CENTERLINE – ELSEVIER SKILLS
MODULE
ELSEVIER SKILLS INTEGRATION –
ADMIN, INSTRUCTOR (PROCTOR) & USER GUIDES
JULY 09, 2019
V. 07092019-1
Centerline / Elsevier Skills Module – Admin Guide: Overview: As of Q1 2019, the Centerline Learning Management System offers an Elsevier Skills module.
This allows clients to add Elsevier Skills to LMS Learning Objects (Courses) and integrates with both the
LMS Management Impact Module (aka ROMS / Competencies) and Elsevier Skills Website.
When accessing ROMS Checklists, users can single click a hyperlink and the web browser will link to user
/ skills specific elements on the Elsevier website where they can access learning materials pertaining to
the particular skill (including, where applicable, videos and training documents and tests), as well as
review (read only) the specific competencies to be evaluated by a Proctor.
A Proctor (processor, validator, etc.), assigned through the LMS, can link to proctor / user / skills specific
web pages, where they can review user test results, then complete their competencies evaluation
Upon completion by the Proctor, the skill Completion will be auto-updated in the LMS ROMS details.
Proctors can enter additional info directly into the ROMS details page (e.g. Metric, comments) and users
can enter comments, as per the current system.
After completion of LMS Skills Checklists, ROMS completion info is available at multiple levels including
reports, roster and profile / enrollments. Checklist links will continue to allow access to the Elsevier user
/ skills for a more detailed review and audit / reporting purposes.
This document provides step by step instructions for both Elsevier Skills setup and operation from
Admin, Instructor / Proctor and User standpoints.
Please note, this is version 1.0 of the Elsevier Skills Integration. Further capabilities, such as greater reporting from the Elsevier
site and greater transfer of data from Elsevier to Centerline LMS are being reviewed for future updates.

Add Elsevier Skills to Client LMS - Step by Step
Overview: Elsevier Skills can be loaded one at time or en masse via Excel uploader to the LMS
system. It is recommended that Learnsoft’s Development Group perform the initial bulk upload
and once tested and approved by the client, Admin can upload future / incremental updates.
Note: In the initial release of the Elsevier Skills module, when utilized, only the top level skill description itself will
populate in the LMS Skills / ROMS sections. Future versions may prepopulate additional fields and / or subskills. Your
Learnsoft Project Manager can work with you on customizations (charges may apply) required for your organization.
1. Request Project Manager to add Elsevier Skills to LMS System
a. Learnsoft Project Managers can arrange to add lists of Elsevier skills saved in a
predefined Excel format into the LMS. See image below for a screen clip of Elsevier skills saved in a predefined Excel format with
sample data. This was provided directly by Elsevier.
b. Upon successful upload, the Elsevier skills will be visible in the Skill List (Advanced
Menu > User Management > Skill)
c. Clicking on the Name of a Skill, will show the Skill Detail Page, with the link to the
Elsevier site shown in the Objective URL field.
2. Admin Bulk Entry of Elsevier Skills to LMS System
Note: This will show how an CSA (or Admin with access to Skills) can add Elsevier skills in bulk. This assumes the skills
have been provided in the above preformatted version. If client is looking to add skills one by one, please see the Skill
section of the LMS Help Wiki.
a. Access the Skill List (Advanced Menu > User Management > Skill)
b. Click on the Actions button to bring up the Actions Menu
c. Click on the XLS Upload Hyperlink to access the Bulk Excel Uploader Template.
Open the file, add the preformatted data and Save locally. Note: During initial development of this document Description, Objective URL and Vendor
Skill ID Fields are available. Future version may open other fields.
Note: If file is already formatted, skip to step d.
d. In the Actions Menu, click the Browse button to open the Windows Explorer
system, navigate to the saved file, select and click Open.
e. The screen will close and the path for the selected file will fill the upload text box.
Click Upload.
f. The Excel Import / Upload process may take a few minutes. When completed, the
Actions Menu will close and the processed files will be added to the Skill List. Note: Make sure to review to ensure all skills / Objective URL Links were added correctly.
Select Allow ROMS Checkbox & Add Selected Elsevier Skills to
Learning Object - Step by Step
Overview: Elsevier Skills become available for use by users / proctors by adding them to the
Available Objectives section of a Learning Object’s Details (This is part of the Management
Impact Module, aka ROMS. See the ROMS User Guide in the LMS Help Wiki for additional detailed
step by step instructions for adding objectives to a Learning Object). Below are instructions to
add Elsevier Skills to the Available Objectives section.
Note: In the initial release of the Elsevier Skills module and creation of this documentation, version 4.5 of the ROMS
module is being showcased. This is currently in process of an enhancement and screenshots below may differ from the
updated version.
1. Create / Update / Save the Learning Object to which you wish to add Elsevier skills. Make
sure to select the Allow ROMS check box.
2. Access the Learning Object Details & scroll down to the Available Objectives Section
a. After a Learning Object has been created and saved, the Available Objective
Section will become available for use. During the initial creation process, prior to
saving, this section is not yet enabled.
