Fall is always an exciting time at the Chamber, and this year is no exception. This September, we celebrate Industry Appreciation Month at the Chamber! And there’s plenty to celebrate.

Manufacturing alone accounts for 30% of jobs in the region. Kentucky’s low cost of doing business and ideal location for the shipment of goods has resulted in many companies re-investing in its manufacturing sector, particu-larly those in the automotive and transporta-tion equipment industries.

In the last 18 months, we have seen a total of 11 announcements in South Central Ken-tucky, bringing a capital investment of more than $430 million and the creation of over 700 jobs. At a time when the overall capital investment in the Commonwealth dropped 33 percent and saw more than 2,000 fewer jobs created, the amount of capital invested in our region more than tripled from the pre-vious year and the number of jobs more than

doubled. We have many to thank for that suc-cess, including you our partners and our local leadership.

I couldn’t be more proud, and I look forward to celebrating with our businesses later this month. On Tuesday, September 23rd, we’ll celebrate with a Business and Industry Appre-ciation event at the brand new, state-of-the-art NCM Motorsports Park. This is sure to be a great networking event with lots of exciting activities including the chance to take a lap on the new track! On Tuesday, September 30, we’ll honor excellence in our local businesses and industries with a Targeted Business & In-dustry Awards Banquet at the Knicely Confer-ence Center, starting at 5:30 pm. I am looking forward to seeing you all there!

In addition to these exciting events, be sure to join us on September 19th for the Corner-stone Information Systems, Inc. Coffee Hour at the Sloan Convention Center where we’ll hear from tech veteran Scott Vetter of Cisco Systems. You won’t want to miss it!!

As always, it’s my pleasure to serve as your Chairman, and I look forward to seeing you at our Chamber events!

The HistoryClinton & Mary Dunn Potter are the founders of Potter Children’s Home. The Potter family is one of the oldest families in the Warren County area Mary Dunn Potter was the daughter of Spencer Dunn, Sr. and Mary Ann Carpenter Dunn of the Smith Grove area. Mary was raised on a plantation in the Smith Grove area and lived there until her marriage to Albert Potter. Albert & Mary had one son, Eldon S. Potter. Albert passed away suddenly when Eldon was 2. Eldon found a second father in his uncle Clinton. Clinton and Mary wed in 1879. Many people thought Clinton and Eldon were true father and son because of their bond for each other. Eldon was the delight and pride of their hearts.

By 1899 Eldon had grown to manhood. After serving in the Spanish American War, Eldon developed health problems. Eldon died in October of 1899, of typhoid fever. Eldon had never married, and as Clinton and Mary’s only child, his death stunned them and left a great hole in their hearts.

Clinton and Mary wanted Eldon to be remembered. On November 7, 1914 Clinton and Mary Potter deeded the 87 acres of land and buildings to seven Trustees to oversee the Potter Orphan Home and School. Twelve children from the Louisville, KY area were placed in January of 1915, thus beginning the legacy of hope.

In the 1940’s there were several devastating fires. All the original buildings were destroyed along with many records of children that had lived at the home. In 1944 under the oversight of the Board of Trustee’s ground was broken for the “Fireproof Dorm”.

The Bonner-Mclnteer gymnasium was constructed in 1969-70 and expanded several years later. A new administration building was constructed in 1976-77 in front of the Main Dormitory building.

One hundred years later, over 7,000 children and single parent families have called Potter home. Potter Children’s Home & Family Ministries remains on the same property that was Clinton & Mary Potter’s farm.

The PresentOver the years Potter Children’s Home has seen many changes. State regulations changed and children could no longer be taken care of in the dorm. Three houses would be built for the children to be cared for in a family style setting. The dorm would no longer be used to house children in the same way. In the 1980s, the Single Parent Alliance for Raising Kids, or SPARK program, began. The dorm was modified to create apartments for single parent families to live in. Ten apartments for single parent families have been developed in the Dorm building.

Most recent additions to the Home were two buildings, one being the Perry Triplex built in 2009 and the recent Quad-plex apartment building. Both buildings serve as homes for Single Parent families.

The FutureAfter 100 years, the mission of Potter Children’s Home is still the same; to serve and provide a home for children. Future plans include the building of more housing for single parents., complete renovation of the dorm building, and conversion of other buildings on campus. In 2014, the staff and board of Potter Children’s Home look forward to serving another 7,000 children in the next 100 years.

ShopHQ Receives John B. Holland Business of the Year Award

On September 29th, the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Com-merce honored 15 businesses with awards at the annual Busi-ness and Industry Banquet held at the Knicely Center. ShopHQ received the top award of the evening, the John B. Holland Business of the Year Award.

