Welcome to our 45th Year!!

Join Us On the Journey

This Parish Booklet represents another dramatic step in Transfiguration’s evolving journey as the Episcopal outpost in the Colorado Rocky Mountains! Yes, in the following pages please find all the brief reports,

financial information and Vestry candidate biographies we provide every year to be transparent and accountable to you for your generous gifts of time, talent and treasure. Yes, as usual please find our

calendar of (mostly) anticipated festivals, programs and events populating our shared parish life in 2019. Yes, we commit ourselves again to our mission - to know Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and to make Him known. And yes, under that missional umbrella we transition from our 2018 ministry theme of Comfort to

our 2019 theme of Journey.

But we must change and evolve also! You are reading the first non-print, all-digital Parish Booklet, available for download (and print as you like) on your phone, tablet or laptop. And we’ll be updating the

calendar throughout the year as circumstances dictate! Growth and change….all part of the wisdom of our 4th decade of congregational presence, worship and service. What a privilege to be alongside your journey

these past 24 years! Congratulations and buon viaggio Transfiguration!!!!

Warmly in the Lord,

INTERFAITH COMMUNITY REPORT Transfiguration is unique among Episcopal churches nationwide for our innovative, collaborative partnership we call the interfaith concept. For us, “interfaith” and “interreligious” are not at all conceptual but a daily blessing of experiential and communal reality! Also, distinctively unique is our multi-campus interfaith footprint which provides three well-situated community base camps from which to serve our mountain valley corridor. ECOT provides significant financial, programmatic and logistical leadership to all three independent 501(c)3 foundations who own and operate each chapel facility. The Vail Religious Foundation continues to upgrade our physical plant while envisioning an exciting future as Vail’s primary spiritual anchor. A protracted negotiation process produced a refurbished tabernacle design separating the Roman Catholic from the Episcopalian consecrated elements of bread and wine at the request of the Archdiocese of Denver; the new double doors with new electronic candle are clearly visible behind the altar and honor the sensitivities of our Jewish congregation regarding faith-neutral chapel architecture. As the VRF celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Vail Chapel’s founding this year, we are planning to build a Creekside meditation garden and raise needed monies to bolster our endowment for future maintenance. Similarly, the Beaver Creek Religious Foundation is planning extensive refurbishment of both the Chapel’s roof and ceiling for more effective snow management while planning a fall lower level radical makeover. The basement re-design and improvements reflect consultations with congregational leaders and wedding consultants to better serve all constituencies. The Eagle Valley Religious Foundation, following a very productive series of conversations with various stakeholder groups, has envisioned a future for the Edwards Interfaith Chapel and Community Center which does not include further facility expansion at this time. Rather, the EVRF Board is pursuing the establishment of prudent reserve funds and a warm partnership with Stone Creek Charter School, as well as funds to complete the parking lot and entrance sign. Due to dramatic neighboring developments building several hundred new housing units immediately adjacent to the Edwards Chapel, and the resulting security needs of both Stone Creek and our own congregants, enhanced security measures such as new cameras inside and outside the facility, and keypads to open locked doors, were also installed. Constant vigilance to facility maintenance is required and on-going. Another EVRF initiative involves plans to construct a columbarium behind the Chapel; such a columbarium would be a dedicated, permanent repository for cremains (cremated ashes) on sacred ground. All these efforts will continue apace in 2019.

LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS

Beloved in Christ, The Roman God Janus, from whom we derive January, is the Roman deity of transitions who looks simultaneously ahead of and behind him. As I survey 2018 I count great blessings and great loss, most especially the death our beloved Parish Deacon, the Reverend Steve Baird. Steve’s memorial was a special moment of remembrance fitting to honor so great a man, husband, father, grandfather, friend and leader to all of us. 2018 also witnessed the retirement announcement of our long-time leader Bishop Robert O’Neill, and the election of his successor Bishop-elect Kym Lucas. Our parish hosted both leaders during the election process and final episcopal visitation of Bishop O’Neill, with wonderful Confirmations, on December 2nd. 2018 saw significant summer wildfire close to us as ECOT responded impressively by staffing the Salvation Army Mobile Canteen while serving hundreds of firefighters and other emergency personnel from across the country. A rare lightning storm forced us inside for our annual Mountaintop worship in early August, but no storm could stop us taking over 85 scrollers young and old to examine firsthand the Dead Sea Scroll exhibit at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. Elsewhere please read about the impressive expansions of our ministries to children and youth, evolution of our caring ministries, continued excellence in our communication ministry, and interfaith engagement in 2018. This year past also saw new leadership coming forward to re-vivify our Mission and Outreach Ministries. In all, we served 15,000 souls in 2018 during 428 worship events of every kind while baptizing 8, burying 5 and marrying 13 new couples. Bishop O’Neill added 27 Confirmations and Receptions while 6 were incorporated. For 2019, our 45th year of parish ministry, our ministry theme is “Join Us On the Journey!” While featuring a trimmer annual expense budget we expand our daily, weekly and monthly offerings bringing all participants into a deeper, richer and more robust experience of knowing Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and making Him known. Our Lenten, Holy Week, Easter, Advent and Christmas offerings will partner with our weekly children, youth and adult teachings to invite all members to a deeper journey with Christ. Annual highlights we anticipate include a late Easter observance of April 21st, the Consecration of Bishop-elect Kym Lucas at the Cathedral of Saint John’s in Denver on May 18th, and a parish pilgrimage to the Holy Land in September. And, of course, all the unplanned moments which this parish excels in responding to on short notice! It's going to be an exciting year to be sure! Come join us for the journey!

