Location
• Extends from the Atlantic Ocean in the East to the Pacific Ocean in the West. South is the border with the United States, north to the Arctic Ocean.
Size and Population
• Second largest country in the world• 35 million inhabitants (Mexico has over 120 million)• Most of Canada’s population lives in the southern part of the country
due to the climate. The northern areas are mostly uninhabitable
Political DivisionsTen Provinces and 3 Territories
Capital• Ottawa, located in the province of Ontario, on the border of the
province of Quebec.
Official Languages
• English and French• Due to immigration from many countries, we are multilingual.• The first language of all the provinces except Quebec is English.• Quebec’s first language is French.
Quebec’s Separation
• There has been a lot of controversy within the province of Quebec. Many Quebecois would prefer to separate from the Country of Canada to become an entity of their own. In fact, twice they have held a referendum in which a vote was taken to decide whether they should in fact separate. Both times, the vote decided that they should remain one of Canada’s provinces.
Religion
Canada is predominantly Roman Catholic and Protestant (72%)Roman Catholic – 43%Protestant – 29%
Government
• Three main parties: Liberal /Progressive Conservative / New Democratic Party • They are voted in to rule at 2 levels: Federal / Provincial
The Prime MinisterThe Federal Government’s Parliament Buildings are located in Ottawa. The leader, called the Prime Minister, is Stephen Harper who belongs to the Progressive party.
• Conservative Party.
The Premier Provincial Governments have their Parliament Buildings located in each provincial capital. In Ontario, they are located in Toronto. The leader, called the Premier, is Kathleen Wynne who belongs to the Liberal Party.
What do Canadians Eat?
• Due to immigration to Canada from so many countries, we are multinational and this is obvious from the many varied ethnic restaurants we have. Canadians love eating in restaurants.
Barbeques
• Most Canadians have a Barbeque in their back yard and some diehards even barbeque in winter when it is freezing and snowing.• Favourite Barbeque foods are: steak, chicken, pork chops, ribs,
sausages and wieners, vegetables.
Typical breakfast foods
• Cereal, toast, eggs, bacon and sausages, hash brown potatoes, pancakes with Maple Syrup, porridge.
Lunch
• It is usually a light meal taken between 12 noon and 1:30.• Sandwiches, soup, noodles, hamburgers, hot dogs.
Dinner
• It is the main meal of the day and depending on the activities of the family, it is eaten between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m.• Meat is the focus of the meal: beef, pork, chicken / Potatoes, rice,
pasta, vegetables, salad / Desserts such as pie, cake, tarts, cookies, pudding or ice cream.
Poutine
• A fast food dish which is typically Canadian and which has become quite popular is “Poutine”. It consists of French fries covered with brown gravy and white curd cheese. Mmm Mmm good! ! !
