WHAT IS A CHANTICLEER?Chanticleer (SHON-ti-cleer) gives Coastal Carolina one of the most unique nick-names in all of sports. Chanticleer comes from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and came to Coastal Carolina when the University was a member of the University of South Carolina system. A Chanticleer is a rooster who rules the barnyard with cunning and wit. His competitiveness never wanes as he battle to the end, using his brains to come out on top every time.

JODY DAVISHEAD COACH15TH SEASONCOASTAL CAROLINA | 1984

Jody Davis enters his 15th season as head coach of the Coastal Carolina University women’s tennis program. With an overall record of 220-84 and a .724 winning percentage, Davis has consistently kept the Lady Chanticleers among the region’s top teams.

He has also made the Chanticleers perennial contenders in the Big South Conference, posting winning records in each of his 14 seasons and a stellar 93-30 (.755) record in league play, including a 28-8 mark over the past six regular seasons. Davis picked up his 200th career victory with in the 2009 regular-season finale win over Radford.

Davis has guided the Chanti-cleers to two Big South cham-pionships and two NCAA Tour-nament appearances. Coastal Carolina reached the 2007 NCAA Tournament and took on ACC foe Clemson in the first round. The Chanticleers fin-ished that season with a 20-6 overall record and were tied for the second-most victories in school history.

Last season, Davis and the Chanticleers finished with a 19-6 overall record and a 5-2 mark inside the Big South Con-ference. It was the most wins since the 2007 Chants finished with a 20-6 record. Both Miki Bunea and Lexi Bolesky were selected to the All-Big South Conference Team under the direction of Davis.

Davis brought the program to new heights in 2001 when Coastal Carolina reached 20 wins for the first in school history. The Chanticleers also swept through the Big South and finished the season with an undefeated 9-0 record in conference. Coastal went on to earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.

In 2005, Davis led the Chanticleers to a school-record 22 wins and has won at least 15 matches in every year since. Davis has also guided Coastal to at least four wins in Big South play in each of his 14 seasons at the helm. In addition, the Chants have finished above .500 in conference every season under Davis.

During Davis’ tenure, the program has seen unprecedented honors and awards earned by individuals. These accolades include six Big South Player of the Year award winners, four Rookie of the Year honors, 34 All-Conference players and three Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards.

Davis has been named Big South Coach of the Year four times. He was also named the 2006 South Carolina Coach of the Year by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) of South Carolina. The USTA Southern Section has a comprehensive awards program that annually recognizes excellence on and off the tennis court.

One of the most impressive accomplishments has been earned in the classroom. The women’s program has been named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Aca-demic Team for the last 12 years. This honor goes to programs with a grade point aver-age of 3.20 or higher. There have also been 56 times that student-athletes have earned ITA Scholar-Athlete honors by having a 3.50 grade point average or above, including five members from the 2009-10 squad. Coach Davis’ emphasis on academics has produced a 100-percent graduation rate during his 14-year tenure.

Davis is a native of Conway, S.C. where he played football and tennis for Conway High School. As a tennis player, he earned a No. 1 doubles ranking in South Carolina along with All-State honors. After high school, he entered Coastal Carolina and played two years for the Chanticleers. Davis went on to receive a master’s degree from The Citadel in 1988. Davis came back to Coastal in 1992, working in the Spadoni College of Educa-tion and the Division of Student Affairs. He took over the tennis program in 1996.

Davis is married to the former Martha Metts, who also graduated from Coastal Carolina and was a four-year starter on the Lady Chanticleers’ volleyball squad. The couple lives in Myrtle Beach with their four daughters Lindsey (22), Abby (21), Katie (17), and Gracie (11).
