Cell division: Mitosis
Grade 10Written by: kamohelo mahlatsi
cell division Is the process by which a parent cell
divides into two or more daughter cells.
It usually occurs as part of a larger cell cycle.
The daughter cells are genetically identical to each other and to the mother cell.
Mitosis Is a process by which new cells are generated.
It is a fundamental process for life.
During mitosis, a cell duplicates all of its contents, including its chromosomes, and splits to form two identical daughter cells.
Because this process is so critical, the steps of mitosis are carefully controlled by a number of genes.
When mitosis is not regulated correctly, health problems such as cancer can result.
Chromosome structure
The process of mitosisCell cycle is broken down into six stages:
1. Interphase
In preparation for the division of the nucleus, DNA replicates so that the genetic material is doubled in the chromatin network.
2. Prophase
The chromatin network unwinds to form visible chromosomes. Each chromosome is made up of two identical parts called chromatids.
The centrioles form and move toward opposite ends of the cell.
3. Metaphase
The chromosomes arrange themselves along the middle of the cell, attached to spindle fibres.
Centrioles move to the poles.
4. Telophase
Each chromosome splits and its two chromatids are pulled apart towards opposite ends of the cell.
The chromosome decondense.
The nuclear envelope forms.
5. Cytokinesis Two groups of chromosomes occur- one at each
end of the cell.
Thus we have two nuclei within which we have the same number and kind of chromosomes as the original.
The cytoplasm divides, forming two identical cells.
The importance of mitosismitosis forms new cells which may be used for:
Growth in size of an organism.
Repair and replacement of worn out damaged cells.
It brings about asexual and vegetative reproduction in certain plants and animals.
