700 origami paper cranes were folded by Middle School

students to raise money for earthquake and tsunami victims in Japan.

For the third consecutive year, faculty and staff reached 100% participation in Annual Giving.

One senior was a semifinalist in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. She was one of 14 students from Virginia named a semifinalist and just two from the Richmond area.

More than 4,000 hours of community service

were completed by the members of the Class of 2011.

A record 909 girls made the

2010-11 school year one to remember.

The Saints won $500 for the highest percentage

of Upper School students registered for the

One 9th grader served as a House of Delegates head page during

More than 300 alumnae from the Classes of

1936 to 2006 attended 2011 Reunion Weekend events.

80% of parents participated in Annual Giving.

Middle School Eighth Notes were awarded a rating of EXCELLENT and the MS Choir was awarded a rating of SUPERIOR, the highest rating possible, at the Busch Gardens Music in the Parks Festival. The OVERALL VOCALIST MEDAL at the Middle School level was awarded to a St. Catherine’s student.

3 Silver Keys were awarded to Upper Schools girls in the national Scholastic Art and Writing competition.

2 Saints were named to the junior indoor field hockey national team and one to the USA U-17 national field hockey team.

One student’s wearable art creation was recognized

by the VIRGINIA MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS.

18 students performed in the 2010 Richmond

Ballet production of the Nutcracker.

The Upper School Robotics team won the Central Virginia Qualifying Event. In its debut, the Middle School Robotics team earned 1st place at the regional contest and one middle schooler advanced to the FIRST World Championship. The Grade 4-5 Lego Robotics Team was awarded a Judges’ Award for Strong Performance in All Areas of Competition.

More than 150 coats were donated for

local families through Coats for Kids.

2 Upper Schoolers represented St. Catherine’s at the Senior Regional Orchestra while 5 Middle School students represented the School at the Central Regional Orchestra event.

900 POUNDS OF RECYCLED MATERIAL was gathered

by Lower School students over the course of four weeks.

The new outdoor classroom for Junior Kindergarten,

an innovative concept unique to the Richmond area,

incorporates research about the relationship of

children with the natural world and observations of

the way children actually play outdoors.

Saints athletes received 42 ALL-STATE and 64 ALL-LIS HONORS.

Lower School girls gathered more than $4,000 worth of dog supplies—food, leashes, toys, treats, dog beds, bowls,

crates, etc.—for local rescue organizations.

The Lower School Choir competed in the

30th Annual Busch Gardens Music in the

Parks Festival on Saturday, May 14, 2011.

They were awarded a rating of SUPERIOR

and received the 1ST PLACE Elementary

School Treble Choir trophy and the Overall

Elementary School Choir trophy.

One sophomore finished second at the regional Poetry Out Loud competition to advance to the state competition.

Upper School Director Cathy McGehee was

awarded a M.Ed. from the University of Richmond

in Educational Leadership and Public Policy.

Upper School Science Teacher Ryan Warren was awarded a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Virginia Commonwealth University. His dissertation was entitled “Synthesis, Characterization, and Functionalization of Magnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles for Enhanced Biological Applications.”

The 2010 Quair won the Balfour Yearbooks

NATIONAL AWARD FOR PHOTOGRAPHY.

Parents and grandparents of the Class of 2011

raised more than $716,000 to support the

capital campaign. In recognition of this gift, the

new Dining Hall addition will be named in honor

of the class. Lilo and Scott Ukrop, parents of Polly

Ukrop '11, and a committee of ten families led the

gift effort to 98% participation.

15 FACULTY AND STAFF MEMBERS PRESENTED

at 13 different workshops or conferences including

events in Maine and Mexico.

The Class of 2011 received 223 acceptances to colleges

and universities throughout the nation and Scotland—that's an

average of 3.78 acceptances per graduate.

7 ATHLETES IN THE CLASS OF 2011 will compete

in college sports at University of Richmond (2), UCLA,

Rollins, William & Mary, Davidson and Washington & Lee.

5 SENIORS and one St. Christopher’s senior

performed in the ANNUAL SENIOR DANCE RECITAL. Each dancer choreographed and

performed in two routines. The senior creates

one group routine and selects her/his dancers,

music, costumes and lighting. The other routine

is either a solo or a duet.

It was a record-setting, championship-winning, almost unprecedented

year for St. Catherine’s athletics. The Saints varsity teams won a total

of 7 LIS championships and 5 state titles. Athletes received 45 All State

Honors and 64 All LIS Honors. 9 Saints coaches were named LIS Coach

of the Year in their respective sports.

One alumna inspired the St. Catherine’s community and people

around the globe to raise more than $125,000. Taylor Anderson

’04 was living the School Motto as a teacher in Japan when her life

was cut short by the tsunami this past March. The Taylor Anderson

’04 Memorial Gift Fund was established in her memory.

Grandparents’ & Special Friends’ Day

In June, Elizabeth Cabell Jennings ’81 completed 15 years of board service, the last five of which were as Chair of the Board of Governors. The mother of three Saints, Elizabeth led St. Catherine’s during a period of tremendous growth and was an inexhaustible volunteer and an eloquent advocate for the School. We are tremendously grateful for her service.

The Lower School gathered in late May to bid a fond farewell to retiring Director Margaret Bloor. After receiving a number of tributes, Margaret was surprised by the announcement that a new Lower School playground, named in her honor, will be constructed this summer. Margaret and her husband Dave were also honored as recipients of the 2011 Adelaide Rawles Flippen ’30 Outstanding Service Award for their combined 63 years of service to the School.

ST. CATHERINE’S DAY

Gifts were received from our school family, across the nation

and a variety of countries, including Japan. St. Catherine’s students

sold bracelets, including Taylor’s initials and an excerpt of the School

Motto. Lower School students donated proceeds from Make A

Change Mondays and a portion of the proceeds from the Joni Spring

concert was donated to match a variety of other on-campus efforts.

Working closely with the Anderson family, preparations are

underway to establish Taylor Anderson Reading Corners for the

Japanese schools in which Taylor worked. Funds will also benefit

rebuilding efforts for Japanese schools and children in an effort to

continue her legacy in the country she loved so much.

In recognition of her service to St. Catherine’s, our new independent research lab in the Upper School science facility will be named for departing Head of School Laura Fuller. Laura championed St. Catherine’s effort to position itself as a leader in science education and introduced several curricular changes, such as the STEM (Science Technology Engineering

and Mathmatics) program and Physics First. A plaque, bearing Laura’s name, will hang in the new space when it opens in the fall of 2012.

“This space is the culmination of a dream I have had for years to provide high school age students with the important research skills they will need to enter successfully the study of collegiate science,” Laura said.

will add new labs and update existing ones

with the most advanced learning models

available. The additional space will create new

opportunities to expand our science program
