Michael Hurley watched his world unravel following an extramarital affair that ended his 25-year marriage. In August 2009, he was short of money, out of a job, and seeking to salvage a life that had foundered. Deeply in need of perspective, he took to the open seas in a 32-foot sailboat, Gypsy Moon. His two-year outward odyssey, deterred by rough weather and mechanical troubles, mirrors an introspective search for true love and meaning. While at sea, he began writ-ing keen observations to reconcile events from his own past, and through these poi-gnant, personal stories, he draws larger life lessons for the reader on such diverse topics as faith and disbelief, life and death, love and marriage.

—Kirkus Reviews

Excerpt from ONCE UPON A GyPSy MOON:

“ To me, sailing is a way of looking at life, or it is nothing. It is a philoso-phy, not a space on one’s calendar between the Friday board meeting and Sunday brunch....People do not sail out of sight of land and endure the monotony of an unchanging sea for days on end, punctuated occa-sionally by the heart-thumping anxiety of storms and the uncertain contours of a distant landfall, far from aid, because it is fun. (Though to be fair, in many moments it is precisely that.) They sail because they know the journey itself is its own reward, that it leads to some-place beyond a mere geographical destination, and because they hear the call of Thoreau’s distant drummer to go wherever that might be.”

our sTem CellsThe Mystery of Life and Secrets of Healing

DR. ROBIN L. SMITH, MSGR. TOMASZ TRAFNy, AND DR. MAx GOMEZ

True stories of people’s health struggles—and the exciting scientific improvements and cures many of them are experiencing because of adult stem cell research and treatment.

OUR STEM CELLS is an easy to read, carefully researched, and clear-eyed view of medicine many decades in the making that is now paying off with treatments that repair damaged hearts, restore sight, kill cancer, cure diabetes, heal burns, and stop the march of such degen-erative diseases as Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, and Lou Gehrig’s disease. The emotionally and intellectually stimu-lating stories throughout the book dramatically illustrate that stem cell therapies can change the way we live our lives after being afflicted by a disease or trauma. The book is the result of a unique collaboration between the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Culture and the Stem for Life Foundation. It includes a special address by His Holiness Benedict XVI, urging increased support and awareness for advancements in adult stem cell research.

•Dr. Robin L. Smith became the chief executive officer and chairman of the board of NeoStem, effective June 2, 2006, after first joining the company as chairman of its advisory board in September 2005. She is the president and serves on the board of directors of the Stem for Life Foundation. She received a medical degree from yale University in 1992 and a master’s degree in business administration from the Wharton School in 1997.

•Since 2006, Rev. Tomasz Trafny has served as the official at the Pontifical Council for Culture, head of Science and Faith Department (Vatican City State) and executive director of STOQ Project. His focus is on matters related to the wide-ranging dialogue between science and religion, especially cultural analysis of scientific advancements.

•Dr. Max Gomez is one of television’s most respected medical journalists. He has produced award-winning health and science segments for network stations in New york and Philadelphia, and has reported for Dateline, Today, and 48 Hours. For more than three decades, he’s earned nine Emmy Awards. Dr. Gomez graduated with honors from Princeton University and received his Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the Wake Forest School of Medicine. Among the many boards he serves on is the Stem for Life Foundation and the American Heart Association.

•The Vatican will prepare and release international and multi- language news releases when the book is published.

•There are 1.2 billion Catholics worldwide, and 64 million Catholics in the United States.

•Cooperation with organizations like the Stem for Life Foundation (SFLF) is anticipated as two of the book’s authors are on the board of directors.

LARRy WINTERS

Marketing executive Larry Winters offers the keys to success and financial freedom.

At the age of 24, working with his wife at a car wash, Larry Winters was struggling to get by. He decided he needed to make a change for the better, so he seized control of his life and, day by day, built his own business. Along the way, he learned valuable lessons about sacrifice, personal responsi-bility, determination, and independence.

LIVE THE DREAM is Winters’s inspiring story of his journey from a young man with no ambition to an accom-plished man in complete control of his financial destiny. He uses examples from his own life to teach readers how to gain their own financial freedom. Most importantly, Winters stresses how self-limitation is damaging and holds people back, keeping them from achieving the successful lives they desire.

A blueprint for anyone who wants to succeed, LIVE THE DREAM will encourage readers to give up the excuses and achieve their life goals, all while staying grounded in what really matters: family, friends and faith.

•Larry Winters is the founder and president of Leadership Team Development, Inc., a company that provides busi-ness support materials for Amway business owners in North America. He regularly gives motivational talks to large groups across the country.

