Characteristics

• Bright cinnamon bark

• Pale green scale like leaves

• Ruddy, thick furrowed bark

• East an West slopes of Cascades

Ecology

• Individual trees found in mixed conifer forests

• Up to 1000 yrs

• Boughs of trees provide important cover in winter for birds and mammals of forest(See next slide)

In its prime, the whole tree is thatched with boughs so that they shed off rain and snow like a roof, making fine mansions for storm bound birds and mammals alike.
