ShoppingWhile shopping for groceries around a supermarket it is very common close to the entrance and throughout the shop, to hear radio music playing. There is also an occasional call over the microphone which interrupts this. People talking amongst themselves deciding on groceries, and further towards the checkout, beeping and rustling of customers’ groceries going though scanners and into bags. Although there is little taste sense when shopping, people quite often see food and taste it ‘visually’. The smell of a supermarket varies throughout but commonly smells clean, and of fruit, soaps, and meat. Customers would usually be touching the products, and the handlebars of trolleys and baskets.

CleaningWhile cleaning kitchen dishes, the most common sounds are the rattling of objects in water knocking into each other in the sink, and the sound of water splashing while filling up the sink. There again is little taste involvement with cleaning dishes, however to touch, is warm, wet and also rubbery if wearing rubber gloves. If not, it tends to feel quite hot and the scrubbing brush plastic. Drying dishes feel like damp cloth material. The smell is often quite a big part of it, and it smells quite floral and refreshing. The smell of old dishes has usually displaced by this stage!

EatingThe senses of eating mostly revolve around taste – however depending on situations can still largely involve sounds. Most commonly the sounds of people talking, cutlery against plates, your own jaw movements, and occasionally sizzling of the stove. In terms of the major one, taste, is most commonly food but really comes down to the flavors of the meal. People dining together commonly touch cold metallic cutlery and glasses, and fabric of serviettes. There is more importantly a very pleasant smell oriented with eating – it’s very pleasing and comforting.
