Materials:

Bring patriotic pizazz to your Independence Day dinner party with these colorful napkin rings. This Step-by-Step was adapted from our kiln-formed bracelet tutorials. To learn more about creating kiln formed bracelets, or to locate supplies, simply use the search feature on DelphiGlass.com and type in “kiln bracelet” for a list of supplies.

1. Begin by cutting four 1”x 6”strips of Bullseye Mardi Gras glass. Cut another four 1”x 6” strips of Bullseye Fusible White Opal - Double Rolled . Using the Red Orange and True Blue, cut 2 free formed squares from each of the two colors. Clean the glass well to remove any residue or fingerprints. 2. Lay the four white strips on your work surface. Apply a few drops of Bullseye Glastac Firing Glue #B8234. Lay one strip of the Bullseye Mardi Gras on top of each of the white strips. Apply a small drop of Glastac to the center of each strip stack and position the red squares on two of the strips and the blue squares to the remaining two strips. Apply a drop of Glastac to the center of the squares and position one Wasser White Star to the center of each square. 3. Set the blanks on a kiln shelf covered with a piece of shelf paper or a clean kiln shelf that has been coated with a high firing kiln wash. Fire the glass to a tack fuse (approximately 1325° – 1400° F) or until the edges of the glass are rounded and no longer sharp and the star still retains it’s shape. Begin checking the glass at around 1275°. Flash vent kiln to approximately 1100° F. Turn kiln off and allow the glass to cool back down to room temperature. 4. Using 1/32” Fiber Paper, cut a piece the length of the mandrel and wide enough to wrap around it. Secure with copper wire on each end. 5. Place a fused bracelet strip of the desired length on the prepared bracelet mandrel so that it is centered lengthwise and perpendicular to the mold. Turn the tabletop the kiln on high and monitor the bracelet until it has softened and the ends have drooped and are pointing straight down. Important safety note: Before manipulating the bracelet, turn off the kiln, put on the heat protective gloves and remove the lid of the kiln. 6. Wearing protective gloves, hold the bracelet tongs with both hands and starting at the top of the bracelet begin to gently glide the graphite paddles along the surface of the bracelet until you have slid down past the bracelet mandrel. It’s important to note that you are maintaining constant contact with the glass and are actually gently pressing the glass into the mandrel and not pushing down on the glass. This “locks” the glass to the mandrel so that it doesn’t move off center and out of position. To push the ends of the bracelet up and under the mandrel, gently rotate to the right and continue gliding along the surface of the glass until you have reached the right end of the bracelet. The handle of the tongs should nearly be touching the collar of the kiln when you have completed this motion to ensure you have a secure wrap.

Now repeat this same motion and gently rotate the tongs to the left and push the left end of the bracelet up and under the mandrel.

Once complete, place the lid back on the kiln and check the pyrometer. It should be in the 1000-1100 deg. Fahrenheit range. If it’s higher, remove the lid for a few seconds to allow the heat to dissipate and continue to do so until the pyrometer is in this temperature range. Turn the kiln on low and allow it to soak for 30 minutes to anneal the glass properly. Once complete, turn the kiln off and wait for it to cool off to room temperature before removing your completed project.

Patriotic Sparkler Plant Stakes Make fun and festive glass sparkler stakes to

adorn your window box, floral arrangement or

other patriotic centerpiece with this quick project

idea.

Project by artist Julie Haan. Shown below in a KraftyBlok and frit centerpiece.

Materials:

Instructions:

1. Cut red glass into ½” squares. Cut white glass into 3/8” squares.

2. Cut lengths of high temp wire approximately 6” to 8” long.

3. On a prepared kiln shelf, lay out a series of 3 or 4 red squares in a row with about 1” to 1-1/2” apart.

Lay high temp wire across squares so that one end of the wire ends in the middle

of top square and additional wire overlaps off end of bottom square (see image).

Apply a dot of Glastac adhesive to each red square, then cap wire on red squares

with a piece of white glass. Add another drop of Glastac and position a piece of

star millefiori in the center of each set of squares.

4. Repeat until you’ve created the desired number of stakes.

5. Allow Glastac to dry.

6. Fire to a full fuse referencing chart below.

7. While firing, cut lengths of pre-tinned copper wire to desired lengths (we suggest approximately 12” to

14”).