Note: Make sure you are NOT in EDIT MODE.
3. There are two methods to Add Objectives. Step by step details for each appears below:
a. Add Objectives One at a Time Note: This method allows greater detailed entry of Objective parameters.
b. Add Objectives in Bulk Note: This method allows easier lookup and quick addition of multiple objectives. Even if this
method is used, you may need to edit each objective to add additional parameters.
Add Objectives One at Time
1. In the Available Objectives Section, click the New Objectives button to bring up the Add
Learning Object ROMS / Learning Object Objectives detail screen
2. Use the Competency / Skill dropdown selector, scroll to find, then select the Elsevier Skill
you wish to add to this Learning Object.
a. Once selected the skill will show in the Competency / Skill* field and the
corresponding link to the Elsevier website will show in the Objective URL field. Note: Currently, The Competency / Skill dropdown displays skills in the order in which they were
entered into the system. If wishing for a more refined search use the Bulk Upload button / method
outlined in the next subsection.
3. Fill in the additional fields.
a. Display Order – (Required) This is the order in which multiple skills will be displayed
in the competencies / skills checklist when viewed by the user / proctor. 1 will
appear at the top and, 2 will appear second, just below, etc.
b. Require Approval Checkbox – Originally designed to allow Proctor to select if this
skill should apply to a specific user. The general current practice is to check if
require completion is checked.
c. Require Completion – Check if this skill requires a Proctor / Validator or similar to
approve completion of a skill. If the user can self-monitor, then leave unchecked.
d. Objective – (optional) Allows you to list specific Objectives that will be reviewed
when determining if the competency / skill is complete. For Elsevier skills, since
these individual items will be reflected when accessing the Elsevier skill details
through a graphic link, it is recommended to put a message letting the user know to
access the graphical link, such as “Click the link to the right to access the list of
individual objectives”
e. WBT Type: - When using Elsevier skills, select the AICC option. (For other skills, this
may be optional, but should match the CBT type when accessing external data).
f. Duration – (Required) The length of time, in days a user has to complete the skill
successfully. Example, if thirty days, enter 30.
4. Once all the info has been entered click the Save button. The screen will close and the
Elsevier skill will now be added to the Available Objectives Section.
Note: If wishing to edit, click the edit pencil icon ( ) to the right.
5. Repeat as needed until all skills for this Learning Object have been entered. Note: Skills will list from top to bottom in ascending order dependent upon the Display Order
entered when creating the skill. Only 5 skills will display. To show more, click the Show More
Objectives Link.
Add Objectives in Bulk
1. In the Available Objectives Section, click the Bulk Upload button to bring up the Skill
Lookup / Skill List screen
2. Use column sort capabilities & the Filter tool (magnifying glass icon ( to help find the
skills you wish to add.
Note: Current filter options allow search by Skill Name, Vendor and Skill
Code.
3. Select the checkbox to the far left of the line of each skill you wish to bulk add to this
Learning Object.
4. Click the Add Skill button.
5. The Skill Lookup / Skill List window will close and the skills will be added to the Available
Competencies section. Note: You may need to scroll down to see the section.
6. Click the edit / pencil icon( ) to view details of any specific competency line item.
a. The following sections will be prepopulated:
Duration – (Required) Blank. You must enter.
Display Order – (Required) Will be auto-assigned. You can change.
Require Approval Checkbox – Auto-selected.
Require Completion – Auto-selected.
Objective URL – Auto-Entered with link to Elsevier Site.
b. Edit / Update to add additional parameters as required. When finished, click the
SAVE button
7. Repeat as needed until all your parameters and objectives have been successfully added
to the Learning Object.
Select Force ROMS (optional) & Assign Instructor / Proctor to
Learning Object Instance
Overview: Once a Learning Object has been set-up, Allow ROMS checkbox selected and Skills
added to the Available Objectives Section, each associated Learning Object Instance (aka Class
scheduling) needs to have an Instructor / Proctor added who will ultimately approve the skills
on the Elsevier site (linked through the LMS Checklist). Additionally, if making the completion of
Objectives mandatory each LOI needs to have the Force ROMS checkbox selected.
Note: In the initial release of the Elsevier Skills module and creation of this documentation,
Proctors must have Instructor Rights assigned and must be assigned to an LOI. Future versions
may separate Proctors / Instructors.
1. Create / Update / Save the Learning Object Instance(s) to which you wish to require
Elsevier skills.
Note: If updating, make sure to enter Edit Mode.
2. Make sure to select the Force ROMS check box for each LOI.
3. Select the Instructor / Proctor who is responsible for completing the Elsevier Skills
Checklists 1. Note: In initial version, select an Instructor. From an LMS standpoint, any LMS authorized
Instructor or Admin can update, so limiting to specific Proctors will require operational
operating procedures at client level. An future update to the ROMS module may separate
instructors and proctors.
