngele Davis strongly supports President Trump’s pro-growth policies. Cut taxes on our middle class! A strong and vibrant plan to rebuild Louisiana’s infrastructure! Reduce burdensome regulations on our small businesses so they can create jobs!

A Determination to Make Louisiana the Best Possible Place to Live, Work, and Raise Our FamiliesAngele Davis is deeply committed to her faith. She and Tim attend St. Joseph’s Cathedral where she serves as a Eucharistic Minister to the homebound. She is a recipient of the Bishop’s Award for the Greater Baton Rouge Diocese and she has served as the Chair of Catholic Charities for the Baton Rouge Diocese. Angele Davis will put our families first!
