PICKLE JUICE

Eze 18:1-4 The word of the Lord came unto me again, saying, WHAT MEAN YE, that ye use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten SOUR GRAPES, and the children's teeth are set on edge? As I live, saith the Lord God, ye shall not have occasion any more to use this PROVERB in Israel. Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

(Jer 31:29-31 is the same reference from a contemporary)

”WHAT MEAN YE” is a question about a topic that warrants our attention. Mainly, because it is the Lord who is asking this question. As always, God never asks a question because he doesn’t know the answer. His intention is to stir the questionee to think about the meaning and the motive for their lack of understanding. I will attempt to shew a correlation to this proverb and Pickle Juice. Briefly,

SOUR is a word referenced five times in the bible. Each time by God. Not surprising since he created all five senses.

Sour is one of the five basic tastes the tongue is

stimulated by, and perceives.

Today we want to focus on the one flavor, SOUR.

OK,we will be looking in particular at the phrase SOUR GRAPE(S). It is found four times in the bible, and always spoken of by God.

The first mention of this phrase is in Isaiah 18. It is an important frame of reference to remember. In the bible, the phrase SOUR GRAPES is a natural occurring taste associated with a time that occurs RIGHT BEFORE HARVEST. MeThinks that it has something to do with resurrection!!! From Isaiah to Ezekiel, this phrase ferments over time and changes into vinegar.

Isa 18:4,5 For so the LORD said unto me,…For afore the harvest, when the bud is perfect,and the SOUR GRAPE is ripening in the flower,

The first mention of Sour Grapes is a reference that indicates a HARVEST IS COMING SOON. Methinks still

“harvest has to do with resurrection”. 1 Cor 15 Christ is said to be the firstfruits of the harvest PTL!

However when the Lord speaks to Ezekiel and Jeremiah about Sour Grapes, the Jewish people in exile are not thinking of resurrection joy. They are confused and wanting to interpret their dire circumstances as being TRAPPED and In-A-PICKLE. But really,

they are avoiding

personal responsibility.

They are blame-gamin.

When someone has a problem they can’t escape, they are said to be “In a Pickle”! It’s a bummer circumstance! Cp.

The common people saw no hope in their circumstances. 605 BC Babylon had put them under a siege-three waves of captivity-Israel was in total bondage-the temple was destroyed-and many people died. God was gone?-bible prophecy was dead?-hope of a harvest resurrection was a fancy? Years have gone by and the only comfort they had was to be comforted with what became a half true proverb: “The fathers have eaten SOUR GRAPES, and the children's teeth are set on edge?” (What mean ye)

Aesop’s Fable tells the story of the fox and the sour grapes…cp. this fable truth to the Christian who is unable to attain the new wine from the gospel tree.

HOPE-FULLY, somewhere in the audience today is a spungefilled heart waiting to squeeze their sin accountability on Christ ANEW, and to receive ANEW the imprint kiss of his love. At the cross, JESUS turned Old Sour Wine into New; with a K-I-S-S
