Gregory Teas, MD Chief Medical Officer,

AMITA Health Behavioral Medicine Institute

All of us at AMITA Health Behavioral Medicine look forward to a great year of professional education. For our spring session, we’ll offer 20 workshops in 10 locations, including Hoffman Estates, Aurora, Hinsdale, La Grange, Westmont, Joliet, Bolingbrook and Chicago.

Our January workshops will be held in Aurora, Hinsdale and Hoffman Estates. We’ll tackle successful parenting tactics, trauma sensitive interventions, LGBTQ student supports, and best practices for working with petitions for involuntary admission. The Aurora workshops, located at our behavioral health care site on the campus of Mercy Medical Center, will be free of charge.

We’ll kick off our February workshops at NIU Hoffman Estates with four of our resident experts discussing “Interventions in the School Setting: Tools and Strategies for Today’s Youth.” Later in the month, Dr. Tom Phelan, author of 1,2,3 Magic will present material from his bestselling book and discuss ADHD. Workshops in La Grange, Joliet, and Chicago will look at exposure and response prevention, maintaining mental health on the front lines, and psychiatric emergencies with Dr. Fabian Carbonell.

Dr. Phillip Mehler, CEDS will join us from ACUTE in Denver in March to discuss “Pearls and Myths in the Medical Evaluation of Patients with Eating Disorders.” Dr. Mehler is internationally recognized as a pioneer and researcher in the area of eating disorders with hundreds of publications. Also in March, we have a group of our professionals presenting on how to engage the arts to promote healing, which will be held at The Community House in Hinsdale.

In April, we have the popular Mary Jo Barrett presenting her workshop on “What to Do When Things Get Messy,” which focuses on working with couples and families who have experienced trauma and the responses we have as therapists. Dr. Patrick McGrath will present advanced techniques in the treatment of OCD at NIU Hoffman Estates. And Dr. Sarah Briley will present her workshop on “Understanding Substance Abuse Disorders” in Aurora. In late April and May, we’re featuring Dr. Sahib Gill in Westmont, Mark Sanders at NIU Hoffman Estates, and Amy Gjesdahl and Blodgett Dycus in Bolingbrook. Finally, our LCPC supervision series with Dr. Toni Tollerud will be offered throughout the spring on Saturdays at NIU/Hoffman Estates.

As introduced last fall, we’ll continue to provide electronic check-in and evaluations at many of our workshops. This has helped to expedite the process. We hope many of you were able to access this new platform on your phone or tablet.

We appreciate your continuing support of the workshops presented through AMITA Health Behavioral Medicine. We value our community partnerships and hope we continue to be your first choice in continuing education.

Sincerely, Steve Hunter, LCSW, LMFT Director, Business Development, AMITA Health Behavioral Medicine Institute

Description Ever get stuck on ideas of what to do with your anxious patients? This talk will review the basic ERP exercises to do with patients for each of the anxiety disorders they experience. This will not be an overview of the disorders, but an overview of the therapy techniques that are most helpful to challenge the disorders. Familiarity with anxiety disorders, therefore, will be helpful with this talk, as we will not be spending time on the diagnostic features of the disorders, but solely on the treatment of them.

Program Objectives Participants will:

• Develop a tool kit of ERP techniques to use for anxious patients.

• Practice utilizing various ERP techniques as a group to learn the best ways to deliver ERP.

• Review ways to get unstuck in therapy sessions when ERP appears to not be working or when you need to think out of the box.

Description The perinatal period provides unique opportunities to identify and intervene with the co-occurrence of perinatal depression and intimate partner violence (IPV). Domestic violence in the perinatal period is associated with adverse obstetric outcomes. High levels of symptoms of perinatal depression, anxiety, and PTSD are significantly associated with having experienced domestic violence. Psychosocial screening recommended for women seen in maternal child health settings can and should be used to screen for multiple risk factors, including perinatal mental health complications and domestic violence. This program will address the intersection of Perinatal Mental Health and Domestic Violence and increase awareness in opportunities to screen for both in private practice, hospital and community settings. This program will also educate and provide local, community and non-for profit resources for mothers experiencing both perinatal mental health and domestic violence issues.

Do they yell at you, insult you, or leave the session? Are there times you find yourself getting angry at your clients? Do you recognize your own flight, fight, and/or freeze response? Welcome to the messy, often confusing world of trauma treatment. In this workshop, you’ll explore practical in-session techniques as well as a framework to help you recognize what’s happening when things heat up and get intense. Trauma-Informed Supervision: Strategies to Avoid Burnout Therapists who work with populations experiencing high levels of trauma need intentional supervision that will help them address the complex issues of their clients as well as how they may be reacting psychologically and emotionally in the situations. Supervisors have a responsibility to assess these reactions in the supervisee, and, if necessary, to offer strategies and referrals that will maintain wellness and effectiveness. This workshop will review the critical factors of a trauma-informed system of care and how supervisors can infuse this into their clinical supervision. It will explore theoretical approaches to trauma-informed supervision including a reflective supervision model. Additionally, participants will consider trauma within the intersectionality of gender, race, and class, and how it needs to align with the mission of social justice. Finally, participants will review the psychoeducational aspects of vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue, and look at evidence-based strategies to promote self-care and wellness with supervisees.

Learning Objectives:

As a result of participating in this workshop, professionals will:

• Review the critical factors of a trauma-informed system of care and how this informs clinical supervision.

• Develop a comprehensive understanding of the effects and complexity of trauma, its potential behavioral manifestations and best practices to address the needs of clients.

• Understand and recognize trauma as interpersonal and sociopolitical agent in supervision.

• Consider the intersectionality of gender, race, and class, in the creation of a trauma-informed system of care and how this needs to align with the mission of social justice in clinical supervision.

• Analyze how reflective supervision can be used to reduce re-traumatization and reinforce personal integrity.

• Review strategies used in supervision to reduce burnout and address compassion fatigue.
