What Would You Keep In A Jar?

Dyed Pasta MandalaOverview: Stay Inside or Go Outside and CreateEstimated Time: 25 minutes or more if you likeMaterials Needed: Paper-plate, small amount of various shaped pasta, Tablespoon of rubbing alcohol, food coloring, plastic ziplock bags and a solid surface to work on (kitchen counter would be good for the first part of process)Activity Explanation: This activity will help you expand your knowledge of radial, symmetrical designIdea Examples: (Don’t limit yourself…expand your vision and just create…it is the process that helps you become a better artist and above all ENJOY!)How to Dye Pasta: Plastic bag, any shape of pasta, a few drops of food coloring and 1 TBLS of rubbing alcoholSpread out and let dry and then create your symmetrical design on a clean paper plate

Mandala: a geometric circular design split into 4 parts

Cut a square out of the center of the Styrofoam plate Draw a design that starts from the bottom right hand corner

(center) and goes to the top left Put marker on each time you print and rotate the design so the

center is at the middle to complete the radial design

Egyptian Cartouche DrawingOverview: Stay Inside or Go Outside Estimated Time: 25 minutes or more if you likeMaterials Needed: Paper, pencil, markers, scissors, colored pencils and a solid surface to draw upon (book or clipboard) or a table is you are staying insideActivity Explanation: This activity will help you create an Egyptian CartoucheIdea Examples: (Don’t limit yourself…expand your vision and just draw…it is the process that helps you become a better artist and above all ENJOY!)Hieroglyphics are symbols, or picture writing, known to have been created by the Ancient Egyptians. These writings were carved into stone and or painting on papyrus, to record important information about their Pharaohs and Queens, as well as their history. Hieroglyphics are positioned vertically, or top to bottom.

Write your name in Hieroglyphs vertically in the Cartouche and add color

Observational DrawingDraw What YOU See!

Go outside and draw a tree with all the wonderful textures

Go outside and look up at the clouds rolling by and sketch out what you see in the formations (Unicorn, Clown, Balloons…look closely as the clouds change and move-what else do you see?)

Go outside and draw your front or your back yard…yes…this is a Landscape!

Not outdoor weather…stay inside and draw your pet (if you have one) while it is sitting still or sleeping

No pet…how about sketch a picture of your sibling or parent

Need something that sits still…set up objects in your room (toys, shoes, cups, even a crumpled pair of socks will make a great subject for observing…etc)…this is a Still Life (because it sits still)

Using your imagination, if you could see under the ground from the surface down…what would the life of the bugs look like?

Think about adding pattern and texture to the layers of soil as you draw the families of insects in their underground habitat. (see sample below)

wearing overalls and farming for cucumbers…what will you keep in your jar?