4. After all updates are entered, click Save or Save and Exit to save changes.
Assign / Enroll in Learning Object Instance
Overview: Elsevier Skills become available for use by users / proctors through a Checklist object
that is a link in the My Courses (similar to links to tests, evaluations, etc). Access becomes
available as soon as a user is successfully enrolled into a Learning Object Instance (of a Learning
Object containing Skills).
Use your normal processes to Assign Users, Enroll Users or allow Users to Enroll in the desired
Learning Object instance.
Note: See the LMS Wiki for details on Assignments, Search and Enroll options if needed.
1. Upon successful enrollment (assignment) into a Learning Object Instance of a Learning
Object, the Checklist Icon link ( ) will appear in the My Task (Displaying Courses) section
of the Overview Tab / User Dashboard.
Note: Clicking this icon will bring up the ROMS checklist with links to the Elsevier Skills. See
next section for details.
After User Completes Course, Instructor Updates Class Completion
(Per Normal Methods)
Overview: As per normal classes, for Instructor Led Training, the Instructor is required to mark
the user Complete in the Class Roster. If there are competencies associated with such a course,
then after the User is marked Complete by the instructor, the User’s status will change to Class
Session Complete. Once the associated Competencies are marked Complete by the Proctor, the
User’s class session automatically will be marked as Complete and move to the User’s
Transcript.
1. Use your normal process to access the Roster.
2. Update the User’s status to Complete (or the appropriate result). 1. User will be placed into status of Class Session Complete until Elsevier Competencies are marked
as completed by proctor. After both class and competencies are marked completed status will
change to Complete.
Note: If user moves to completed status without Proctor Updating Competencies, this
may mean that the Learning Object Instance did not select the Force ROMS checkbox.
User Reviews Elsevier Skills / Takes Test
Overview: Once a User enrolls (is enrolled or assigned) in a Course with associated Elsevier
Competencies, a listing of skills is available via a simple click of the Checklist icon ( ) available
when viewing the course listed in the My Task (Displaying Courses) section of the Overview Tab
/ User Dashboard.
Once the Skill Checklist is displayed, the User, simply clicks the Launch icon / hyperlink ( )
to the right of the Elsevier Competency / Skill they wish to review.
Using the Learnsoft Elsevier Skills Module API, clicking the link will bring the User to a Skill / User
specific section hosted on API servers. Here the User can review info pertaining to the specific
competency, play related videos, preview (but not update) the Objectives / Tasks associated
with the competency they will be required to perform with a proctor and take a skill specific
test.
Depending on the specific Client requirements, User access (and possibly test completion) may
be required prior to a Proctor testing the User’s demonstrated performance of the specific
competency (/ individual objectives).
The User is able to also access the LMS details for each competency, review, but not update, any
info entered by the Proctor and enter their comments.
Finally, once the course and Competencies are both marked completed, the User will be able to
access and review this information by accessing the Checklist in their Overview / User
Dashboard Transcripts or in the Enrollments Section of their Profile.

Reviewing Elsevier Sill Completion Results
Overview: Elsevier skill completion information is accessible in viewable, printable and
exportable formats in the LMS system and on the Elsevier site, linked through the LMS system.
There are two main methods to access this information.
1. Review Elsevier Skill Completion Results stored in LMS
Top level completion information passed from Elsevier to LMS ROMS system
and information manually entered by proctor / user in ROMS system is
available through ROMS reports, checklists and proctor competencies.
2. Review Elsevier Skill Completion Results stored in Elsevier Servers
Detailed Step by Step proctor marked up results of Elsevier competencies
are available through LMS links to the Elsevier servers found in the
checklists and proctor competencies
Below, this document will detail how to access this information.
Note: In the initial release of the Elsevier Skills module, specific details of the step-by-step processes and proctor
determination of competency are stored on the Elsevier site. The data for each skill can be individually access through
a link from the LMS and both viewed and printed, but at this time Elsevier only passes Completion status to the LMS,
so the LMS data (unless marked separately as part of the ROMS module) shows the final completion info. This may
adjust in future versions if Elsevier exposes more information to the LMS.
Review Elsevier Skill Completion Results stored in LMS
Overview: Elsevier / ROMS Skill information is available in Report format in the LMS in multiple
locations. The ROMS reports will list the Course, relevant dates, each skill, completion status,
assignment / completion date information, and, if entered, metrics, scores, user and proctor comments.
Reports can be accessed (depending on user groups and permissions) via the User Profile (both at the
top level and through the checklists associated with each learning object containing Elsevier / ROMS
competencies), in the checklist link through the Roster and in the Reports section. Below, we detail
accessing via each method.
Note: LMS Report and Checklist information shows top level skill
and completion info from each Elsevier Competency and additional
Metric, Score, User and Proctor Comments info if added to the skill
using the LMS ROMS system. It does not list or show the results for
the individual Elsevier STEPS. Those are accessible via links through
the LMS checklist to the Elsevier Site. See next section for details.
