Observational DrawingDraw What YOU See!

Overview: Stay Inside or Go Outside and Draw what you seeEstimated Time: 25 minutes or more if you likeMaterials Needed: Paper, pencil and a solid surface to draw upon (book or clipboard)Activity Explanation: This activity will help you become a good observer of the world around you.Idea Examples: (Don’t limit yourself to the list…expand your vision and just draw…it is the process that helps you become a better artist and above all ENJOY!)

Go outside and draw a tree with all the wonderful textures

Go outside and look up at the clouds rolling by and sketch out what you see in the formations (Unicorn, Clown, Balloons…look closely as the clouds change and move-what else do you see?)

Go outside and draw your front or your back yard…yes…this is a Landscape!

Not outdoor weather…stay inside and draw your pet (if you have one) while it is sitting still or sleeping

No pet…how about sketch a picture of your sibling or parent

Need something that sits still…set up objects in your room (toys, shoes, cups, even a crumpled pair of socks will make a great subject for observing…etc)…this is a Still Life (because it sits still)

Continuous Line DrawingOverview: Stay Inside or Go Outside and Draw Estimated Time: 25 minutes or more if you likeMaterials Needed: Paper, pencil, crayons or markers and a solid surface to draw upon (book or clipboard or table if indoors)Activity Explanation: This activity will help you to be loose and not worry about making mistakes. The only rule to this drawing is that your pencil CAN NOT come off the surface of the paper when you are drawing the continuous line.Idea Examples: (Don’t limit yourself to the list…expand your vision and just draw…it is the process that helps you become a better artist and above all ENJOY!)

Continuous Line Drawing 1:Start at the top left -hand corner of the paper, place your pencil or marker on the paper and begin to draw a continuous line that moves throughout the paper without touching itself or crossing itself at any point (see sample below)Now draw 3 large shapes on top of this continuous line and color in with crayon or marker the spaces the lines make within the shapes (see the sample below)

Continuous Line Drawing 2 (optional extension activity):This time find a toy or a plant (something that will sit still- Still Life)Remember the rule for this type of drawing…the pencil CANNOT leave the surface of the paper while you are drawing!While you are looking at the object you chose to draw, follow the edge of the object with your eyes and move your pencil on the paper as your eyes move over the object…move SLOWLY with your pencil drawing as your eye traces the object.

Draw ONE continuous line. Do not let it touch or cross over.

Draw 3 large shapes. Fill in the shapes with