I can hardly believe that we are beginning a new year. Time has flown by quickly, but we have been busy doing God’s work. In 2018, we continued to worship in Vail and Edwards each Sunday morning. The Gathering continues to meet each Sunday evening at 6pm. I have had so much fun teaching both during our Advent Faith Formation in Edwards and at Wondering Women. Working with Mary Cotton to prepare an intergenerational program to focus our hearts as we prepared for the coming of Jesus was a blessing that continues to give me new life. Thank you to all those who volunteered to feed us breakfast each Sunday morning in December. I am always amazed at the hard work of our parish life team as they give elegant and fun events throughout the year. Finally, as a parish, we turned our faith into action all year long. So many of you stepped up to help feed first responders during the fires this summer, to assist at the Salvation Army and to provide meals for those in need around our community. These moments of giving are just the tip of the iceberg. I’m learning, of how this congregation is willing to give of itself. Thank you for all the support you gave us in 2018 and I am so excited for our plans to journey together in 2019. We are looking forward to engaging with one another and our community in many ways. I invite you all to “Join Us on The Journey” as we learn more about our God and how we are called to part of God’s kingdom. ECOT is privileged to have 11 Care Team members who provide emotional and spiritual support to individuals and families within the ECOT church family. In 2018 we helped companion those who could use a little extra support and also hosted Care Team Dinners before the holidays to talk about loss of all kinds and how to cope during the holidays, a particularly difficult time to deal with big changes in our lives. We are here for those in 2019 who want some extra companionship. Many people do not want to be identified as “needy.” We get it. We are all just companioning each other during this life and all of the Care Team members are “wounded healers,” knowing what it means to be human! Call us to talk or for a visit!

Matthew 19:14 . . . Jesus said “Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.” Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is the inspiration for our children’s faith formation, and brings our children close to Jesus in a profound way. CGS offers scripture and liturgical presentations in a manner that elicits a response of innate joy in our youngest children, and intrigues our older children as they learn about God’s plan for salvation and their place in God’s Kingdom. In 2018, 20 children attended our Lenten after-school faith formation program and explored the city of Jerusalem through the events of Holy Week. Our summer camp hosted 28 kids and some of them received scholarships thanks to your pledges of time, talent and treasure. Little Lambs, our Mom’s Morning Out for toddlers, is thriving at full capacity and a wait list in place for the fall of 2019! We’ve purchased individual bibles for 1st grade and older children who are registered for Sunday school. These bibles are kept at Sunday school and brought to after school programs and summer camp so the kids feel a sense of ownership as they study their personal bibles. Looking forward, our Sunday school journey for 2019 is focused on the altar: how did it appear in the Old Testament; what was Jesus’ experience as a Jewish child and man with the altar; and, how did Jesus institute the altar as it appears in our church today? As we continue to help our children To Know Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and to Make Him Known, please consider volunteering for our Sunday school. Your time and talent will be a blessing to our children and to you! Thank you for making Sunday mornings a priority for your families, and for supporting the newest generation of Christians on their journey of faith. Phew! I’ve completed my first full year of serving as the youth minister at this church, and what an awesome year it’s been! In 2018, your generosity allowed us to take 9 youth to Quest Youth retreats, serve with 13 youth on a summer mission trip, celebrate the confirmation of 19 of our

