PENTECOST SUNDAY— DOMINGO DE PENTECOSTES June 8, 2014

PENTECOST A Solemnity of the universal Church which commemorates the Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles, fifty days after the Resurrection of Christ. The Acts of the Apostles recounts the story of the original Pentecost as well (Acts 2). Jews from all over were gathered in Jerusalem to celebrate the Jewish feast. On that Sunday, ten days after the Ascen-sion of Our Lord, the Apostles and the Blessed Virgin Mary were gathered in the Upper Room, where they had seen Christ after His Resurrection: And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a mighty wind coming, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. And there ap-peared to them parted tongues as it were of fire, and it sat upon every one of them: And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they began to speak with divers tongues, according as the Holy Ghost gave them to speak. [Acts 2:2-4] Christ had promised His Apostles that He would sent His Holy Spirit, and, on Pentecost, they were granted the gifts of the Spirit. The Apostles began to preach the Gospel in all of the languages that the Jews who were gathered there spoke, and about 3,000 people were converted and baptized that day. That is why Pentecost is often called "the birthday of the Church." On this day, with the descent of the Holy Spirit, Christ's mission is completed, and the New Covenant is inaugurated. It's interesting to note that St. Peter, the first pope, was already the leader and spokesman for the Apostles on Pentecost Sunday (see Acts 2:14ff). The Seven Fruits of the Holy Spirit: 1. Wisdom - Wisdom is not the quoting of facts. Wisdom is a gift that allows a person to understand things from God's point of view. In other words, Wisdom allows a person to rec-ognize truth. A person with the Gift of Wisdom is able to take this truth and use it to glorify God by choosing Godly solu-tions to problems. 2. Understanding - The Gift of Understanding allows a person to comprehend the Catholic Faith. For example learning and understanding scripture is a Gift of Understanding. 3. Counsel - The Gift of Counsel is also know as a Gift of Right Judgment. This Gift allows a person to discern between good and evil or right and wrong. The Gift of Counsel makes a person able to act by intuition and choose and be prudent in a supernatural way. 4. Fortitude - The Gift of Fortitude is also known as the Gift of Courage. Through this Gift a person is no longer afraid to stand up for God and His truths. A person who has the Gift of Fortitude will stand up for good against evil and is convict-ed to take a stand when the occasion arises. 5. Knowledge - The Gift of Knowledge allows a person to understand the meaning and purpose God has for him and to live up to this meaning. It differs from wisdom in that it is an action, not just a desire to live up to the ways of God. It dif-fers from Understanding in that it is not just ability, it is a knowing. 6. Piety - Is a desire to serve and worship God out of love, not just duty. A person with the Gift of Piety has a true love and a real relationship with God. 7. Fear of the Lord - The Gift of Fear of the Lord puts God in the proper perspective. A person with this Gift understands the greatness and awesomeness of the Lord. They want to serve Him because of who He is. A person with the Gift of Fear of the Lord understands who they are and why they are here in relationship to God; In other words, everything they are is due to the wonder, love, grace, and perfection of God. They are totally dependent on the Lord as a child is to a parent. The Gift of Fear of the Lord is the beginning of Wisdom. Once a person understands who God is and desires to please Him, they can begin to understand things from God's point of view or have Wisdom.

