Learning with Grace

Sunday Adult Bible Study (Frank & Sue’s Class)

Join Frank & Sue in the Library each Sunday from 9:45 ‐ 10:45 a.m., and connect the Bible to your life. All are welcome!

The Gift of Faith

This quarter engages texts from the Gospels of Mark and Luke to consider themes of faith. The four sessions follow Easter and are based on texts from Luke. These sessions explore the faith of a Gentile, the faith of a repentant woman whose sins are forgiven, the authority of Jesus who heals a Gerasene man, and a parable of God’s extravagant forgiveness. One of Luke’s fa‐vorite themes – Jesus’ concern for outcasts and sinners – is shown throughout the narratives. Lesson 5 April 3 The Faith of a Gentile Luke 7:1‐10 Lesson 6 April 10 Jesus Forgives Sins Luke 7:36‐50 Lesson 7 April 17 Jesus Has Authority Luke 8:26‐36 Lesson 8 April 24 The Forgiving Father Luke 15:11‐24

Second Sunday Pastor’s Class A New Beginning

Pastor Wendell’s Second Sunday Class has, as of March 13, finished its discussion of the Lisa Dahill book, Truly Present. A new direction is planned for the rest of the school year. The offer‐ings will be on different topics. We will be looking at a Bible overview and also other religions. The intention of the Bible overview is to cover the whole Bible in one session. We will look at the Bible from a bird’s eye view, summarizing the major themes and aspects of the whole work. We will also be hosting speakers from other religions, especially the Corvallis Muslim and Jew‐ish communities, as they are available. If you have other suggestions, just mention them to Pastor Wendell. This class meets between worship services in Ronnenkamp Hall usually on the Second Sunday, but making allowances for other opportunities.

Back to 1 Corinthians

Following a two week Holy Week/Easter break, we resume our weekly study of 1 Corinthians on April 5th. It’s not possible to study this letter to the church in Corinth without discussing issues of sexuality pertinent to the community at that time and pertinent to us today. Thus, even if you are not able to join us on Tuesdays, you may be interested in looking at a resource to which we have referred that’s available to you online. It is the summary of the ELCA Social Statement, “Human Sexuality: Gift and Trust.” It is a 3 ½ page summary of the 44 page social statement passed at the 2009 ELCA Churchwide Assembly. If interested, the full document is available through the ELCA website, www.elca.org The summary is available to you by clicking on the link below which will bring it up, or you may request a printed copy from Pastor Netsie. http://download.elca.org/ELCA%20Resource%20Repository/SexualitySS_Summary.pdf?_ga=1.256335499.1614722847.1420484402

Join us on Tuesdays from 1:00‐2:30 pm in the Fireside Room for lively discussions and mean‐ingful study. You are welcome to join us for the whole time, or as your schedule allows.

14 April 2nd Thursday's Women's Luncheon will be at El Sol de Mexico (on 9th) at 11:45am 26 April 4th Tuesday’s Women’s Luncheon at New Morning Bakery at 11:45am