8. Once fused pieces have cooled, twist high temp wire stems around pre-tinned wire adding loops and

curls for decorative effect. Delphi Tip: For plant stakes to be used in potted plants or window boxes

create a spiral at the base of pre-tinned wire stem by wrapping wire several times around a thick

marker. This will allow you to “screw” the stake into your potted plant for better stability.



Note: *All kilns are not alike. Your kiln size, controller type, and individual project may require some alteration to

this schedule for best results. Delphi Tip: Keep a firing log to make it easy to replicate your favorite projects.

Instructions:

1. Determine the size of your project by measuring the opening in the display stand or stand in which the

project will be installed.

2. On a table or smooth firm work board, layout and tape down graph paper to accommodate the

dimensions of your complete project (if joining multiple pieces of graph paper align grid lines carefully).

3. Mark the outside border of the design on the paper. Find and mark the center of the pattern. Delphi Tip:

To find the center of a square or rectangular panel, align the straight edge diagonally across the pattern

from top left to bottom right and lightly trace along the center, then reposition the straight edge

diagonally from bottom left to top right and lightly trace along the center. The point where the lines

cross is the center. Lightly trace in a vertical line and horizontal line from this point for reference.

4. Lay out the bevel cluster according to the manufacturer cartoon included with the cluster and transfer to

your pattern. Shift the cluster around on your pattern until positioned as desired. Design Tip: To make

the bevel cluster the primary focal point, consider centering the bevel design.

5. Trace the bevel pieces onto the pattern, then add pattern lines for glass to complete the design. For

strength, avoid creating any “hinge points” (horizontal lines that run continuously across the panel) by

using curved or diagonal design lines.

6. Use graphite transfer paper under the pattern to trace and create a second “cutting copy” of your

pattern before beginning your project.

Materials:

Red transparent frit

Cobalt Blue opal frit

Clear or White frit

Instructions

1. Clean the KraftyBlok and dry it completely.

2. Pour frit in the color of your choice into the KraftyBlok to create the first layer. Use a paint brush, lenth

of dowel or other tool to gently spread frit as desired.

3. Carefully add a layer of frit in a contrasting color and position frit as before. Continue adding layers in

alternating colors as desired.

4. If desired, use a paint brush handle, pencil or narrow dowel to push downward through layers to create

downward plunges of color through contrasting bands.

5. Continue adding layers until the KraftyBlok is filled to within approximately ½” of the top.

6. Use clear silicone adhesive to apply a star bevel to the outside of the KraftyBlok as a final design

embellishment.

Design Tips:

Hold the block at an angle to create diagonal bands of color

Use glass rods, stringers, confetti, marbles, pebbles or pre-cut shapes to embellish the top layer of

your centerpiece

Instructions:

1. Print, assemble and re-size the pattern to fit the 6” engraved bevel (Free full-size pattern available with

item #2241 at DelphiGlass.com; reduced size pattern shown below).

2. Cut and grind the red, white and blue glass pieces to fit the pattern. Delphi Tip: Position pattern pieces

on textured glass to ensure that the texture is aligned the same direction throughout the entire project.

3. Clean all glass pieces, wrap edges in copper foil tape and burnish.

4. Solder the project, front and back to create a smooth solder bead.

5. Apply a came border and hanging hooks if desired.

6. Clean and finish with a flux neutralizing cleaner, patina and polish as desired.

7. Apply Large White Wasser Stars to the project using clear silicone adhesive and allow to dry.

Instructions:

1. Cut glass following pattern below, clean and set aside.

2. Form 14 rings with “tails” (see diagram at right) from high temp wire.

3. On a prepared kiln shelf, stack:

a. 2 white waves which will become the top bar of the chime. Position 2 rings with the tail between

glass layers near the outside corners of the top edge, and 4 rings with the tail between glass

layers evenly spaced along the bottom edge.

b. 2 sets of white waves and 2 sets of red waves with a single ring positioned between glass layers

on the narrow end of each set.

c. 2 sets of blue squares with a single ring positioned between glass layers at a corner of each set.