PENTECOSTES Origen de la fiesta Pentecostés significa 50 días. Cincuenta días después de la Resurrección de Jesús, celebramos la fiesta de Pentecos-tés, es decir de la venida del Espíritu Santo sobre la Virgen María y los Apóstoles. La Promesa del Espíritu Santo Durante la Última Cena, Jesús les promete a sus apóstoles: “Mi Padre os dará otro Abogado, que estará con vosotros para siempre: el espíritu de Verdad” (San Juan 14, 16-17). Más adelante les dice: “Les he dicho estas cosas mientras estoy con ustedes; pero el Abogado, El Espíritu Santo, que el Padre enviará en mi nombre, ése les enseñará todo y trae-rá a la memoria todo lo que yo les he dicho.” (San Juan 14, 25-26). Al terminar la cena, les vuelve a hacer la misma pro-mesa: “Les conviene que yo me vaya, pues al irme vendrá el Abogado,... muchas cosas tengo todavía que decirles, pero no se las diré ahora. Cuando venga Aquél, el Espíritu de Verdad, los guiará hasta la verdad completa,... y les comunicará las cosas que están por venir” (San Juan 16, 7-14). Explicación de la fiesta: Después de la Ascensión de Jesús, se encontraban reunidos los apóstoles con la Madre de Jesús. Era el día de la fiesta de Pentecostés. Tenían miedo de salir a predicar. Repentinamente, se escuchó un fuerte viento y pequeñas lenguas de fuego se posaron sobre cada uno de ellos. Quedaron llenos del Espíritu Santo y empezaron a hablar en lenguas desco-nocidas. En esos días, había muchos extranjeros y visitantes en Jerusalén, que venían de todas partes del mundo a ce-lebrar la fiesta de Pentecostés judía. Cada uno oía hablar a los apóstoles en su propio idioma y entendían a la perfec-ción lo que ellos hablaban. Todos ellos, desde ese día, ya no tuvieron miedo y salieron a predicar a todo el mundo las enseñanzas de Jesús. El Espíritu Santo les dio fuerzas para la gran misión que tenían que cumplir: Llevar la palabra de Jesús a todas las naciones, y bautizar a todos los hombres en el nombre del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo. Es este día cuando comenzó a existir la Iglesia como tal. ¿Quién es el Espíritu Santo? El Espíritu Santo es Dios, es la Tercera Persona de la Santísima Trinidad. La Iglesia nos enseña que el Espíritu Santo es el amor que existe entre el Padre y el Hijo. Este amor es tan grande y tan perfecto que forma una tercera persona. El Espíritu Santo llena nuestras almas en el Bautismo y después, de manera perfecta, en la Confirmación. Con el amor divino de Dios dentro de nosotros, somos capaces de amar a Dios y al prójimo. El Espíritu Santo nos ayuda a cumplir nuestro compromiso de vida con Jesús. Los siete dones del Espíritu Santo: Estos dones son regalos de Dios y sólo con nuestro esfuerzo no podemos ha-cer que crezcan o se desarrollen. Necesitan de la acción directa del Espíritu Santo para poder actuar con ellos. • SABIDURÍA: Nos permite entender, experimentar y saborear las cosas divinas, para poder juzgarlas rectamente. • ENTENDIMIENTO: Por él, nuestra inteligencia se hace apta para entender intuitivamente las verdades reveladas y

las naturales de acuerdo al fin sobrenatural que tienen. Nos ayuda a entender el por qué de las cosas que nos man-da Dios.

• CIENCIA: Hace capaz a nuestra inteligencia de juzgar rectamente las cosas creadas de acuerdo con su fin sobrena-tural. Nos ayuda a pensar bien y a entender con fe las cosas del mundo.

• CONSEJO: Permite que el alma intuya rectamente lo que debe de hacer en una circunstancia determinada. Nos ayu-da a ser buenos consejeros de los demás, guiándolos por el camino del bien.

• FORTALEZA: Fortalece al alma para practicar toda clase de virtudes heroicas con invencible confianza en superar los mayores peligros o dificultades que puedan surgir. Nos ayuda a no caer en las tentaciones que nos ponga el de-monio.

• PIEDAD: Es un regalo que le da Dios al alma para ayudarle a amar a Dios como Padre y a los hombres como herma-nos, ayudándolos y respetándolos.

• TEMOR DE DIOS: Le da al alma la docilidad para apartarse del pecado por temor a disgustar a Dios que es su su-premo bien. Nos ayuda a respetar a Dios, a darle su lugar como la persona más importante y buena del

mundo, a nunca decir nada contra Él.
