INTRODUCTION
This monitoring report is to satisfy the requirements under the Protection of the Environment Legislation Amendment
Act 2011 (POELA Act) to publish or make pollution monitoring data available to members of the public.
This document also satisfies condition 7 schedule 5 of Project Approval 10_0038, this report summarises
environmental monitoring results for Awaba Colliery for the period of February 2017.

SURFACE WATER QUALITY
The following parameters Electrical Conductivity (EC µs/cm), Oil and Grease (mg/L), pH and Total Suspended Solids
(TSS mg/L) are monitored at Licenced Discharge Point 1 – 9 during discharge in accordance with the requirements of
Environmental Protection Licence 443.
There were no discharges from Awaba licenced discharge points during the reporting period.
5
WATER VOLUME
Water volume discharged off site is measured through licenced discharge points (LDPs) 1 to 9. Environment
Protection Licences (EPLs) set limits on the maximum volume of water to be discharged for a given period.
The volume limits for EPL443 Licenced Discharge Points are listed in Table 3.

AIR QUALITY MONITORING
The air quality monitoring results for the reporting period are summarised below. There is no limit criteria for the air
quality monitoring required under EPL443.
Depositional Dust
Depositional dust (g/m2/mth) results (insoluble solids) for February 2017 are shown in Table 5.

c - Contaminated
June – DG3 recorded a reading of 5.8g/m2/month. 75% of the dust was vegetation matter including
insect/plant remains, 10% was made up of clay dirt material and 10% coal. Due to the high vegetation
content of the sample, DG3 is considered to be contaminated and has been excluded from the results.
6
September – DG3 recorded a reading of 6.3g/m2/month. 60% of the dust was vegetation matter including
insect/plant remains, 30% was made up of clay dirt material and 10% coal. Due to the high vegetation
content of the sample, DG3 is considered to be contaminated and has been excluded from the results.
October – DG3 recorded a reading of 4.1g/m2/month. 60% of the dust was vegetation matter including
insect/plant remains and polysaccharide slime, 30% was made up of clay dirt material and 10% coal.
January – DG2 recorded dust deposition of 4.1 g/m2/month. 80% of the dust was vegetation matter including
insect/plant remains and polysaccharide slime, 20% was made up of clay dirt material and <5% coal fines.
February – DG3 recorded a reading of 4.7g/m2/month. 65% of the dust was vegetation matter including
insect/plant remains and polysaccharide slime, 35% was made up of clay dirt material and <5% coal fines.
It is noted that the coal stockpile at the Awaba pit top has been removed and rehabilitated.
Depositional dust monitoring data indicates that dust deposition results for February range from 1.8 g/m2/month to 4.4
g/m2/month. A graphical representation of depositional dust monitoring data is shown in Figure 1.
Figure 1. Monthly Dust Deposition Gauge Results
The Awaba Colliery Development Consent 10_0038 contains the following criteria for dust;
Annual average maximum total deposited dust level of 4 g/m2/month.
Maximum increase in Annual Average deposited dust level, 2 g/m2/month.
The rolling annual averages for each of the dust gauges in February 2017 are shown in table 4 and Figure 2 below.

High Volume Air Sampling (HVAS)
High volume air samplers monitor particulate concentrations (less than 10 micrometres in size [PM10] and Total
Suspended Particulates [TSP]). A summary of monitoring results for January is provided below. At the time of
reporting for the February report the HVAS samples had not yet been received by the lab.

NOISE MONITORING
EPL443 was varied on the 16th December 2015 with the provision to remove regular noise monitoring from the Licence
due to no activity at the Awaba pit top. The EPA however has added a condition that Noise Monitoring recommence a
month before any mining or significant surface operation activities are undertaken on the premises.
