Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Access

CEN Impact Story I Executive Summary

5

We are proud to have brought the topic of race equity, diversity, accessibility, and inclusion to the table in all that we do. Here is what CEN has done in this space over the last three years:

• In 2017, guided by BoardSource's 'Leading with Intent' data/materials, we began to evaluate our board representation compared to the communities we serve and our governance committee and board members worked with our executive director to push forward, plan, and increase the diversity in our organization at every level

• Our staff, in 2017, was 100% white and we now (September 2020) have nearly 60% representation from people of color, which will continue to grow with multiple new hires this fiscal year (FY 20-21)

• The CEN Board, in 2017, had only 20% representation from people of color and now, at 60% representation from people of color, accurately reflects the communities we serve - including a more diverse age group, depth of skill-sets, and knowledge essential for deep governing work

• In the last two years, we have intentionally reached out to diverse communities and have worked with more leaders (and emerging leaders) of color than any time in our organization's 25-year history

• We came out strongly in support of the Black Lives Matter movement• Our amazing staff, with their vast experience, have brought an equity lens and fostered deep, authentic discussions in this space to all

our offerings, services, and curriculum• Most recently, we are very proud to have started a roundtable for Leaders of Color, creating a powerful, safe space to share and discuss

challenges and experiences• As a staff, we continually participate in training and attend events that promote and focus on this work• CEN is providing well vetted resources and information in this space, as well as sharing them on social media to help educate others

2020 Response to COVID-19 Pandemic

CEN Impact Story I Executive Summary

CEN's First Virtual Board Meeting in May 2020

6

• Virtual roundtables to give leaders a chance to connect with peers, problem solve, share resources and support one another through challenges and crisis. We increased the frequency of these meetings to twice a month due to the needs regarding the Pandemic

• Online courses (not watered-down webinars) offering fundamental management teaching with a deep focus on crisis and change management, crisis communication, self-care and contingency planning

• A well-vetted resource page covering staff needs, mental health and self-care, fundraising, emergency funds, planning tools, communication best practice, leadership, and board/legal resources

• A high volume of 1:1 free consulting to help nonprofits problem solve in these new realities• Roundtable for leaders of color (launched with an increased sense of urgency due to growing reports of

COVID-19 racism) to support leaders as they navigate unique challenges in their communities• Connections with leadership of the seven counties we work in to advocate on behalf of our sector• A support system to help our leaders navigate PPP funding and seek guidance to protect employees• Partnerships with additional content experts to offer additional support• Increased membership accessibility with discounts and scholarships

“Thank you for providing these sessions and resources. They are helping me cope at this difficult time and enhancing my ability to lead.”

In response to COVID-19, we moved programs online, offering virtual training that merges fundamental best practice with crisis management and opportunities for peer-to-peer connections and support. Additionally, we offered discounts and payment plans to make our offerings increasingly accessible.

By April 2020, we'd increased program frequency and established the following:

Leaders Institute Overview

CEN Impact Story I Leaders Institute

An eight-month long intensive leadership development opportunity, held annually, serving around 15 Bay Area nonprofit EDs/CEOs. This established program was built on tested curriculum that can easily be put into practice at any organization. Participants graduate with a strong support network and techniques/resources needed to sustain an effective organization.

"Even if you don't think you need this, you need it. After 21 years of

nonprofit work, I found this program to be a phenomenal capstone and would rival any program I would engage in at Stanford or Harvard.

This is an incredibly special opportunity to invest in yourself and go there. The time I invested in this

program has been a worthy and valuable investment and I am

grateful for the support, kinship, training, and coaching I received."

Our Nonprofit Leadership Certificate course has been offered as both a 13-week course and (most popular) a 3-day intensive boot camp, now online

CEN’s Nonprofit Leadership Certificate Boot Camp was launched in FY 2015-16 and grew 300% by FY 2018-19. In FY 2019-20, thanks to funding for our Bay Area Nonprofit Capacity Building Initiative, we took this valuable program to the next level by significantly bolstering curriculum, including a team component, and adding an online version in response to COVID-19.

Skill-Building Workshops

CEN Impact Story I Skill-Building Workshops

CEN offers a wide range of skill-building workshops for nonprofit executives, staff members, and board leaders. These small group workshops are designed to feel more like a personal consulting session than a routine training opportunity and often have limited space. Participants have ample time to interact with CEN’s highly trained facilitators and walk away with the resources and templates needed to implement learning in their organizations right away.

"CEN's ED Transition training was perhaps the most useful training I've ever attended. It was interesting,

engaging, and extremely practical."

"The Nonprofit Board Essentials presentation was well organized and informative. It gave our board

vital information regarding policies, procedures, and how we can create and maintain a healthy board."

Since the July 2016 launch, we’ve hosted 105 Skill- Building Workshopswhich have served 1099 registrants from nearly 350 organizations.

17

194 of the registrants attended multiple sessions (for a total of 477 repeated registrations)

This year, the number of nonprofits served increased but individual registrations dipped in March because of COVID-19 challenges preventing orgs from sending teams. We retooled curriculum and offered payment plans to increase accessibility and by June 2020 saw growth.

Over 98% of participants

agreed the information they gained will help them improve the effectiveness

of their organization.

Some of the most prevalent ways we see participants apply their learning include:

• Use of working styles, team charters, and agendas= More productive teams & increased impact

• Improvements to board structure and strategies to increase board involvement in fundraising

= Engaged boards and more dollars raised• Increased understanding of nonprofit financials

= Better business decisions -- sustainability

Nonprofit Consulting

CEN Impact Story I Nonprofit Consulting

In our consulting work, it is CEN’s deeply held commitment to work as partners with the organization receiving our services. We approach our work in an open and supportive manner to ensure that the people and organizations we are serving feel valued and included. As we move through assessment and trainings with an organization, we do this with a collaborative style that invites all parties’ participation and experiences. We cover a variety of topics from board development, to nonprofit management best practices, to fundraising, and so much more. Additionally, our staff are well versed and comfortable in cultural competency, increasing the already high effectiveness of our work. We believe that our role is to empower the recipients of our work and often learn as much as we teach.

“CEN is an incredible resource and thought partner for nonprofits that struggle with resources and space for this kind of training."

20

“This really will help me develop and approach different situations as I progress in my career path.”

"Walked away with an awesome toolkit and great framework for putting it to use. Highly recommended!"

ED/CEO Roundtables

CEN Impact Story I ED/CEO Roundtables

Our unique monthly forum in which nonprofit chief executives come together for lunch and to share experiences, challenges, solutions, and best practices. Each cohort meets for six months or more to deepen connections and build a community of support.

"COVID-19 and its widespread impacts have made a tough job even tougher. But I have found invaluable support at CEN's roundtable gatherings. Nonprofit leaders share stories from the front

lines, funding ideas, leadership strategies and — perhaps most importantly! — laughter, and I always find comfort in the reminder that we are all in this together."

23

CEN launched our first roundtable series for nonprofit EDs/CEOs of color in May 2020. As the COVID-19 pandemic compounded the unique challenges that leaders of color regularly face - consistent roadblocks to accessing funding and other resources, as well as a lack of inclusion, diversity, and equity - CEN is dedicated to providing a resource to connect with other leaders of color to share experiences, challenges, solutions, and support.