Easter: A Week of Sundays a message from pastor wendell hendershott While Easter Sunday is a glorious celebration of the resurrection of Christ, our res-urrection celebrations don’t stop there, but continue all throughout the season of Easter. While Easter Sunday is sometime co-opted by Easter bunnies, spring sales, and the like, much as Christmas is co-opted by Santa and his merchants, the Chris-tian season of Easter remains intact. In fact, it might even be said to be a counter-cultural response to the commercialism of spring “bargains.” While the local merchants set out their wares from sale to sale, the Christian Church continues to meet Sunday after Sunday proclaiming the good news of the resurrection. The genesis of the Easter Season in the early church came about to provide instruction for those who were newly baptized at the Vigil of Easter in a process called mystagogy (pronounced: MIST-a-goh-jee). Mystagogy is the passing on of instruction about the sacraments, the mysteries of faith. For our present year, year C, each of the gospel passages for the season comes from John’s gospel. While there is no unifying theme, the passages take us as dis-ciples of Christ from Easter to Pentecost. The first lessons appointed for Easter, rather than from the First Testament are from the book of Acts and give us a glimpse of the early church’s proclamation of the resurrection. The psalms are joy-ful responses to the news of Christ’s rising from the dead. The second lessons are all from the book of Revelation. They point beyond Christ’s ascension, by speaking of the second coming of Christ and the establishment of the New Jerusalem. All these scriptures come together each Sunday to extend the celebration of Christ’s resurrection beyond the one single Sunday of Easter. The joy of the resur-rection is simply too great for it to be confined to only one Sunday of the church year. Ergo, the Easter Season takes Easter and extends it to a whole week of Sun-days, seven Sunday’s in a row, plus each of the weekdays, to produce a season of 49 days of rejoicing in the work of Christ, both now and also in the promise of the new Jerusalem to come in the book of Revelation. As if that weren’t enough, we are privileged to live in this beautiful state of Oregon where spring explodes in a demonstration of color and new life. We are already watching it as our state has begun to unfold in new life all around us. This parable of nature reminds us of the new life Christ promises to us. Even as we have put to death our sins through the mercy of God in Christ Jesus through the gift of Holy Baptism, so also we rise to new life in a resurrection like his. The new life we share in Christ Jesus extends beyond our personal salvation; it becomes part of us through the gift of the Holy Eucharist in that our lives take in Christ’s body and blood and are transformed by Christ’s living presence within us, so that we may reach out to all those who are need in a world hungry and thirsty for hope, renewal and life abundant. Alleluia, Christ is Risen! Christ is risen, indeed, Alleluia!

Sandcastle Preschool Scholarship

Last Year, Sandcastle Preschool, a 501 c (3) Not for Profit organization, received funding for two full scholarships through a generous donation from Grace Lutheran Church Foundation. The expense of preschool may be a strain on a family’s budget and in some instances, preschool may not be an option without scholarship aide. Scholarships are intended to ensure that eligible preschool children between the ages of 2.5 to 5 years old have a structured preschool experience prior to entering kindergarten. Sandcastle Preschool is committed to helping children receive early childhood edu-cation. Research supports the importance of this learning experience for future suc-cess in school from kindergarten to post secondary education. Sandcastle Pre-school welcomes the partnership between families and school staff to create a posi-tive preschool experience for children. A group of nine members of Grace Lutheran Church initiated the request for fund-ing last year. This task force hopes to again help eligible families reduce the cost through similar scholarships this coming year. Members of Grace Lutheran Church are invited to contribute to this scholarship op-portunity in order that it might be continued. We will then petition Grace Lutheran Church Foundation to consider supplementing any difference that may develop. If you would like to help, you may designate an offering to “Sandcastle Scholarships.” Monthly tuition rates this past year were $148 per month for Tuesdays and Thurs-days, $196 per month for Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and $334 per month for Monday through Friday Students. The Preschool sessions consist of nine months from September through May. New rates are now being prepared. All applications will be accepted and reviewed individually, impartially and confiden-tially. Candidates will be informed as promptly as possible after application dead-line. This year’s deadline will be similar to last year’s, which was July 31. See the March Grace Gatherings (p. 5) for more information on the Scholarship Program Guide-lines.

On Sunday, April 3rd we will participate in PLU Sunday, lifting up higher education at Pacific Lutheran University. Pastor John Rosenberg, Interim Campus Pastor at PLU, will be with us on this day proclaiming God’s word during our worship and leading a fo‐rum between worship services at 9:45 am in Ronnenkamp Hall.

Founded in 1890 by Norwegian pioneers, PLU continues the distinctive tra‐dition of Lutheran higher education through its commitment to the ad‐vancement of knowledge, thoughtful inquiry and questioning, the prepara‐tion of citizens in service to the world and to its ongoing reform. Located in the Parkland neighborhood of Tacoma, Washington, PLU is set in a region that also offers vast opportunities for outdoor recreation, culture and sports. PLU helps its 3,300 students from all faiths and backgrounds dis‐cern their life’s vocation through coursework, mentorship and internships at world‐class Puget Sound‐area businesses and institutions.