•LIVE THE DREAM will appeal to people working for small businesses, a group that employs just over half of all pri-vate sector workers in the U.S. today.

•Books by business leaders associated with Amway are proven sellers. Amway founder Rich DeVos’s most recent book, Ten Powerful Phrases for Positive People (Center Street, 11/08), has sold more than 73,000 copies.

New York Times bestselling author Charles Martin’s spellbinding novel about a retired Texas Ranger, torn between his past and future, is now in paperback.

Third generation Texas Ranger Tyler Steele is the last of a dying breed—a modern-day cowboy living in a world that doesn’t quite understand his clear view of right and wrong and instinct to defend those who can’t defend themselves. Despite his strong moral compass, Ty has trouble seeing his greatest weakness. His hard outer shell, the one essential to his work, made him incapable of forging the emotional connection his wife Andie so desperately needed.

Now retired, raising their son Brodie on his own, and in risk of losing his ranch, Ty doesn’t know how to rebuild from the rubble of his life. The answer comes in the form of Samantha and her daughter Hope. On the run from an abusive ex who has the resources and the determination to hunt them down, they are in danger, desperate, and alone. Ty knows he can help—protecting the innocent is what he does best. As his relationship with Sam and Hope unfolds, Ty realizes he must confront his weakness if he wants to protect them and, ultimately, offer the real strength they truly need.

The PerFeCT GenTlemAnA Muslim Boy Meets the West

IMRAN AHMAD

Now in paperback, Imran Ahmad’s “charming, laugh-out-loud-funny memoir of a Pakistani Muslim boy growing up in the western world!” —John Berendt, author of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

At the age of one, Ahmad and his family emigrated to England, where he grew up to become a self-proclaimed “good boy”—an obedient son, an excellent student, and a respectful adherent to his faith. Fully embracing his new culture, he strove to become the quintessential English gentleman, taking to heart the founding principles of his new culture—truth, justice, equality, fair play…and a pas-sion for the Jaguar XJS.

When a fellow schoolboy tries to convert him, Ahmad sets off on a life-long quest to assure himself that his religious choice is the right one. Seeking guidance from his faith for such personal experiences as racism, bigotry, the prof ligate behavior of his peers, and the bewildering signals of the opposite sex makes for thoughtful—and downright delight-ful—reading. With a unique style and unflinching honesty, THE PERFECT GENTLEMAN addresses serious issues in an extraordinarily light way and will leave readers think-ing deeply and laughing out loud.

•Since its hardcover publication, as well as it’s earlier publication under the title Unimagined in the United Kingdom, the book has garnered much acclaim. It’s been praised by such notable authors as John Berendt and Sue Townsend, as well as O, The Oprah Magazine. It was named a book of the year by The Independent, Guardian, and the Sydney Morning Herald, and has been positively reviewed in a number of other newspapers, magazines, and blogs.

•The hardcover was featured in Details Magazine as a must-read memoir.

•Ahmad has appeared on television and radio in the UK and Australia.

•Hardcover ISBN: 978-1-4555-0849-5, 4/12

“ Very clearly and vividly written, it’s funny and perceptive about schools and neighbors and friends and girls and especially about the narrator himself.”

—Philip Pullman, author of The Golden Compass series

“ Yes, you can laugh while having your conscious-ness raised; this Pakistani immigrant’s memoir of aspiring to be the ideal Englishman proves it.”

Excerpt from UNWRITTEN:

He was quiet a moment. “Do you have a favorite word?”

I thought a minute. “Epilogue.”

He tilted his head to one side. “Good word. Interesting choice, but good.” He nodded slowly. “Got another?”

I shrugged.

“Mine is ‘do-over.’”

He often talked in circles. Or spirals. More like strands of DNA. Nothing was wasted. Everything connected. He waved me around the tree, hooked his arm inside mine, and led me away from the platform. The ocean lapped on our left. A southwest wind had flattened it. I took a deep breath. Salt filled my lungs. He nodded as we walked. “yours is a painful story. It hurts to hear it.”“But I didn’t tell it to you.”

“your face tells me every time I see you.”

Bait fish schooled beyond the swells. “Ought to try living it.”

He shook his head, staring south, back several decades. Bald head. His face a roadmap. Wrinkle leading into wrinkle. “Mine is enough.”

They say some people look like their dogs; debut author and triple-Dachshund-owner Matt Ziselman is learning to be like his dogs. In HOUNDED he shows us his journey, crafting a charming and powerful memoir through the eyes (not to mention noses, tongues, and tails) of his three quirky, wise, hot-dog-shaped pets.

