Statement of Research Interests:

With work on the revision of my doctoral dissertation for publication, I renewed my interests in the study of the social construction of social problems and deviance. In The Religious Roots of American Sociology I traced out how the soteriological goal of late nineteenth century social gospel theologians--to prepare America for Jesus Christ's second coming--helped to shape the early study of criminology, ultimately leading it in biological, psychological, and environmental directions. In my subsequent research I have focused on how some contemporary religious groups--along with one branch of the feminist

Page 44: Cecil Greek's Curriculum Vita - USF Sociologysociology.usf.edu/faculty/data/Greek CV.pdf · 2019-02-05 · Dr. Cecil E. Greek's Curriculum Vita (updated 5 February 2019) Offices:

movement sometimes referred to as cultural feminism--have attempted to have pornography defined as a criminogenic commodity, one that should be eliminated from American society. With an English co-author, William Thompson, I have added a comparative aspect to this research. While both England and America witnessed antipornography campaigns in the 1980s, a more detailed analysis reveals both similarities and differences in the tactics employed and eventual outcomes.

Another major component of my research is his documentary investigation of how societies respond once a phenomenon has been defined as a criminogenic problem which cannot be eliminated through traditional deterrents and punishments. For example, I am interested in the expanding use of forfeiture penalties to control such evils as organized crime, drug trafficking, and pornography distribution. As a result of his historical research, I have shown that the American colonists rejected the English use of forfeitures and escheats and moved toward the use of imprisonment as the major means of controlling crime. Only in 1970 did the use of criminal forfeiture penalties return as organized crime and drug dealing proved unstoppable.

Since the mid-1990s, I have been investigating the role the mass media plays in amplifying--or dismissing--social movements aimed at labeling certain categories of persons or things criminogenic. In addition, I have attempted to change taken-for-granted stereotypes by becoming actively involved in the media myself through granting interviews and making public speeches. In this regard, I have tried to be on the forefront of what Gregg Barak has called "newsmaking criminology." In this way I have been able to uniquely combine my research interests with direct community involvement. Working with William Thompson, we developed a critique of moral panic theory as one of the major models that the media uses to explain certain forms of deviance.

Since 2001, I have been working, sometimes collaboratively with English professor Kay S. Picart, on the development of a new theoretical approach we have called Gothic criminology. By uniquely combining elements of postmodern criminology and Gothic studies, we have come up with a way to analyze the overlapping accounts of the "monstrous" as these appear in crime fiction and film, journalistic coverage of crime and certain stands of academic criminological research. The resulting concepts have been applied to discuss serial killers, suicidal terrorists, stalkers, abusive spouses and "dirty cops." Gothic criminology both provides a way for approaching the topic of contemporary evil, as well as documenting the resulting policy implications of labeling certain categories of offenders as monsters. The current, public witch-hunt mentality regarding sex offenders, for example, is driven by a media perception that such offenders are monstrous combined with a criminological research belief that such offenders routinely fail treatment and rehabilitation. To date this research has resulted in

Page 45: Cecil Greek's Curriculum Vita - USF Sociologysociology.usf.edu/faculty/data/Greek CV.pdf · 2019-02-05 · Dr. Cecil E. Greek's Curriculum Vita (updated 5 February 2019) Offices:

two edited book collections, Monsters In and Among Us: Towards a Gothic Criminology and Framing Law and Crime: An Interdisciplinary Anthology, plus a series of additional articles. In 2016, I published two articles on the history and development of Gothic criminology for criminology encyclopedias, indicating that this theoretical model has now achieved a significant enough standing within criminology to be considered for such inclusion.

Over the past few years my teaching interests have turned to active learning and the use of the Internet for this purpose, plus for completely online distance learning. In addition to using the World Wide Web as an interactive distance education tool, I have been investigating whether this new medium will change the way the public gets its information concerning crime and the criminal justice system. Will the Internet better inform the public or simply become part of the dominant media culture? Only time will tell.

Given the increased anonymity possible through Internet interaction, a number of new or amplified types of deviance and crime have emerged. I have embarked on studies in a number of these areas. These include deviance within online game worlds, the use of the Internet by those involved in self body mutilation as social networking support for such behavior, and fraud and identity theft with in online dating sites. In 2016, I developed and taught a completely online course regarding a number of these topics.

One of the major areas that has been opened up through new media is the development of research methodologies that use alternatives or additions to traditional statistical methods. These include the use of personal photography and the analysis of the resulting data for ethnographic depth description purposes. I've referred to this methodology as "visual criminology." The strength of this approach is in its applicability to everyday life situations in which criminal justice practitioners interact with the public (front stage) or among themselves (back stage). In the summer of 2005, I taught a course in this area for the first time. The students in Prague used photography to document a number of visual components of contemporary society which have criminological significance. These not only include criminal justice personnel interactions with the public, but also street and environmental signage, the exterior and interior architecture of criminal justice buildings, clues that tourists and others give off that they are potential crime victims, spaces which can be documented to be more criminogenic than others, plus existing media depictions that appear in newspapers and magazines.

In 2015 and 2016, I was able to photograph aspects of the relationship between the USF sociology department and the Tampa Heights Junior Civic Association, including the shift in that relationship from volunteerism to one of a more