The banquet is held each year in conjunction with Business and Industry Week in an effort to recognize and salute targeted businesses and industries throughout South Central Kentucky for their accomplishments.

“Each year, the Business and Industry banquet is our opportunity to recognize the impact that targeted businesses in our region have on our community,” stated Chair-man of the Chamber Board of Directors John Mark Fones . “We were pleased to have great attendance to pay tribute to the award winners, as well as, take advantage of the opportunity to hear from Lt. “Kentucky has now recovered and exceeded the state’s economic losses suffered during the Great Recession. In fact, in August, job-less rates were down in all 120 counties across the Common-wealth,” Abramson said. “The Governor and I want to thank the Bowling Green Chamber of Commerce, the Warren County Economic Development Authority and all of the local business and industry owners for their partnership in strengthening Kentucky’s economy. Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce Joins National Corvette Museum for Community Grand Opening Celebration and Ribbon Cutting at the NCM Motorsports Park

Surrounded by area community leaders and auto enthusiasts, Governor Beshear joined forces with the National Corvette Museum and Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce on September 16th to celebrate the opening of the $20 million, dual-track NCM Motorsports Park.

The Park is situated on 186 acres purchased and rezoned by the National Corvette Museum. Two circuits, “East” and “West” can be combined in multiple configurations ranging from a high speed loop of 1.96 miles to an extended 3.15 mile technical course. The Corvette Racing/Pratt and Miller Team advised the Museum on the layout of the technical track that includes features from their favorite and most challenging track, the Le Mans circuit in France.

The opening at 505 Grimes Road-- directly across Interstate-65 from the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green-- opens the throttle on up to 80,000 additional visitors each year, bringing an estimated impact of $15 million in motorsports tourism and racing events revenues annually.

“I applaud the National Corvette Museum and the Bowling Green community for this outstanding project,” Gov. Steve Beshear said. “The Motorsports Park will attract thousands of visitors to this area and will play a major role in the tourism economy for years to come.”

“Motorsports enthusiasts from across America have a new favorite destination,” said Warren County Judge Executive Mike Buchanon. “South Central Kentucky is already a hub for motorsports activity, and the opening of this premier facility will be yet another jewel in our crown.”

“I am really excited to be part of this fantastic facility and the NCM Motorsports Park team,” says Mitch Wright, General Manager of the NCM Motorsports Park. “Our facility is a great destination for corporate activity, driver training and education, and recreational motor-sports for car and motorcycle enthusiasts. A great buzz within the enthusiast community has been building and we are looking forward to showing off this great venue to all that come to drive, ride or tour the place.”

According to Mayor Bruce Wilkerson, “The NCM Motorsports Park is a world class facility and I am so excited for them to be located right here in Bowling Green. From racing to corporate events to recreational events, this facility will be an economic engine the drives us well into the future.”

To date, over 190 track days have been book for the next year. A complete calendar of events and activities is online at www.motorsportspark.org.

Leadership bowling Green’s Class of 2014 Proudly introduces the Stewart-Richey Construction Walking trail at t. C. Cherry Elementary School

The Bowling Green Area Chamber’s 2014 Leadership Bowling Green class was tasked with completing a class project that benefitted a local school in conjunction with Dr. Stephen Covey’s The Leader in Me. After carefully considering five proposed projects from area schools, this year’s class chose to build a walking and exercise trail at T. C. Cherry Elementary, one of our Bowling Green city schools. In order for the trail to be completed before kids return to school, the trail was installed in June and July.

The trail itself is about a third of a mile and incorporates seven exercise “stations” around the trail that correspond with The Leader in Me. To match T.C. Cherry’s already beautiful and mature campus, the class used natural elements such as crushed limestone for the walking trail and wood beams for the stations. It was their hope that not only would the students and teach-ers enjoy the trail, but the surrounding neighbors, as well.

“Our students are utilizing the trail and stations, especially the third through fifth graders,” commented Principal Kory Twy-man. “The children have enjoyed all of the stations, but I think the community has really enjoyed it, as well. At the end of each day, we always have community members using the trail and stations.”

The trail sponsor, Stewart Richey Construction, provided numerous materials, equipment, and man-hours for the project. Ryan Stokes, who represents Stewart Richey in this year’s class, served as the overall project manager and was a priceless re-source to the group. “We couldn’t have done this without Ryan and the support of Stewart Richey,” said Jacqueline Rowe, class vice-president. “Ryan made sure that our trail was installed properly with quality materials, so that it could be enjoyed by the school for many years to come.”
