Memories...

my first year at the college

(2009 term limited year), the

college was celebrating its

40th year of being open.

I remember Ellen spilling her drink (I

think) on Dr. Naff's white carpet, right

before I took her for a ride on my

Goldwing. I'm not sure which was more

scary.

2012—Great NFI

Group! Lots of

Memories!

I remember how great it was to hear from so

many different folks from across campus during

the semester. Seeing/meeting the faculty senate

chair or the union president was a great way to

start to learn about the faculty culture right from

the beginning. We did a fair amount of reading

and journaling but the real benefit to me was

getting to know my fellow new faculty members

and always wished we had been able to build

tighter connections.

Thank goodness that Donna

Carlson and I were hired the same

year. We were two women in an

entire Division of older men. I

really relied on Donna (and still

do)

I remember riding the bus to the

Lilly conference. The Tuesday

afternoon NFI activities were also

fun. We had a large cohort...17?!I remember when

students used to

talk to each other

before class instead

of look at their

phones :)

The trip to Miami, Ohio University was exciting.

Going to the President's home for a wonderful time of food and mingling

DeRionne made us write a paper on our teaching styles as metaphor. I wrote my teaching style was like a switching

MOSFET buck converter. Needless to say, I did not have to read my paper aloud. Also, that year is a real guess. I started as

full time temp and didn't go to NFI until the next year. I'm the same year as Ana Mazilu, Bob Scherbaum, Kelly Cartright,

Jen Staben and all of them.

NFI is when I met Frank Zera, who

would become my officemate and good

friend. His decades of experience helped

guide me through just my second year as a

teacher, and without him, I wouldn't be

half as good as I am now--though I'm still

not half as good as he was! The president at the time ended his speech each

semester by telling us all to "teach like hell". To this

day my office mate and I say this to each other at

the start of the semester.

I appreciate the NFI with Mark and Lauren. Although it seemed like an inconvenience at times to attend the

sessions, I found the next semester that I really missed the collegiality. Another experience I appreciate was

the Lilly Conference.

I started the same year as Bob Remedi. We spoke, during our NFI

sessions, about doing a combined field course in the Boundary

Waters, Bio and English. Three years later the two of us, along with

new hire, Shane Jones, took over the Appalachian Trail Course

from Jerry Hinkley. We are still going strong.

Attending a Lilly Conference session on using humor comes to mind. I remember wondering why such a

session was necessary, but then I looked around and noticed many serious, straight-faced audience members

asking questions and taking notes. All I could think was, "Lighten up and smile. That's a good place to start!"

I had been at CLC part-time since 1994. NFI was a great opportunity

though to meet faculty from other departments/divisions. I remember in

particular the final dinner we had at the president's house (Gretchen

Naff) and the trip to Ohio for the Learning Conference. Both were good

opportunities to get to know people outside my department and division.

Before CLC, I taught as an adjunct professor at a four year institution

where I taught only upper-level and a couple of graduate level courses. I

remember being very nervous teaching my first classes at CLC especially my

developmental courses. I thought that I wouldn't be a good fit for CLC, that

teaching developmental courses would be a miserable experience, and I

would second guess my decision to teach at CLC. After the first week, I

knew I had nothing to worry about. Eleven years later I always make sure I

teach a developmental course each semester.

I cherish the time spent in NFI, building relationships

with many of my faculty peers and learning about

innovative teaching techniques varied curriculum

throughout the college.

There was a body that appeared in Lauren’s

hotel bed while she was at the Lily

Conference. We had the chance to tour the Waukegan jail as one of our

NFI classes. This was in 2002 and I can still bring the smell

of the jail to memory. It also brought home what it was like

to be incarcerated - as much as a tour could do. We were able

to go into many sections of the jail - from the in-processing

area, to the library, to the solitary confinement section. It was

like being in a multi-level coffin. A sincere thanks to Wendy

Brown for arranging that. It was one of the most memorable

experiences of my life.

I used overheads in all of my classes

and spent hours developing and

photocopying guided notes for my

students. Technology has made some

things more time intensive and difficult

and others much easier. I loved my NFI with DeRionne Pollard. Though I had CLC

teaching experience, it was fun to talk about issues and challenges

with folks from other disciplines. I also met Kelly Cartwright in

this class and our talk in the course not only led to a lasting

personal friendship but to many academic collaborations.

The NFI Program with DeRionne and how much work was involved, but how much it helped me to develop

my teaching skills.

Lilly Conference Trip

I was a group of three new faculty before the onslaught of new faces in the years after. There was no NFI. I

remember best all the food. There were so many retirements. I think I gained about 30 pounds in the first 5

years at CLC.

I remember the adventure of driving to Michigan for the NFI Seminar

with Becky and Natalia - I felt like a new college student again off to

school for the first time facing new challenges and making new friends

- it was such a fun-filled learning experience that I will never forget.

Lily was a fantastic experience academically and socially :-)

My first semester, the faculty union was on strike. Walking through picket lines was scary.

A group of us from NFI started social club. We were teaching at night and would go out on the town of

Grayslake on Thursday nights after we got done teaching. Our spouses decided that they wanted to be

involved so we started the "Third Friday Club." We got together at each others houses every 3rd Friday on

each month. We now get together about once every other year.

What a crowd. The NFI rooms were

packed with a multitude of people from

every spectrum of life. Our trip to the Lilly

Conference gave me time to get to know

many of my fellow "newbies" with whom I

still feel a fellowship. Great memories!

I loved my NFI group. Without them, I would not have

survived.

I have several good memories from NFI, including the sample lessons each new faculty member shared with us.