Optional: To add a dimensional imprinted star design, cut a star from 1/8” fiber paper and center

it under the bottom layer of blue glass.

d. Lay out each white star, stack a white circle on the center, and position white triangles on points

of stars. Position a single ring between a triangle and star point on each set.

4. Fire to a medium to full fuse (see firing chart below for guidelines).



5. Clean all fused glass pieces and assemble the chime using suncatcher hanging line and crimps.

Eagle Stepping Stone A Stained Glass Project

PROJECT TITLE: Eagle Stepping Stone Embolden your garden with this Patriotic Stepping Stone. Hexagon in shape, this stone is inlayed with a stained glass bald eagle proudly displaying a red, white and blue shield. A great accent for Memorial Day, 4th of July, Veterans Day and other patriotic holidays. ------------------------------- DESIGNED BY: Elaine Fossler ------------------------------- SKILL LEVEL: (Adult 1-5: 1 being the easiest, 5 being most difficult) 3 ------------------------------- TIME TO COMPLETE: 2 days ------------------------------- VENDOR NAME: Diamond Tech ------------------------------- INSTRUCTIONS:

1. To protect work area, cover with newspaper. 2. Enlarge pattern by 200% and print two copies. Trim to fit a 16” hexagon

mold. Prepare Jennifer’s Mosaics™ stepping stone mold by lightly coating inner edges with petroleum jelly and set aside.

3. Cut a sheet of vinyl resist or clear contact paper to the size of the pattern and the bottom of the mold.

4. Number the pattern pieces, make sure you number both patterns exactly the same. Place one copy of the pattern on your work surface.

5. Cut out the pieces of the second pattern. NOTE: For perfect mosaic grout lines use Jennifer’s Mosaics™ Pattern Shears. If using regular scissors cut inside the black lines.

6. Place the pattern pieces on the selected glass you’ve chosen for you stone, making note of the grain or flow of the glass. Remember, trace your pattern on the smooth side of the glass. Write the corresponding number on each piece.

7. Set-up the Precision 2000 for wet cutting with a diamond blade. Make sure the water reservoir is full and the spray nozzle is properly angled. When ready to cut, turn the water supply on first, then the band saw. Cut each piece from the glass. If necessary, grind the edges of the glass for a proper fit. Clean and dry glass after grinding.

8. When glass is cut, dry with a paper towel or soft cloth making sure you do not to rub off the pattern numbers.


9. Place the pieces correctly on the second pattern. Allow ¼” between pieces for cement grout lines. When all pieces are correctly placed, remove the marker with alcohol and return them to their position on the pattern.

10. Remove the backing from the contact paper and press over the glass. Press firmly and evenly so that all the glass pieces stick to the paper. This will keep the pieces from shifting when pouring the cement.

11. Place glass/vinyl sheet into the mold, vinyl side down (See diagram), so that the glass is facing you. Adjust pieces as necessary and press firmly onto vinyl.

12. For long lasting beautiful stones that are easy to make use Jennifer’s Mosaics™ Outdoor Cement, it can be custom colored and needs no reinforcement or sealant. A Place 24 cup of Jennifer’s Mosaics™ Outdoor Cement in a bucket and slowly add 60 fluid ounces of water to the mix. Continue adding water to the outdoor cement until the mixture resembles smooth pancake batter. If using regular cement follow directions on packaging.

13. If using regular cement fill mold 1/3 way with mortar mix. Fill the remainder of the mold with reinforced cement. Both Jennifer’s Mosaics™ Outdoor Cement and regular cement may be colored with Colorants™.

14. Slowly and evenly pour cement into mold. Fill mold approximately 7/8 full. Lightly tap the sides of the mold for 1 – 2 minutes to release any air bubbles. DO NOT MOVE MOLD WHILE CEMENT IS DRYING.

15. Allow stone to rest undisturbed for 5 hours for smaller stones, overnight for larger stones. When stone has dried, remove from mold, peel off vinyl resist and clean off any smudged cement on glass with wet sponge, scouring pad or scraping tool. Vinyl lines may be removed with sand paper. Allow stone to dry for 24 – 48 hours.

16. If desired, a waterproof cement sealant may be applied, but is not necessary if using Jennifer’s Mosaics™ Outdoor Cement. Apply to cement only and remove any sealant on glass with paper towel.