high school students, and gift all 80 of our youth (plus some of their friends) with Christmas cookies and Easter gift boxes. Thank you for your support! In 2019, we will continue to deepen the work of the youth ministry by developing a Youth Ministry Vestry comprised of parents, youth, and church members to give strength and structure to this program. We are also very excited to continue journeying with our high school students who completed Confirmation as they explore what it means to be adult members of the Body of Christ. Lastly, I am thrilled to share that ECOT will host a youth mission trip for 50 students from around Colorado at the Edwards Chapel this summer. Your donations of time, talent, and treasure make this work possible. Thank you! 2018 has come and gone, marking my tenth year with the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration as your Parish Administrator. . . where has the time gone? In 2018, we’ve made some new changes, including: installing ShelbyNext software that allows our parishioners to view, edit, and setup their church account; adding online donations via ShelbyNext or our website, www.episcopalvail.com; and, organizing our church files and office, thanks to the office volunteers (Office Angels) that help us to better serve you. I am still looking for more Office Angels that are willing to volunteer their time to help out in the office. If you are interested, please contact Margie at (970) 476-0618 or [email protected]. Working with and for all of you continues to be one of the greatest blessings that I have ever received. I feel like I’ve received the “Great Grace” that Pastor Mark preached about in the past! God’s blessings have continued to show me how to live out His Word just as Jesus Christ did. I am on a journey with our Lord and you have played a significant role in the growth of my faith and love for Our Lord, Jesus Christ. In 2019, I plan to continue my studies in Church Business Administration with The Church Network (TCN). “The Church Network is an inter-denominational association of churches and individuals which exists to serve the church by promoting the highest level of professional competence in individuals serving Christ through administration in local churches.” My plan is to attend the 2019 Conference in Charlotte, N.C., so that I can complete my certification in Church Business Administration. I am also attending a four-year study of the bible through the Denver Catholic Biblical School. I am in my second year of studies and learning and growing in the definition of our mission statement: “To Know Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and to Make Him Known.” Thank you for the chance to grow with you and for the ministry we share in this beautiful valley.

As the new Director of Mission & Outreach, I am thrilled to head our new seven-member committee consisting of myself, Mary Cotton, Jayme Rinn, Caroline Leonardo, Steve Troskosky, Patrick Hasselbach and Mike Williams. In 2018, we were honored to disperse over $29,000 to 13 local, national, international partners, and several youth missioners. Seven families, including 16 children and youth, were supported this past holiday season through Mission & Outreach and generosity within the congregation. We are excited to start the next chapter of ECOT’s Mission & Outreach. We have partnered with Habitat for Humanity on their “2019 Faith Build.” We will volunteer and actively participate along with other churches in the valley to help create six new homes. We will start working with Rebecca Cotton, our youth director, to engaging our youth in various mission and outreach projects in the community and beyond. We hope to plan a domestic mission trip in 2019 and an international mission trip in 2020. Mission & Outreach needs some experienced people to help with the planning of these trips! 2018 flew by with another great year at Transfiguration. With communications efforts stabilizing and digital efforts becoming more integrated into registrations, signs up, donations and more, I hope you take full advantage of the resources available to us all. 2019 holds much promise as we streamline efforts and costs to keep a smart, efficient system in place. With many new events and things to keep up on like The Fifth Gospel: A Journey to the Holy Land, and many other journeys we will embark on together as a congregation, I appreciate any and all input on how you receive and react to this information and how it is distributed. Thank you again for the opportunity to serve the Transfiguration community!

As this year closes I look back and think that, as a Vestry, we accomplished a number of notable tasks. First, the fiscal stewardship of a budget that encompassed a myriad of activities ranging from mission outreach to our newly successful youth ministry (thank you, Rebecca) which brought forward the large confirmation class celebrated in December. Last January we lost our beloved Deacon Steve Baird. The congregation, the Vestry, the staff and Clergy all cooperated in monumental efforts to conduct a state memorial with Bishop O’Neill presiding. The significant refurbishment of the parish rectory was completed, and we all got together and provided all of the services necessary for the Regional Bishop’s Walkabout. These are just a few examples of how well this congregation functions. Other activities included participation in the manning of the Salvation Army Mobile Kitchen, supporting firefighters at a large number of fires over the summer, and the providing of staff for the chapels, opened to provide shelter for motorists stranded by the closure of the passes due to accidents or weather. This is but an overlook at just how many areas this church is involved in and doesn't even mention the support of our suppers and the fundraising events for the Edwards Chapel and the Christmas Holiday Services. As this is the last of my year-end notes, I want to thank each and every one of you for all the support that I received during my tenure as Senior Warden. As I enter into the next chapter of my involvement with the church, I begin my postulancy leading to my ordination as a Deacon. I am truly blessed and I look forward to continue serving you in the future. The Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration continued to serve the Vail community through its two locations in 2018. In Father Brooks’ 24-year tenure, Transfiguration has been known for its traditional worship and the breath of its service programs. These programs continued this past year with the addition of the Advent teaching programs and Mother Emily’s women’s Bible study group. Again, Transfiguration took the lead in the ecumenical 4th of July service and pancake breakfast attended by over 100 persons. There was an increase in the number of baptisms, weddings, and memorial services during the year as well.