Baxter, Maya, and Molly are three dogs with three very different personalities—and different life lessons, which they may impart willingly or reveal only to those who know what to seek. Here’s a taste of what Ziselman is able to decipher from their barking, tail-wagging, and stubborn conquest of the coziest chair in the living room:

• Listen, especially when there’s nothing to hear.

• If you’re going to be moody, “happy” is a pretty good choice.

• Be heard.

• When it comes to what matters, size doesn’t.

• If it belongs to you, prove it.

These Dachshunds know how to live life to thefullest (and keep the Ziselman household on a short leash), and in this delightful book, they share their secrets.

a funny, bittersweet memoir by a flawed human being who’s lucky to live with three adorable dachshunds.

■ from Marley and Me (William Morrow, 2005) to The Art of Racing in the Rain (Harper, 2008) to Oogy (GcP, 10/10), books about dogs have hit the bestseller lists and captured the hearts of readers everywhere.

■ With more than 78 million dogs owned in the united States, and americans spending over $40 billion a year on their pets, dog owners represent a very substantial market.

■ dachshunds are consistently in the top 10 of america’s most popular dog breeds.

■ Matt ziselman is a creative director at Sapient, the world’s largest independent marketing company.

JOHN C. MAxWELL

Derived from the author’s seminal bestseller, The 5 Levels of Leadership, this condensed version shares the essential five stages of every leader.

Following the format of the author’s previous successful derivatives, How Successful People Think and Make Today Count, this pocket-sized abridgement of The 5 Levels of Leadership will reveal how successful leaders grow. It details the five critical stages:

Position—People follow because they have to

Permission—People follow because they want to

Production—People follow because of what you have done for the organization.

People Development—People follow because of what you have done for them personally

Pinnacle—People follow because of who you are and what you represent

For each level, readers will learn the upsides and downsides, and how to master one level and move up to the next.

•The 5 Levels of Leadership (Center Street, 4/11) marked Maxwell’s major title return to Center Street. It was a Wall Street Journal bestseller and has sold more than 100,000 copies to date. The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth releases from Center Street in 10/12.

•With more than 21 million books sold, John C. Maxwell is considered the world’s most popular author on leadership.

•Maxwell’s derivatives from Center Street have been suc-cessful. Make Today Count (6/08, a derivative of Today Matters), has sold more than 180,000 copies, and How Successful People Think (6/09, a derivative of Thinking For a Change), has sold more than 315,000 copies.

•Maxwell speaks to more than 350,000 people each year and has communicated his principles to Fortune 100 companies, the United States Military Academy at West Point, international marketing organizations, the NCAA, and professional sports groups such as the NFL.

shADoWBosses Government Unions Control America and Rob Taxpayers Blind

MALLORy FACTOR WITH ELIZABETH FACTOR

An electrifying exposé of employee unions’ assault on government—and of the grave danger they pose to American democracy itself.

This story of intrigue, drama, and corruption reads like an organized crime novel, but it’s the true story of how labor unions are infiltrating government and corrupting the politi-cal process. It exposes how unions organize federal, state, and local government workers without their consent, and how these government employee unions are a threat to work-ers’ freedoms, free and fair elections, the rule of law, and the American way of life.

In SHADOWBOSSES, readers will discover:• How the union movement is now driven by government

employee unions and how our association of unions with impoverished Norma Rae and miners fighting for safer working conditions is hopelessly out of date

• How the teachers’ unions control what goes on in the class-room in all 50 states and are letting our most precious re-sources—our children—fall behind the rest of the world

• How government employee unions forcibly collect billions in dues income which they use to elect politicians to do their bidding

• Why workers who get forced into unions have very little chance of getting out

•Mallory Factor reaches millions of Americans through his regular appearances on FOX News, FOX Business, and frequent talk radio appearances. He also speaks regularly at national conferences including the American Conservative Union’s CPAC conference. Author publicity for the hardcover included Fox & Friends, Hannity, Rachel Maddow, Huckabee, and Forbes.

•Factor is the co-founder and co-leader of the decade-old Monday Meeting, an influential group of economic conservative journalists, donors, think tank heads, politi-cal leaders, and grassroots leaders in New york City and Charleston, South Carolina.

•Mallory Factor holds the John C. West Chair of American Government at The Citadel, South Carolina’s military college.

