LEAH CHAN GRINVALD ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF LAW
Students in our J.D. program have the opportunity to earn a Concentration in International and Comparative Law, giving students a broad foundation in international law within the context of a well-rounded legal education.
Each semester, SLU LAW offers a variety of international and comparative law courses and seminars. Periodically, visiting international professors supplement the course offerings with two-credit intensive courses in specialized international and comparative law subjects. Credits received in the summer abroad program in Madrid and the study abroad programs in France, Ireland and Switzerland count toward the concentration requirements. Generally, students are required to complete the three-credit International Law course, seven additional international and comparative law credits and a writing requirement.
EARN A CONCENTRATION
INTERNATIONAL LAW STuDENTS’ ASSOCIATION The International Law Students’ Association (ILSA) is the international voice of the students at SLU LAW. Programs focus on academic and social interests as well as career goals. The overriding purpose of ILSA is to promote awareness and knowledge of international legal matters. ILSA’s activities include a speakers program and social events with an international flavor.
PHILIP C. JESSuP INTERNATIONAL LAW MOOT COuRT COMPETITION Students in this competition brief and argue a hypothetical case on timely issues of international law before a moot International Court of Justice. Each spring, a team from SLU LAW competes at the Super Regional. The top two teams from that competition proceed to the international round of competition in Washington, D.C., to compete against teams from 12 U.S. regions and 50 foreign countries.
MAKE CONNECTIONS
Through its educational programs and scholarly activities, the Center for International and Comparative Law ensures that its graduates have the education they need to pursue professional opportunities throughout the world. The Center builds networks and alliances locally and internationally, making SLU LAW a Midwestern gateway for legal scholarship in international and comparative law.
For more than 30 years, SLU LAW has ensured that graduates from our programs are prepared for and sensitive to international social and economic legal issues.

Access to international practitioners and numerous study abroad options give the students the opportunity to explore diverse career paths within the field of international and comparative law, including immigration law, international business law, international criminal law, human rights law and admiralty.
CAREER OPPORTuNITIES
“I think that this program opened up more
opportunities for me, especially in this economy.
Not only can I focus my work on immigration
law, but I really enjoy working in academia. By
studying abroad in Germany while in law school,
I got a sense of how it is for new students and
scholars who come to the U.S. to study.”

SuMMER PROGRAMS
MADRIDThe ABA-approved Summer Law Program in Madrid builds on the Center’s strong comparative and international law focus by offering up to six credit hours of law courses taught by
Spanish legal scholars and professors from SLU LAW. Classes are held at Saint Louis University’s
STuDY ABROADown Madrid campus. Classroom instruction is in English, and the program includes site visits to various Spanish courts. The program allows students to experience Spanish culture while expanding their knowledge of international and comparative law. In addition, students in the program’s International Criminal Law course will observe proceedings at the International Criminal Court and the International Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague, Netherlands, immediately following the program.
Students are eligible to participate in other ABA-accredited summer study abroad programs. Contact CICL early in the spring semester to explore these opportunities.
HuMAN RIGHTS SuMMER INTERNSHIPS IN SOuTHEAST ASIA In cooperation with Bridges Across Borders Southeast Asia, an international, nonprofit, non-governmental organization, students may participate in a summer volunteer fellowship program. Students are stationed in Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia or Laos. Working with local attorneys, students participate in a variety of transitional justice and community legal education initiatives.
SuMMER RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP
GERMANYThe Ruhr-University in Bochum, Germany, offers research fellowships to Saint Louis University law students and new law faculty. Each fellowship covers a period of up to three months at the Ruhr-University. This fellowship is available to students with a sufficient command of the German language.
SEMESTER STuDY AT FOREIGN INSTITuTIONS
FRANCEStudents at SLU LAW with strong French language skills have the opportunity to study law at the Université d’Orléans or the Université Paris-Dauphine. The exchange programs present exceptional opportunities for students to experience French culture and French law. The Dauphine exchange also allows J.D. graduates of SLU LAW to apply to return to Paris after completing their J.D. degrees in order to complete the master’s degree. The master’s degree makes the successful student eligible to sit for the French bar exam upon completion of an apprenticeship in France.
IRELAND At the University College Cork, Ireland, a small number of SLU LAW students may spend a semester in Ireland and receive credit toward their J.D. degree while gaining insight into European and international law.
SWITZERLANDAt the University of Bern, Switzerland, students may spend a semester in Switzerland and receive credit toward their J.D. degree while gaining insight into European and international law. Students attending the University of Bern may choose from courses offered in English, or if they have adequate command of French or German, they can enroll in courses taught in those languages at the University of Fribourg or the University of Bern, respectively.
Once a student’s first 30 hours of law school are complete, they can pursue a study abroad experience. Through agreements with international institutions, law students can choose among several unique programs to explore different cultures and legal systems.