DID YOU KNOW? Pastor Netsie is one of the many “dig” volunteers to which the book, King Herod’s Dream: Caesarea on the Sea, is dedicated. Having once participated in the archeologi‐cal excavation at Caesarea Maritima, she will have an opportunity to return to this site with Pastor Wendell when they join the November pilgrimage to Israel/Palestine next November.

Grace Center / Grace News

Imagine, if you will, that Grace Center welcomes little children with their smiles and

laughter. There are many occasions in which this happens, as the Center enjoys the chil‐

dren from the child care service across the street. How convenient to have a close source

of entertainment. The 25th annual Easter egg hunt is being planned as I write to you. It

will be a colorful event. The Center usually plans something for each of the holidays. You

can picture them at Halloween and Christmas or Valentines Day. Nothing makes the folks

smile so much as the sight of a little one coming for a hug. Intergenerational events are

special for both the older ones and the youngsters.

There is another arrangement with a preschool dance class in town. The Center is open

for the little ballerinas to come in their tutus to perform for the older folks. Where else

can they find an audience so eager to applaud and admire the tiny costumes. Parents

come for the dance performance and bring grandparents and friends. It provides enter‐

tainment and memories of grandchildren, a benefit for everyone.

Luther House News

Lutherfest 2016 We who served on the Lutherfest Planning Team (photo) are so grateful for all who participated in Lutherfest 2016 on February 28 – sponsors, vendors, and especially YOU, our guests. Thank you for helping us raise over $9,000 that will support Luther House programs and outreach in the coming year! There’s high interest in continuing the tradition by hosting a 5th Luther House Beer and Cheese Pairing early in 2017. As soon as we know date and loca-tion we’ll let you know. For now, just know that we’re amazed by your participation and thrilled by your generos-ity!

Spring Term Activities Spring Term is always fully-packed and this year is no exception. The Luther House Student Leadership Team has outlined a busy course of activities for learning, enjoy-ment, and inspiration. They plan to engage in another habitat restoration project on or near Earth Day. Team Luther House will give a report to the Vineyard Cluster WELCA conference on April 23 about their winter service trip to Roseburg’s Casa de Belén transitional living community for homeless teens and their families. Saturday of OSU Moms and Families Weekend we’ll offer a hike that includes mothers of Luther House students. Now a tradition, we’ll host the “May the 4th Be With You” all-day film festival on May 4. Some of our active students will again have key roles in organizing and host-ing Mi Familia Weekend where Pr. Jim is scheduled to give the invocation. May 17-18 students and others will participate in the quadrennial Ministry Site Review. And, of course, commencement will bring festivities to honor our grads and celebrate the year together. All this is in addition to regular weekly Tuesday lunches, Thursday Morning Prayer, and Sunday Supper and TableTalk. The current SLT is recruiting new mem-bers to join continuing members as the leadership team for the 2016-17 academic year. How blessed we are to have such energetic student leaders and engaged stu-dent participants! Luther House Film Visit the Luther House home page at www.luther-house.org where you’ll find a short film that tells a little about what we do and why students think it’s important – in their own voices. Click on the nighttime image of Luther House in the upper left corner to start the short six-minute film. A second, longer film is in the works. We’ll let you know when it’s ready for viewing. What Makes for a Well-Lived Life? This is the theme of Pr. Jim’s annual Luther House teach-in Sunday mornings April 17, 24, and May 1 at Grace Lutheran Church. Growing out of structured conversations he had with students last winter, the three-part series explores qualities that make for a well-balanced life, practices that help undergird those qualities, and the place of com-munity in keeping us healthy. Each week will include interactive elements and reflec-tions from students themselves. Meet in Ronnenkamp Hall from 9:45-10:45 each week.