A liFe ThAT mATTersTransforming Faces, Renewing Lives

KENNETH E. SALyER, MD

Inspiring stories from the surgeon who has trans-formed children’s faces—and lives—by his ground-breaking surgical procedures, and transformed himself in the process.

Dr. Kenneth E. Salyer surveys the landscape of his 40-year career as a surgeon, relaying the moving stories of the children who initially inspired him to found the World Craniofacial Foundation. His memoir chronicles the pio-neering efforts that led to today’s clinics across the globe and offer the hope of a good life to hundreds of poor chil-dren in still developing countries who might otherwise be shunned, isolated, or abandoned. In a voice that’s compel-ling, eloquent, and always impassioned, Dr. Salyer issues a call for a new worldwide understanding of the terribly disfigured, and he encourages readers to take inspiration from these children as they endeavor to transform their own challenges into triumphs. “Possessing a face you aren’t forced to hide is a fundamental human right,” he says, “as important to a fully lived life as freedom from fear or want.”

•Kenneth E. Salyer, MD, is an internationally recognized plastic surgeon and pioneer in craniofacial surgery. He is the founder of the International Craniofacial Institute, the Cleft Lip and Palate Treatment Center, and World Craniofacial Foundation.

•Dr. Salyer has been a guest expert on national television shows, including The Oprah Winfrey Show, Today, Good Morning America, The Les Brown Show, and Dateline NBC. His groundbreaking work has been featured on the front page of the New York Times and in a cover story in Parade.

•This book will be available just in time for National Cleft and Craniofacial Awareness and Prevention Month in July.

John Tournour, known to his listeners and fans as JT The Brick, is one of the biggest sports radio personalities in the country. Making it as a sports radio host is no easy feat, but JT brought his token fire and determination, leaving a fast-paced life (not to mention six-figure salary) as a Merrill Lynch stockbroker behind to chase his dream of, well, shouting about sports on the radio. He eventually went from paying for airtime to being in hot demand. It seemed like there were not enough hours in a day to broadcast his booming catchphrase: “OUT OF THE GATE… IT’S JT THE BRICK! SOUND OFF LIKE YOU’VE GOT A PAIR!” But the transformation did not happen by itself. Tournour owes much of his success to his close friend and mentor, Andrew Ashwood, who first called a young, boundlessly energetic JT during his show at 3 a.m. and promptly sent him his playbook, a spiral-bound, loose-leaf notebook full of tips and tricks for a budding sports talk radio host. So, after years of priceless advice and an even more price-less friendship, Tournour’s most difficult challenge would come when Ashwood was diagnosed with cancer.

In this truly moving memoir, JT recounts his wild ride to sports radio stardom and shares his thoughts on how his entire view of life changed after becoming Ashwood’s chemo-therapy partner and witnessing his closest friend fight a losing battle to a devastating disease. JT’s story is ultimately about the power of connection and the importance of friendship—lessons Tournour learned from a very dear friend.

Full of honest, raw storytelling that will capture readers’ hearts at a breakneck speed, THE HAND-OFF is a crash course in what really matters in life.

GovernmenT BulliesHow Everyday Americans are Being Harassed, Abused, and Imprisoned by the Feds

SENATOR RAND PAUL FOREWORD By RON PAUL

Now in paperback, United States Senator Rand Paul’s investigation into out-of-control government regulations.

Mothers arrested for buying raw milk. Farmers restrained from moving dirt on their own property. Families fined for selling bunny rabbits without a license. As Senator Rand Paul sees it, government regulation and bureaucratic red tape are running amok in Washington, and honest tax- paying citizens are the victims of an administration’s misuse and abuse of power. Now, Rand Paul, the senator from Kentucky, takes an in-depth look at the recent legislation that is strangling the ability of ordinary citizens’ rights to conduct the most com-mon, everyday activities without nosy government interfer-ence. He highlights outrageous searches, seizures and ar-rests, and points to thousands of regulations that have been added to the books since Obama took office. Most impor-tantly, he points to a direction out of this mess, and toward renewed freedom for all Americans.

•Rand Paul’s first book, The Tea Party Goes to Washington, was published in February 2011 and hit the Los Angeles Times bestseller list. It received widespread media attention and Paul appeared on Good Morning America, Nightline, Late Show with David Letterman, Fox & Friends, and The Sean Hannity Show.

•Senator Paul continues to be at the forefront of political conversation, often making headlines for his fight against big government. He was highly visible on the Presidential campaign trail for his father, Congressman Ron Paul, and his own name has been mentioned numerous times as a potential future presidential candidate.