The formation of the Care Team, under the leadership and direction of Denise Delaney, allowed Father Brooks and Mother Emily to deal with other counseling matters. Members of the team were able to meet with parishioners over coffee after the 8:00 service to discuss their issues. 2019 will also bring additional studies and teaching during Epiphany Sundays. We look forward to this. The Edwards church family continues to thrive. Most notable signs of this are the 19 youth confirmands, steady attendance at both 10 am worship and after church adult formation, lively discussion at the children’s sermon before they are led to Sunday school, our notorious 10-minute passing of the peace, and running out of coffee every week at fellowship. What a blessing it is to see the holy spirit with us each week. Mother Emily and Father Brooks offer us a beautiful clergy team that, after 2½ years working seamlessly together, brings our parish many opportunities for worship and study to deepen our faith throughout week. Another very exciting addition to our leadership is our Senior Warden Mike Williams’ calling to become a Deacon. How lucky are we to get to see him serving on the altar one day! As Vestry representative of the Edwards congregation, I continue to be available to everyone to answer any questions, or share any concerns or suggestions. Keep inviting your friends to join us Sunday mornings and at all our fellowship events throughout the year.

2018 ANNUAL PARISH MEETING REPORT

45th Celebration Lunch and Annual Parish Meeting Minutes of The Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration, Vail Valley, Colorado

The Edwards Interfaith Chapel and Community Center January 28th, 2018

Father Stuart Brooks Keith III called the 45th Annual Parish Meeting of Transfiguration to order with an opening prayer at 12:20 PM. He appointed Margaret Ciaccio as Meeting Secretary and Suzanne Hoffman as Meeting Parliamentarian. Upon consultation of parish By-Laws, he determined that the assembly gathered did not constitute a quorum as defined by Article III, Section 5. The Parliamentarian recommended moving to an “in quorate” meeting format in which we open the meeting, conduct business as usual, and use the subsequent Sunday worship services to continue the meeting until a quorum was reached. Accordingly, at regularly held Sunday worship services the Sunday following, on February 4th, located at the Vail and Edwards Interfaith Chapels and with advance notification by electronic means, Father Brooks determined the presence of a quorum and continued the Meeting until adjournment. Father Brooks asked for a motion to approve the 44th Annual Meeting Minutes from the January 29th, 2017 meeting. Suzanne Gilbert moved and Sara Fisher seconded the motion. It passed unanimously. Father Brooks nominated Mike Williams for his third and final year as Senior Warden. Mike has been ministering to Father Brooks and Mother Emily Anderson Lukanich and has been a great support during very trying times. Father Brooks moved Mike’s nomination and Jim McVey seconded the motion among many others. The motion passed by enthusiastic and unanimous acclamation. Mike thanked Father Brooks, Mother Emily and the Vestry for their support and guidance. Mike says on behalf of a grateful Vestry they are gifting a dinner to the Keith family. Father Brooks thanked the Vestry for their generosity. Father Brooks introduced the Class of 2018 Vestry Candidates Dick Gyde and Camille Thurston to the congregation (not present). Mike Williams moved the floor be closed for nominations and Bonnie Marlette seconded. The motion passed unanimously. Rob Schilling moved the Vestry candidates be elected by slate and Ned Gwathmey seconded. The motion passed unanimously. Denise Delaney moved the election of the 2018 Vestry Slate and John Knauf seconded. The motion passed unanimously. Father Brooks introduced Transfiguration’s new Parish Treasurer Shawna Knauf, and thanked retiring Treasurer Jim Haeffner for his seven-year tenure as a faithful and successful servant. Father Brooks also thanked Assistant Parish Treasurer Terry Smith for her expert assistance to insure a smooth transition, and recognized Kimberly Brewster our great bookkeeper. Shawna

reviewed the 2017 financial report, included in detail among Meeting documents, thanking her predecessor and the congregation for another successful year ending with the highest-ever total annual income of $923,000.00. Shawna projected using some undesignated income over expense to pay for rectory refurbishments in the coming months, and will work with the Finance Team to implement a conservative investment plan. He has been a resident of the Vail Valley since 2009, and has been a member of Transfiguration since 2010. Chad’s work experience includes several years in the hospitality industry as a night auditor and six years in group reservations at the Vail Cascade Resort & Spa. He is currently the front office manager for the Vail Valley Animal Hospital’s Eagle-Vail clinic.

Jennifer Woolley has been with Vail Resorts since 1989 and has worked as the Company’s IT Support Center Manager since 2001. She began attending ECOT in 2002, became a member in 2006, and confirmed into the Episcopal Church in 2012. Her involvement in ECOT expanded beyond Sunday services when Curate Alex Large personally invited her to a bible study. From there, it snowballed! Lisa Barber asked her to help organize the second iteration of the bible study; Father Brooks requested help with communications around the church move; Barbara Jean asked if she could sew; Deb Travers asked to help with events… and Jennifer said yes to it all.

2018 PARISH TREASURER’S ANNUAL SUMMARY

Dear ECOT Family, As I complete my first full year as your Treasurer I continue to be amazed at your generosity and support. I enjoyed getting to know all the ins and outs of my new position and have received much knowledge and help from my Assistant Treasurer, Terry Smith, and from the very talented group of people on my Finance Committee. We were able to work with the staff to keep expenses down for most of the year, and we also worked hard to lower the overall expenses for the 2019 Budget. CPA Review for 2017 Our CPA Review for 2017 was completed with no deficiencies or misstatements. Financial Performance for 2018 The Plate receipts and Unrestricted Pledges exceed the 2018 Budget putting the income for the year at $941,916 just over $43,000 more than projected. Expenses came in over budget mostly due to some added healthcare costs and higher pledge amounts to the Mountain Region and the Diocesan. The year end result was $20,105.95 in net income. Balance Sheet The positive Operating Income will be allocated to the Operating Checking Account to help with 2019 Cash Flow. Mission and Outreach For 2018 we collected just over $23,756 in mission donations. These funds continue to provide much appreciated support to our local, domestic, and international mission partners. Other Parish Expenditures The 2018 budget once again offered many opportunities for our youth. They met for movies, coffee, performances, dinners and a statewide youth retreat in Denver at the Cathedral. The Children’s Ministry continues to provide great programs like the Mother’s Group, Summer Camp, Christmas Pageant, Sunday School, and the Nursery. We also continued to have many wonderful Parish Gatherings throughout the year. Thank you to all of you for your support of time, talent and treasure. All financial statements are available at the church office. Please feel free to call me at 970-376-8693. I am happy to answer any questions.

2019 NARRATIVE BUDGET

INTRODUCTION The annual parish budget is a ministry blueprint of how we intend to best fulfill our shared mission to know Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and to make Him known in 2019. According to the Canons of the Episcopal Church, our denominational church law, each parish Vestry is responsible for approving the parish budget as the Board of our 501(c)3 non-profit organization entitled “The Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration.” The Finance Committee, chaired by our Parish Treasurer, develops a draft budget in consultation with the Rector and staff. This draft budget is rigorously reviewed multiple times before being presented to the Vestry for their amendment or approval. A summary of the approved Parish Budget is then presented to the congregation at the Celebration Lunch and Annual Parish Meeting. The Rector and staff are responsible to manage their ministries to this budget during 2019. A printed copy of this narrative Parish Budget is kept in the Church Office, and any ECOT member or seasonal member is welcome to review our monthly financial summaries at any time. TOTAL INCOME $ 876,860.00 ECOT’s Parish Budget has always been founded upon member pledges of time, talent and treasure to successfully fulfill our parish mission. Our 2019 projected income is derived from various donations sources including open plate from worship services, unrestricted and restricted pledges, and gifts designated by the donor. Additionally, we are blessed by financial support from Leadership Pledgers. ECOT does not receive income from a Parish Endowment or any external church finding source, thus being dependent upon member, seasonal member and guest generosity to entirely fund our annual budget. TOTAL EXPENSES $ 879,311.00 2019 expenses comprise our best projection of what we need to spend within our means to best serve our congregation, interfaith chapels, local community, mountain Northwestern Region of neighboring Episcopal congregations, the broader Episcopal Church in Colorado, and various mission partners. Our Vestry policies require a balanced budget, or very close to balanced, if we have reserved funds sufficient to cover the shortfall. The Vestry and Finance Committee have prudently accrued Reserve funds available to cushion unexpected fiscal shortfalls if necessary. All expenses are audited or reviewed annually by an external professional auditor following close-of-year, and the signature page of this audit is always included in the Parish Booklet. ]
